Before she passed, my husband and I sat down with Rocco to preplan her funeral arrangements. As difficult as that was, he showed us professionalism, kindness but most importantly, compassion. When she passed, Rocco handled her with care and respect. At the wake, we had a video playing with a lot of photos and few of her favorite songs that Rocco had put together. Then we switched it to her favorite music for everyone to hear. He even had her favorite character Stitch on her prayer cards. He did things that we didn't even think of to make sure Paula was honored. Most importantly, Rocco and Maryann made sure she looked beautiful. The cancer took over her whole body but you would never know it on how beautiful she looked. She looked the best she ever did since battling cancer for 2-1/2 years. We were going to have a closed casket, just open for family. When we saw her and how beautiful Rocco and Maryann made her, we decided to keep it open. The DeToro family will forever be grateful to Rocco, Maryann and the rest of the Kurzawa staff.

Captain John had also taken care of her brother's scattering, so I gave him a call once again. He was very compassionate, and sorry for my loss. We made arrangements for the scattering. He told me what he needed as for paperwork and everything like that. We arranged the scattering on a Wednesday afternoon. The day of the scattering, I met his partner, captain Mike. Captain Mike explained to me again, what would be happening that day. He also was very compassionate, very friendly, and very understanding. We got underway for the scattering area.. I had explained that while my partner was not religious, she was spiritual. When we got to the scattering area, he said some very nice words, about how her spirit was now free. I played a song which really meant a lot for the both of us, and then it was time. I was the one who did the actual scattering. Afterwards, we dropped some roses in the water, we circled the scattering area with the boat, and then Captain Mike rang the bell eight times, signaling the changing of the watch. The sea had her now. Yes, it was sad, but at the same time, I felt relieved. A load had been taken off my shoulders, as I was able to complete her final wish. She is where she wanted to be. She is a Norwegian who has returned to the sea..Saying that, I'm still gonna miss the hell out of that woman. Thank you, Captain John, and Captain Mike, for helping me honor her final wishes.
