Dr. Joe (Little Crown Pediatrics Dentist). As a long, loyal patron of your dentistry, unfortunately, I must let you go as my son's dentist. I understand customers are a dime a dozen, they come and go. I can say that with dentistries as well. As a person with dental insurance, it is easy to shop around for another dentist for my son. I was a loyal customer for the last 12 years since my son was first able to get dental work done. He is now almost 16. It's probably not a big deal losing 1 customers. I had a bad experience today when I called in to see if I could change my son's appointment. I live in LA, I work in Long Beach, my son goes to school in LA, and we travel to South Pasadena for his cleanings and dental work with Dr. Joe. I always try and get the last appointment for the day for my son as I don't want him to miss school, I also need to take 1-2 hours off early to travel from Long Beach to LA to pick up my son from school and then to South Pasadena to make the afternoon's appointment. I called in today to see if I could do a last minute change from Thursday (4/25/2024 - see the picture of the card I received 6 months ago) to tomorrow, Wednesday, 4/24/2024 because LAUSD had a day off, I also took the day off for another reason so both my son and I would be free if there was an availability tomorrow. Come to find out, the lady who picked up the phone today said that I did not have an appointment in the books for 4/25/2024 and that she could not find an appointment. I mentioned a few times to her I have this card in my appointment book for 4/25/2024 at 430pm and inquired on why there was no appointment. After a bit of back and forth, she said that everyone that was scheduled for 4/25/2024 was contacted and notified that the doctor would not be in. I asked her again, who was the person to notify me because I did not get any notifications (luckily I called today to inquire about a date change or else I would have showed up Thursday for an appointment I did not have). She then said that Dr. Joe would not be in Thursday and that I could book another appointment with her and that everyone was notified (apparently not everyone). I left it at that and hung up (she did sound irritated) but I left it at that. After hanging up the phone, I called my primary dentistry and was able to book my son for a Saturday appointment and insurance information would be completed when I came in. I called Dr. Joe's line back and advised the same lady on the phone that I was not too happy with the cancellation, and she stated that I could just rebook with her for another date, I never received an apology from her for the no notification of the cancellation for 4/25/24. I mentioned to her that I did not need to rebook anymore and that I would be taking my son elsewhere moving forward. I was loyal for many years, but unfortunately, I have to take my money somewhere else. I felt like she was irritated and condescending towards the end of the conversation before we hung up. I changed my dental insurance and pay more just so my kids could grow up with this great office. The staff is great, super friendly, and the dentists are so nice! Dental hygienists wear cute scrubs, like Olaf and are so good with the kids. So good. Did I mention so good??? I swear they find the sweetest women and men and they probably have to pay super sweet niceness test to work there. Dr. Joe and Dr. Choi both explain and listen to the parent and the patient very well. They are attentive and very sweet. Dr. Joe is a great dentist! I was so excited to find a pediatric dentist in South Pas because the one in Pasadena that everyone recommends doesn't take insurance. Boo! It didn't matter because finding Dr. Joe was a great surprise. My 3 year old went for his first dental experience and Dr. Joe made him feel quite at ease. He explained everything in a very caring and calm manner and set my little one at ease with his chairside manner. The office is very nice and new-clean and all equipment was in excellent tip top shape. He has TVs to watch (although they can be distracting to a 3 year old!) and he takes a good amount of time explaining the equipment and showing the child (and parent) how he will use them. My son has had some rough dental problems and they've always handled it with care and reassured him that he's in good hands. The office is super cute and fun for the little ones too. Dr. Joe and his team are fantastic. My son has been a patient for a few years now and he looks forward to getting his progress report at the end of the visit. There is a parking lot in the back or street parking in front and on the side streets. Scheduling is easy and at the end of each visit, patients can pick two toys to their liking. However, I must comment on the condition of the restroom based on our most recent visit. We were the first patients of the day and it appeared that the bathrooms had not been cleaned the night before or that morning. The trash can was full with used paper towels and a dirty diaper and the box toilet seat covers was blocked by the changing table and empty. The soap dispenser nozzle was also broken. There is also no separate trash bin for diapers. I would hope that a medical office would take the utmost care in having clean bathrooms and will address these issues. read more

After 6yrs the level of service has gone down as well as appt availability. If a routine cleaning is near to impossible to schedule then I could only imagine the frustration of trying to get in for an urgent visit! Pricing is pretty vague and there are some surprise charges at the end of the visit that could blind side you. It's unfortunate because we don't live near the area but we come all the way here because of the past level of service and now with that going downhill, we need to look elsewhere. We have been going to Dr Joe for many years, and he is outstanding. However, the level of customer service is severely declining and as of today, there is an 8 month wait for routine cleaning. I would have hoped that they stop taking new customers and prioritize giving excellent service to the ones they have! My wife scheduled a dental cleaning for my son. They took our insurance and appointment. My son got his teeth checked, and after the service, they tell us we are out of network and its not covered. First, its a UHC PPO, which is one of the largest health networks? Second, they did not tell my wife that they were not part of the network, one thing they would have known and should have disclosed upon taking the insurance card. Paid the bill, but not coming back. Caveat emptor, especially if you have United PPO dental care insurance. In contrast to my dentist (not Joe), they verified every service with my insurance before scheduling me. That is a much better way to keep repeat customers. read more

We'd heard great things about Dr Joe so thought his practice would be the best place to take our daughter for her first dental check up. He was pretty good with her when she visited his office on Fair Oaks - they're set up with tons of distractions and treats to gain cooperation from young kids. We'd feel a lot better about the place if they had been more up front about their pricing. When we called to ask how much it would be for a visit as a cash patient, we were told $71. In the end, with some additional "free" fluoride treatment, the bill was $150. When we later queried this we were told the fluoride treatment was "free", because it's included in all first visits which always cost $150. It's not a massive amount of money, but if they can't be transparent about pricing from the get-go, we'd recommend finding another practice to entrust with your child's dental care. After all, there will eventually be visits where misquoted pricing probably will be a big deal! read more

We originally went to another dentist for our 2 year old's first check-up. Turned out she had cavities between her 2 front teeth. The dentist said that they'd have to take 4 x-rays and then get an anesthesiologist before doing the fillings. The cost of the anesthesiologist was outrageous and was not covered by insurance ($960!) not including his charges for the dental work. So we asked our friends and we were recommended to Dr. Joe. We made an appointment for a second opinion with Dr. Joe who was very nice and pleasant. He checked our daughter's teeth while she sat on my lap and she seemed fine with everything. He said he could do the work without using an anesthesiologist and really wouldn't recommend it unless it was necessary. He also only needed to take 1 x-ray (we were uncomfortable with so many x-rays for such a small child). We set up an appointment which was scheduled to take an hour and a half. We brought in a dvd for her to watch during the work and Dr. Joe talked us through every step of the procedure. No need for a shot either, just a topical anesthesia, and to think the other dentist was going to put her under! Turns out, our daughter did great and the procedure only ended up taking 20 minutes! She didn't even cry (and we were so worried she'd meltdown!). She also acted like nothing happened afterwards! We were so happy with Dr. Joe, the procedure, the results, and the savings! Highly recommended!! This is going to be our children's dentist from now own. By the way, they are only open Tues-Fri if that's a problem for you. read more

We have nothing but wonderful things to say about Dr. Joe and his staff. My daughter is 2 years old and had her first dental visit with Dr. Joe in July of 2010. From start to finish, the visit was probably one of the best doctor visits I've ever experienced. Dr. Joe was very flexible with his schedule and allowed us to come in during my lunch break (and ultimately his) so that I could accompany my daughter (and her grandparents) to the visit. They had all sorts of toys in the waiting room and Dr. Joe's assistant (sorry I can't remember her name!) sat with my daughter for a few minutes to play with her and allow her to get to know them. Then they escorted all of us into the actual room where they see patients. It was very bright and cheery, clean and had more toys for her to play with. She grabbed an etch a sketch to take with her to the dental chair. Dr. Joe let me sit next to my daughter the whole time. He pulled out each tool he was going to use on her and explained what it did, then used it on her hand so she knew what it was going to feel like. Then he started the procedure. He had her help him count her teeth, then cleaned them, brushed them, and put some fluoride paste on them, all the while explaining what he was doing so she wouldn't be surprised. My daughter loved "Mr. Thirsty" - or the little vacuum they use in your mouth. She thought that was funny! All in all, the visit couldn't have gone more smoothly. She loved Dr. Joe and actually told us she wants to go back again! Hopefully all of her dental visits go so well... ;) Thank you Dr. Joe!! read more

As you can see Dr. Joe comes highly recommended. Every single reviewer gave him 5 stars. I had to see for myself why. My daughter had a traumatic experience from our previous dentist. She needed two of her teeth extracted. She was afraid of the nitrous gas mask. She was so afraid that the sleeping gas didn't work. Fortunately, I was able to find Dr. Joe. The waiting room is so welcoming to young clients, with upbeat wall color, puzzles and toys. The dentist office has a very calm and friendly feel. Dr. Joe was the one that greeted and welcomed us. Dr. Joe came highly recommended to us from a bunch of parents and seeing the glowing reviews here on Yelp, we decided he'd be the lucky dentist that would have to deal with our likely-uncooperative daughter on her very first trip to the dentist. The recommendations and reviews did NOT lead us astray. Dr. Joe and his staff are absolutely awesome. Super clean office and great staff. Arrived to a cute little office that had a small-ish waiting area with some toys. Once we were called, 20 minutes later than our appointment time (for which they profusely apologized), we were escorted to the back room. The first thing the kids get to do is pick out a new toothbrush for themselves to take home with them later. The room is a big room that consists of 3 dental chairs and another waiting area with TONS of toys. My daughter was asked if she wanted to wear 'goggles' and she got to pick out a pair of sunglasses she wanted to wear during her visit. They then brought her to a set of drawers and told her she could pick out what toothpaste flavor she wanted. They helped her up on a little step stool and carefully listed all the flavors they had. We ended up with the strawberry one. [Side note: My daughter JUST turned 2 so she doesn't necessarily understand every word you're saying..but not once did they speak "down" to her or speak to me. They spoke to her in a very calm, loving voice.. without all the baby talk. Love that.] She was then led to one of the dental chairs where they proceeded to show her all the 'cool tools' they were going to use. They really take the time to show the kids what each instrument is so that the kids aren't scared. They don't rush it. Love it. The dental assistant started to try and clean her teeth. My daughter is a pretty cautious child and she usually won't do things for strangers, but slowly, with a lot of patience and calm coaxing from the assistant, my daughter surprisingly obliged every time she was asked to open her mouth. Once she was done with the cleaning, we got to wait in the waiting area (the 2nd waiting area with the TONS of toys) inside the dental room and she played with some toys for about 10 minutes while Dr. Joe was finishing up with another patient. Once it was my daughter's turn, we talked her back to a dental chair. My daughter seemed pretty nervous of Dr. Joe, and he sensed it right away. So instead of just 'going for it', he also took the time to show her all the tools, they both 'examined' the dinosaur's teeth (the dinosaur she had brought with her from the play area to the chair) with the little mirror, etc. She then relaxed a bit and then he was able to do his exam. Dr. Joe was not only super knowledgeable (yay.. super important!), but he was SO great with our daughter (crazy important!). He takes his time, doesn't rush through any patients, and he and his staff try to make the child feel as comfortable as possible while there. Teethtastic! Dr. Joe and his office was phenomenal! We drove out of the way to go to him for a second opinion after another dentist recommended my daughter for a baby root canal...yikes! Dr. Joe explained that he did not think she needed one and the following week scheduled her immediately, on his day off even! The office was so family friendly, my hubby and I got to sit in the room to watch her get her cavities filled while also keeping an eye on my son in the play area. Dr. Joe and his staff were so attentive, friendly and exceptional! They provide payment plans and take care of your needs. The best part of it was my daughter loved it!? How is that? Got recommended to see Dr. Joe and even though it's over an hour drive from my home, it was well worth it. We have been going to Dr Joe for a few years now. He is very patient and friendly with my girls. When they are scared he listens to their concerns and figures out how to make them feel comfortable and happy. Dr Joe and his staff explains what they are doing while cleaning and checking their teeth. By the end of the visit my girls are asking to come back. The office is very well organized and has plenty of toys for the kids to play with. The staff is very friendly and easy to speak with. Dr. Joe is, literally, Superman. He swooped in while we were drowning in the middle of nowhere. We were on a Memorial Day weekend vacation when our daughter developed an infection from an improperly filled cavity. Basically, the tooth decayed to the point that it gave her a serious infection (cellulitis). Poor thing is 5 years old! Woke up on a Sunday, with a swollen face. Yes, that's right. SUNDAY. Memorial Day weekend, 9 am. Dreading the long wait at the useless ER, I went to Yelp and found Dr. Joe. 63 5-star reviews?!?! Worth a call. I left a message at 9:30am. He literally called me back at 9:50 am. As in, he called me back sooner than my own brother (the doctor in the family). And we're not even his current patient!!! We were just desperate parents with a child in major pain. He gave some reassuring advice after I sent him 2 text photos of my daughter's condition. He scheduled us for 9 am the next day (Memorial Day)! We rushed home from vacation and saw him the next morning. Our daughter's face was so swollen that he recommended that we go to the ER. But I had so much faith in him, I begged him to see her, and he did. He is gentle and caring, knowledgeable and patient. He really took his time with our daughter, and despite the fact we were literally walk-ins on Memorial Day, we were his number 1 priority and our daughter had her tooth removed that morning. instantly, her swelling went down. After the decay was out, and the pus/blood drained, she instantly felt better. But that's not all. After this process, we went home and she continued to swell. Dr. Joe continued to monitor her progress via text message, and he strongly recommended us to take her to the ER. He kept repeating that she isn't out of the woods. Even though I friggin' hate the ER and refuse to go, I listened to Dr. Joe and went to URGENT CARE. Everything checked out fine, and the doctor even said her dental area looked very clean. (Good job, Dr. Joe!) Dr. Joe is a Godsend to all parents!!! Even to an over-critical, perfectionist, type-A, tiger-mom, like me, he is even more cautious and thorough, and I am so glad I found him. Our daughter is getting infinitely better day by day. We have a follow-up appointment with him on Friday. Medical practitioners need to take heed. Dr. Joe IS the standard that you need to seek to achieve. Parents, do not go ANYWHERE else for your kids' dental needs. I am serious. One bad decision about a dentist led to cellulitis!!! This is the greatest pediatric dentist of all time, I am convinced! My 17 month old daughter had a tough fall over the weekend, and busted her gum and loosened one of her teeth. The nice receptionist scheduled an early morning appointment for her, and answered all of my questions so patiently and politely. Dr. Joe examined Susannah, and was so gentle, calm and informative. He is so knowledgeable and really relates to the parent and the child, and explains things very clearly. Following this appointment, I asked how much money I owed, and I expected it to be pretty pricy, because it wasn't a routine thing, and they said there was NO charge! "Accidents happen," they said, and "we are here to help!" I couldn't believe it. A few months ago, When my baby was one and my other daughter was 3, they were able to go in to the same appointment slot, which was very convenient. The two female assistants were AMAZING with my girls! They actually didn't want to leave. Let me begin by saying that this review is about their business practice, not about Dr. Joe competency. My daughter went for her 2-year-old check up. I was told that the comprehensive oral evaluation would be in the $70 range. And I was caught by surprise when the bill came out to be $160! Apparently the prophylaxis (tooth brushing) and the topical application of fluoride were not included in the comprehensive exam. The staff did not inform me of the extra charges associated with these procedures, nor did they ask me if I would like to opt out of these additional services. The tooth brushing took less than 2 minutes, and the exam (plus the application of fluoride) was less than 5 minutes. $90 for these additional procedures was a steep price. Since it was a simple, straightforward dental exam, I could not comment on Dr. Joe's technical competency. Dr. Joe and his staff were friendly and courteous. I just wish they had been more transparent and upfront about their services and fees. read more

First and foremost, anyone that lives a life with a child with special needs (specifically severe autism) you are fully aware of how difficult it is to find a dentist that is 1) willing to even allow our children into their offices 2) willing to deal with our loud and vocal kids 3) willing to deal with the risks of our children suddenly becoming upset or angry.... Dr. Joe made us feel so comfortable as did the staff. Everyone was so kind and patient with our son. The entire office is immaculate, the kids coming in and out of their appointments are so happy. There are toys for children of all ages, their flat screen always has a terrific Disney movie rolling. Now to the best part, Dr. Joe is simply amazing!!!! He is patient, smart, knowledgeable, kind, flexible, gentle and extremely unconditional. He made my son feel very safe and comfortable. He spoke to my son in a manner that empowered him to relax and trust in his service. My son is 22 years old and has severe autism and is also legally blind, therefore, going to the doctor or dentist, it's a very scary experience for him. Dr. Joe gave our son a sense of "you're ok." Dr. Joe understands children and/or adults with special needs. Although my son is much older but looks and acts much younger, Dr. Joe never allowed that to be an issue. We showed up to our son's appointment thinking this was strictly a "check up" and that sedation would be required to perform a thorough cleaning. No, that was not the case. Dr. Joe was graciously kind enough to perform his check up and a minor cleaning w/out the trauma of sedation. All of the girls at the front desk were very nice and the dental assistants were wonderful as well. I would give Dr. Joe's office a 10 Star review if I could. Dr. Joe and staff were amazing! I came here for my 3 year old's first visit and I'm so glad I picked this place. First the place is decorated in a very kid friendly way. Lots of toys and stuffed animals. The staff were amazing with my daughter who was clearly scared. I choose not to use fluoride and they were very accommodating. I was able to choose a non-fluoride paste for the cleaning and skipped the fluoride treatment. In both instances they were very friendly about it, no judgy looks or comments. Once the procedure began my daughter, who was seated in my lap, flipped the f*** out. It was so hard to watch. But the technician was fast and kept a calm soothing tone. The whole time she reassured my daughter it would be okay. I wasn't prepared for her begging and screaming at me to take her home and I actually started to cry (tears streaming) while I held her down (bear hug) for the cleaning. Honestly it was a little embarrassing and even caught me by surprise but the tech and doctor started handing me tissues and reassured me I wasn't the first mom to shed some tears. They even asked if I wanted to take a break. I couldn't believe how well they handled the mess that my daughter and I turned out to be. After it was all over my daughter went over to play with the toys. She completely forgot about the cleaning and refused to leave! The staff let us stay right through their lunch hour and chatted with me about the whole ordeal. Once patients started coming in again they let her watch (from the toy area adjacent the procedure chairs) and even explained in a very kid friendly way what was happening. In March of this year, I no longer felt confidence in the dentist and dental office my wife was burdened with to attend to the growing dental needs of my young son. My next step was to find a dental office that would have a dentist with the best possible bedside manor and well thought out plan to deal with my son's pressing dental needs I immediately went online and after just a few searches found Dr Joe's website and right away knew that this was the place! Once my wife and I stepped into the waiting room to speak to the administrative staff, we knew we were in the right place! Then, Dr. Alice Kim sealed the deal by providing my wife and I with an extraordinary plan & commitment for correcting the issues with my son's teeth in both the short and long run. We were instantly reassured! Fast forward a month after our son's procedure, and we are just so grateful and impressed with the magical work performs by Dr. Alice Kim that I had to go on Yelp to let others know that the good folks here are truly outstanding at what they do! Being a pediatric dentist has to be one of the hardest jobs ever, and Dr Joe does it with skill and a smile. Absolutely one of the best dentists and nicest people I've ever met. He and his staff have been so wonderful with my kids - neither of which are easy patients. My 7 year old has special needs and sensory issues, which makes having his teeth prodded and x-rayed extra difficult. They are so patient and accommodate him so nicely. My 5 year old has had 5 cavities (eek!) and for each Dr Joe was able to fill them quickly, without Novocaine, and without her freaking out. He's creative and fun and she walks out with a smile. The office itself is filled with toys that keep siblings busy while they wait their turn. The hygienists and office staff are wonderful. I just can't say enough good things about these guys. I wish they did adult teeth!! read more

We are so glad to have found Dr Joe's practice. We have 2 children - one neurotypical child and one which who has high functioning autism and sensory integration. Both children LOVE this practice. Dr Joe was able to put my 7yr old child with autism at ease during her exam and was able to xray her for the first time ever! We were amazed. Those xrays showed multiple cavities and we had to make the hard decision to sedate her to address all of her dental issues. Dr Joe was so caring and compassionate while he explained the treatment plan. We knew she was in good hands. I was so touched to hear that Dr Joe walked out to the car with my husband who was holding our daughter in his arms after her sedation - so caring. My daughter had an accident and injured her tooth on a Saturday night. I tried to call my dentist they were closed and there was no way to even leave a message. Sunday morning, I started trying to call any dentist I could for some advice, and thankfully Dr. Joe quickly responded to my message. He took a long time on the phone with me, asking a lot of questions, and talking me through the situation. He was really, really great, and really really helpful. And on a Sunday morning! I'm completely impressed, and I'm going to be looking into changing my insurance so I can take my kids to Dr. Joe. Thank you, Dr. Joe!! read more

Dr. Joe makes me really mad. I'm mad because I never went to a dentist like this when I was a kid. His place is so awesome and such a positive experience, that I can't help being a bit jealous of my own kids. I have a 6 year old and a two year old and they both love coming here. Also unlike other pediatric dentists they don't try to sell you on the x-rays. If you say you want to wait, they are totally accepting of your decision to not expose your children to unnecessary radiation. Also I should mention that this is our second pediatric dentist and Dr. Joe is at least 100 times better than the last, which really was actually quite pleasant. read more

Kids grow up fast and my son has been seeing Dr.Joe since he was a grade-schooler. Our opinion of him hasn't changed after all these years. He is the best.
