I have been going to this dojo for a about six months now…read more Sensei Bob Otto is a very kind and honorable man who puts his students first. I have seen the way he works with the younger students and to help them grow as individuals. They are not only learning karate, but also life skills. How to deal with bullies, how to stand up for themselves, and how to communicate effectively. Bob and his staff really take time with the kids to work with them and help them become the best they can be. I have also seen Sensei Bob Otto and his staff help older adults ease into Karate and the exercises and take their time with them to make sure that they're doing the katas and movements correctly, but also make adjustments if a certain movement is not working for the individual (such as causing pain or discomfort due to not being flexible enough yet - or previous injury). I personally appreciate it when Sensei Otto and staff take the time to show me the proper way to do the katas, strikes, and blocks. I also enjoy the style of karate taught here. Uechi-Ryu Karate-Do. It is a traditional Okinawan karate that is closely related to Southern Shaolin Tiger and Crane Kung Fu. The art has retained a lot of the flowing circular motions seen in Kung Fu. This karate style also shares a similar lineage to Goju-Ryu. This is a very effective karate for learning self defense. In the style there is an inherent focus on conditioning the body for balance and to be able to take hits (if one has to). The blocks learned in this style are also incredibly practical and powerful. They are circular movements and operate kind of like a parry. It takes a bit to learn to do effectively but I can't argue with the practical applications. Sensei Bob Otto also brings other things into the mix to keep things interesting. Sensei Otto is a certified Krav Maga instructor and has some experience in Brazillian Jiu Jitsu. He is also a fan of boxing / kick-boxing and will often include drills and techniques from Krav Maga, BJJ, and Boxing/Kickboxing to switch things up, keep things interesting, and as he says "To add more tools to your toolbox". Everyone has been very kind and supportive and has offered me help when I have struggled. This dojo has a very nice family-like atmosphere. I always look forward to classes and always enjoy myself. If you're interested in the martial arts, this is definitely a great place to check out!

My oldest has been enjoying coming to class and being around kids his own age. He told me today that watching sparing is one of his favorite things so far. My only critique would be to see a bit more split for the smaller kids to the big kids early on. With the ability to catch on faster, the older kids (pre teens and up) would benefit from being split into a group by themselves so that they can be taught and move a bit faster. On occasion, the younger kids both have trouble following through with their skills, and it causes class to move slower for the older students. I look forward to seeing my almost teenager continue to grow and progress with this program.

Be prepared to sweat and train hard. Within the few months that I have been here, I have gotten into better shape and have learned a lot. You will learn Shotokan katas (forms), practice in kumite (sparring), as well as physical strength training. There are no contracts here and no upgrades to get into higher level classes like some other places in the area charge. As an adult, I can only speak of my experience in the evening adult class, which includes some younger students as well. All students are taught the same material regardless of belt rank, with the exception of higher level katas which are taught to higher ranking belts, although lower level belts can watch and learn. If I had to be super critical, my one tiny criticism is that this dojo is a bit smaller in size compared to others, but that hasn't been a problem in training.

It is a mixed age class - so if your child is coming in as a young or first time student with no experience, or if you have a repeat student who is building on skills learned, the instructors are always supportive and helps each child work on their skill. The Pre Karate class is month to month, reasonably priced, and no contracts which was very important to us. It is the number one reason why we picked Oviedo Karate Club (Many parents don't realize that they have a no-contract option, which is really all that the other martial arts centers offer. I've heard many complaints regarding contracts if you fail to commit, have a schedule conflict, etc. It was a nightmare we were so happy to learn that we did not have to experience! Not to mention what the other studios charge monthly - it's unreachable for many who want to experience karate but probably are unwilling to spend that much if you don't know your child likes karate. That's why we tried it and we stayed!) I think parents would be surprised to see that a karate class can be child-centered and positive. She focuses on calming the body to focus, listening, practice, learning about Japanese traditions & terminology and the lessons never discuss "fighting another person" or "competition" or "violence." Our class does not require a belt ranking. I am glad we found the Oviedo Karate Club. It's currently at Riverside Park in Oviedo which is convenient us. We love coming here for the exercise and skill.

Here is what my husband has to say... I write this review from the position of a serious martial artist. I have 20 years of martial arts experience. It is something I am deeply passionate about. It took me 8 years to reach my black belt in taekwondo; I taught for 10 years and reached my third degree; I competed actively in kickboxing for 6 years; I did aikido for 5 years during which time I was one of my sensei's (who was one of the first to bring aikido to the east coast of FL) first uchideshi, or live in student. I lived and breathed martial arts for most of my life. I found Stoneybrook Karate after my son expressed interest in learning martial arts. I thought I was going to have a terrible time looking for a school that that wasn't a "McDojo" or daycare in the guise of a karate school, let alone meet my high standards. I was pleasantly surprised to find a school that has: ***a head instructor who attained his yudansha (black belt) in Okinawa--the birthplace of traditional karate ***several kids that are nationally and internationally ranked competitors that help with the kids classes ***a competition team that is serious about competing in legitimate tournaments ***a strict, disciplined teaching approach that delivers results Sensei Tim is a no-nonsense instructor who teaches karate in a way it was taught to him in Okinawa. There is no BSing around. The kids work hard and they enjoy what they are doing because they are actually getting very good at it by learning at this school. These are all huge pluses for me, as a martial artist and as a parent. If you are interested in serious, traditional karate for yourself or your child, you would do yourself a great favor by visiting this school!
