Conveniently tucked in between my house and my favourite dog park (Shubie park), this shop was built as a custom extension off a video rental, pizza place, ice cream joint combination dealie on Montebello and is really quite lovely on the inside! Built around a lovely (and big!) faux-tree, the interior is worth a look whether you have a Fido at home or not. All your pet supply table stakes are on hand: tons and tons of food brands (plus the offer to order anything in that you don't see on the shelves), treats, toys, leashes, collars, sweaters, vitamins and supplements, even cookbooks for home-cooking for your pooch's palate! Now, I could easily stop there and land at a solid three-star but it's the added steps that this crew has taken to enhance the community that really push into four, borderline five-star territory. This I know, again, because I insisted on asking them 127 questions while I was there. Here's the scoop: - They custom-make 'Shubie Snacks' with Kathleen from Tailwagrrrs (my favourite doggy daycare), with all the proceeds going to maintain the dog park at Shubie. I think they mentioned they've raised some $30,000 since August? That sounds crazy...but I'm pretty sure that's what they said. Are you a regular at Shubie Park? You know that gazebo and all the brand new benches? Yeah. Planet Paws built those. - The owner is seriously educated in the pet nutrition (for example, did you know some of the biggest brands of pet food are made by Mars and Nestle?) and clearly very passionate about helping his customers. Long story short: one of my dogs is a delicate flower who can't eat anything without full-body meltdowns. The owner has given me tons to think about when it comes to his health including some options that would basically keep my money out of their hands (non-kibble/store-bought diets, etc.). For him, the health of my pooch is more important. And that's pretty awesome. - In addition to all the mainstream food options, Planet Paws also carried a huge freezer full of raw meals. I won't get into the whole nutritional side of why that's important but will instead leave it at them supporting other local pet food suppliers rather than sticking exclusively with the big corporations.

Brand new on the scene for pampered pets and their indulgent owners (hey - I can say it because I…read moream one), PetValu just opened a new location in the Tacoma Drive/Main Street madness right next to the Dave Doolittle's dive bar. It looked cold, boxy and out of place from the outside but I'm glad I took a minute to step in the door yesterday. On the inside, this big box store manages to score some boutique street cred with really nice displays and organization, friendly staff who really seemed to know their stuff from what I overheard them telling other customers, and higher end products than your standard Pets Unlimited. They have a TON of different food brands (more for pooches than cats, I think) and a lot of interesting pet health and safety products which I haven't seen elsewhere. The only downsides for me are that they don't sell the food we buy and that while they're merchandized nicely, not all of their prices are displayed yet. The staff themselves even had to look up some products to help other shoppers. I'd say give them a few weeks to sort that out and they'll be in much better shape to help you out.

Never bring your dog to their groomers! We are new here and decided to bring a dog to Pet smart…read moregroomers. It took more than 3 hours for Maltese, plus all fur was different length. But the worst that they scratch my dog all over his body! Now he is scared of groomers and we still waiting until all those scratches will get better. I wish I will have enough power to close them or at least to fire with references the guy who actually groomed my dog.

The fish are fine. It's the people that are unkind. What can you say about a business that responds to criticism with "Haters gonna hate" and where a negative review disappears? Here's the scoop: My son called and asked if they were interested in buying his large 1-year-old plecos. Someone on the phone said, "Sure, but we prob won't give you more than $15 or $20." He didn't say if it was per fish or for the whole lot (we had about 10). So off we drove all the way there. Once we got there, my son repeated, "I called about bringing in my plecos." One of the two guys there said, "Oh sure, no problem. We'll just put the bag in the aquarium to acclimatize them." We walked around the store a bit, and when we went to check out, my son said, "So do I get a store credit or cash for the plecos?" That's when the guy said, "Oh, we don't really have a demand for them. We'll just take them." So essentially, on the phone they said they'd buy the fish, and once we got there and put the bag in their tank, they said, "Oh, we don't have a need for them" and they took them from my son for nothing. He of course being a kid was too shy to say anything, so 1 Fish 2 Fish got our fish for free and disappointed a customer who will never be going back. Either they're forgetful or dishonest, waiting for a kid to put his fish in the tank before saying that they wouldn't pay him. Either way, not a good way to treat customers. The $15 isn't going to break our bank. It's the unethical nature of taking advantage of a kid who has come all this way, and is now too shy to complain (probably something they were counting on, maybe?). Anyway, no need to patronize a business who treats their young customers like this, when there are more honest folks out there like Aquarica (who do what they promise). The 1 star was only for the fish.

I wouldn't…read moresay it's because they do anything crazy impressive over other pet stores, but they're close by, they have a wide selection of products, and they seem to know enough to answer most customer questions as they come up. Their loyalty program is often sending us home with unexpected free bags of food and their behind the cash selection of food supplements and vitamins are a great resource when you run into trouble with pet health. Typically I get a little uppity about supporting chains like Pets Unlimited so Global Pet Foods makes me feel that I'm giving my business to people who do care about animals - not just the ones owned by customers, but pets and animal rights as a whole.

Anything from homemade speciality treats to bags of pig ears. Stuffed animals to chew toys for that special furry animal in your life. What a cool store and they will even let you take your animal in if they are friendly.

Petstuff is GREAT!…read more Petstuff is a local not for profit that supports and trains people with mental illness or disabilities employment skills. The goal of working at Petstuff is for these folks to get permanent employment. I personally think it's a fabulous idea and it's what brought me to their store in 2009 for the first time. The employees at Petstuff are very sweet and kind. They love to help you out and always welcome a furry visitor. They've got a good selection of food, toys, grooming supplies, and everything else you could need for your pet. For people who are training for other work opportunities, I am always very impressed at how knowledgeable the employees are. They really do a fantastic job! I haven't had any personal experience with their groomer but have heard from numerous people that they do a great job. The pugs may be visiting that area of the business soon!

His name is Des, he is very relaxing, but FAST and reasonably priced. Plus, he doesn't overlap his clients, which is such a nice change from chain groomers. The store itself upstairs also carries cute little gift ideas like soaps and candles, locally made. Definitely worth a stop.
