We first joined SFDS when my daughter was two years old because we lived in the neighborhood and she wanted to wear a tutu. Fast forward and she is a dedicated dancer with SFDS. Her love of dance and dedication to ballet is due to the dedication, passion and skill of the business owner, Laura and her team. My daughter has landed roles in city-wide dance performances with the education she has had at SFDS. At the end of every year, like most practices, SFDS puts on a performance. This performance is above and beyond anything you wold imagine. I am talking the real deal - the costumes, the props, the whole performance is next level. I also want to add that Ms. Laura (the business owner) is a gem. She is a true teacher in the sense that she is vested in all of the children who attend her program. Recently, SFDS was forced to pivot their approach from in-person sessions to telepractice (due to COVID-19). Almost immediately, classes continued online - they have been excellent and during this crazy time its been something stable in my daughter's life. Thank you SFDS for providing a caring, challenging and fun space for the dancers!

The teacher's here, especially Ms. Laura, have pushed her and nurtured her all along the way. The yearly recitals are so well organized and carried out and as a parent I am impressed year after year. The lessons learned here will carry her into a future as a strong, confident, funny person. Watching all this transitioned to online classes during SIP has been amazing. I cannot recommend this studio enough.

The entire place is falling apart, filthy, and woefully non-ADA Compliant! The equipment is…read moremalfunctioning regularly. The entire "wet area" is constantly malfunctioning. There are heater issues in the pool and jacuzzi so often the members joke that "they must have paid the energy bill" the few times they are functioning adequately. The city has shut down the pool for repairs and health violations many times in my less than a year there. Managers do absolutely nothing but mislead and evade, refuse to return an important email (incidentally it took 6 months to finally get Francisco's email - he refused to speak with me or give me his email on 3 occasions), he has also failed to return a few phone calls and 4 in-person requests to front desk staff asking for his help address the more serious issues during the 7 months I have been a member. The women's locker room is not ADA compliant, and the disabled restroom stall is not labeled as such and used as a leisurely changing room often. The stall is always disgustingly dirty, even on the so called cleaning day. This disabled stall often has no toilet covers or toilet paper - especially on weekends, trash and soiled toilet paper strewn all over the floor, a dangerous loose toilet seat they refuse to fix or tighten, and feces and spitballs on the walls since August 2025. The disabled restroom in the common area is always locked and unusable. I am directed there when I have brought the ongoing issues to their attention. There is no lifeguard in the wet area. A swim school takes up the most common hours for pool usage, members are not allowed during this time. An extreme lack of gym and pool etiquette exists beyond anything I have ever seen as a former swimmer, now water walker, and gym member for 40+ years. There are few rules for the wet area, none of which are followed, which along with the safety issues and broken equipment and loose railings create a dangerous, germ filled, and unhealthy environment. The jacuzzi outtake has brown sludge growing in. The tiles in the jacuzzi and pool are covered in filth and slime from people coming out of the saunas to "cool off" without rinsing their sweat off in the shower first. The floating partition dividing the two lanes is similar, and also has black sludge and mold on it. The shower in the wet area was broken for weeks as well. There is literal mold dripping down the ceiling and walls in there they claimed to take care of last September. They seemingly simply wiped the walls and painted over it, as it is growing back at an alarming rate. The pipes are all rusty and some drip onto people in the pool. The city issued them a citation for repair in late August or early September, they still have not done a few of the required repairs. There are a lot of kind caring people that work there, especially Saldi, a former manager, and Jay, the hardworking maintenance person always fixing the broken things management refuses to replace and keeping things running as best as he can. And, there are some great friendly members that make the place more bearable as well. Yet rather than fix their failing infrastructure and equipment, or address member concerns, they get a fancy new bright lightening system that shows how old and filthy everything is, refuse to uphold ADA laws - especially in regard to the disabled lift and the one unusable disabled shower stall, or fix the heating system in the pool that has been malfunctioning on a regular basis since August 2025. Now there is a sign stating they will be getting massage chairs and other useless for most amenities members would have the displeasure of paying $12 a month more for rather than deal with serious health and ADA violations, and aging malfunctioning equipment and facilities. This is the only gym available to me in my neighborhood, most of the disabled people have left because of these issues. I do not have that luxury.

I've never seen anyone wiping down a machine. When asked about the uncleanliness of the machines, staff at the front desk act like they've never heard before that this is a problem. You've got to be kidding me. My question to management is: With all of these negative reviews essentially commenting on the uncleanliness of the gym, why aren't you doing anything to fix it?

If you've got a rock-star child who is a reluctant writer, and isn't always well-behaved, well, think twice before signing up your kid. One-star in that a case, and hence the over-all three-star review. My son, then just finishing second-grade didn't want to go to the camp. But I pulled the somewhat tiger-mom move, and forced him to go because good writing skills are important (and I have this arguably misguided notion that good writing skills are essential to being a successful human being). The writing stuff was great, and his finished story was adorable. But he had some conflicts with another boy, and the staff just didn't know how to deal with it. Not their fault. They're trained to help kids with their writing skills, not their social skills, and not to manage conflict in a healthy way. Well, partially not their fault. Letting one kid play with an i-Pad at times and not others was problematic, and led to numerous problems. A couple years later, my kid still complains about this camp. He is a better writer, though I'm not sure that was related to his two fairly miserable weeks there.

It's all super fun and inventive except for that last one which is terrifying and gives me nightmares. Putting all of that interest in writing to use is challenging over the summer, when things slow down and routines change out of an academic focus and more into a "panic because I have to get a hair cut and a manicure and I have my kid with me all summer long." Adventures in Writing camp will allow you to get your hair did, your eyebrows waxed, and your frito lays nails done, all without a first grader pulling on your skirt. BONUS: They learn how to write, and have fun while doing it. Before the summer session begins, they call and check in, which is terrific for those of us who have tons of questions and want to know every detail of what their little angel will be doing in the two weeks they will spend with the writing counselors. Although honestly, my questions are more geared toward, "Do they have to be fully dressed when we arrive in the morning?" and, "Do I need to be fully dressed when we arrive in the morning?" AIW is one of those camps kids love, despite the academic focus. It will push them towards better writing habits, stronger writing skills, and more creative thinking when producing written work. All that, and you get two weeks of grown up time. Score!
