Pete's is under new ownership since the last time we were here and it hasn't changed at all! Still great sandwiches and service. We only had takeout dessert on a chilly December night, so I can't speak to the quality of the other food. The desserts we ordered were up front in a refrigerator case. In the time of COVID-19 both workers at the counter had masks on, which was good. There were a number of dessert items including carrot cake and cheesecake. We opted for an eclair and a slice of baklava. The eclair was the standout. It was generously filled with custard and frosted with chocolate ganache. It was not too sweet and there was cream in every bite. The baklava was a pretty small slice and the phyllo was not as flaky as you might want. I think because it was tightly wrapped in a cling wrap it was pretty compressed. Each item were $3 and although I'd maybe spend that again for the eclair, I probably wouldn't for the baklava. I would like to return and try the pizza. read more

Pete's Kitchen has been a reliable sandwich shop for years. Three of my friends and I stopped in for old time sake. We were all slightly disappointed. The sandwiches were priced more just to have tomato and lettuce added. The potato salad was blah tasting and the potatoes were slightly crunchy, but the eclairs were great. Subway is a better deal. My wife and I stopped in based on previous reviews, and I can fully say we were not disappointed. Met by a heavy the open door and wonderful people inside my wife and I both enjoyed the lamb beef Gyro, homemade potato salad, and homemade eclair. For the price the food portion was amazing, the potato salad had a wonderful mix of mayonnaise and mustard, and the eclair was out of this world. If there was ever an Iowa version of triple D, Pete's Kitchen would definitely be on the show!! read more

I love this place. Its a little hole in the wall cafe.... in a odd section of the town. Nothing fancy here. Simple and clean. They have the best gyros and eclairs in town. Only $6.00 for a hot and fresh gyro stuffed with lettuce, tomatoe, onion, provolone cheese and tzatziki sauce. They will put feta cheese on your gyro instead of provolone cheese if ya ask for it. The owners are super friendly. They've been in business a Looooooong time. They know what it's all about when it comes to good food. They also make thier own pizzas, baklava, carrot cake and cheese cake. A must try when visiting MC. read more

Pete's Kitchen is a hidden treasure of Mason City. Reasonable prices ($6-8 per sandwich) and great tasting sandwiches. My favorite is the toasted tuna sandwich, mayo instead of oil. The portion size is huge and is nearly guaranteed to be two meals in and of itself. I've also tried the toasted turkey and have enjoyed it as well. Their gyros are out of this world and I cannot recommend them enough if you're a gyro fan. Their pizza is a thick chewy crust, with awesome toppings, huge portions here too. They are known by many for their homemade desserts of cheesecake, carrot cake, and baklava, can't go wrong in this department. The lunch hour does get quite busy so I always call my order in ahead of time for pickup, usually the wait is about 15-20 minutes from when I call it in. There are a few tables but it's more of a pick up and go place in my opinion. They accept debit and credit cards but off a discount for cash. read more

Oh man. This place. What a hidden gem of a dive. I had to wait 10 minutes for the train to pass before I could park for supper. And right next door is some kind of dive bar, which I stayed out of. Inside are just three tables to sit at, so you might just want to get that sammich to go. I ordered the chicken gyro with a smidge of Italian and cucumber sauces, and substituted feta for the provolone cheese. All great choices. This was a great gyro sandwich. read more

We're always on the lookout for a good lunch spot and they do some great things here! We were tipped off by a buddy to try this place out and boy was it good! The place looks and feels like it's been here for a LONG time - as it has! The owner, Pete has been here 30+ years and does things right! They make their beat every day and -spoiler alert - it is some of the best bread we've ever had. We got a ham combo - the combo here means lettuce, tomatoes, etc. On that beast, sub some provolone for American cheese, toast it and voila, one of the better sandwiches I've had in the past decade. It was amazing how such an unassuming meatwich was so good, but it was! We also shared a gyro and it was good, not great. They did throw some provolone on it which I appreciated! The other thing they do great here is desserts and that git them the 5 star bump. We grabbed an eclair which our 2 year old almost single handedly devoured. The Bavarian cream in the middle was amazing. Finally, the carrot cake was the best I've ever had and this from someone who feels strongly the vegetables and dessert should remain separate! Being inclusive is fune, but only when done well! Flavorful, hearty but not overly heavy and with some frosting I would swim in if it was acceptable. Great ma and pa shop that will make you believe in the power of a good sandwich again! A must for anyone in the area. read more

Love this Mason City gem. I go here fairly often for lunch or to grab a sandwich and take it to one of the local breweries. The pizza is unique and filling with it's thick crust. The sandwiches are also large with break baked on site. Insider tip, you can order a half sandwich but I recommend getting a whole on a splitting it. read more

What a hidden gem! Pete was so proud to tell us about his freshly made bread, sandwiches and deserts. I recommend a whole, hot pastrami with everything! Okay if you're in the vicinity of Pete's Kitchen it is worth stopping. Really unique pizza...the crust is homemade with big thick edges that defy description. The Pepperoni slices are super thick, not your everyday slices. They are tangy and go great with the zesty sauce...This is not a normal pizza place, even the shape is odd...big square pieces. But if you call ahead and order a slice of pepperoni--one slice is a whole meal--you will be happy. Truly a homemade pizza, one of the gems of this town. read more
