Irmo Pet Retreat - Love my dogs.

Fantastic people working at Irmo Pet Retreat. Kay the owner takes a lot of pride in running the…read moreestablishment. She is always there and makes sure everything is run to perfection. They send me photos of my dog on special occasions, and he is always happy when I drop him off, and is just as happy when I pick him up. It really is a retreat for pets. I feel like our precious pup also gets a vacation when we do! Five stars all around!

We boarded our dogs Oakley and Theo from July 19th-28th at Irmo Pet Retreat. We had used them…read morebefore and never had an issue but this is a big enough red flag that I wanted to share. When we dropped them off, Theo (our Labradoodle) had a cut on the end of his back from trying to crawl under our house and scraped it against the concrete. We weren't worried about it since we had been putting Neosporin on it and he couldn't reach it so it wasn't being messed with. The employee there mentioned they had a spray they could use on it and my husband said that would be fine to use it if they wanted. When we got back from our trip, Aaron went to go pick up the dogs. Once he got there, the employee said, "I don't want you to be shocked so I'll tell you now but...all the hair on Theo's back has fallen out." 1st problem: our dogs hair fell out...and we weren't contacted. Sure enough, his whole back was bare and there were some sore spots on his back that you could tell hurt him to touch. We took him to the vet, spent hundreds of dollars running tests and taking skin samples and trying to figure out what could've happened. All the vets and nurses were totally baffled and frustrated alongside us. The vet gave us a call later saying his bloodwork came back fine but the best they could all figure was that it was a chemical burn...they suggested maybe he rolled in cleaning products or something and I needed to figure out what products Irmo Pet Retreat uses. 2nd problem: Our dog lost all hair on his back and has sores from chemical burns...and we weren't contacted. I'll try to attach the screenshots of the email I sent to irmo pet retreat and their response and photos of Theo's poor back/sores. I'm honestly confused and just don't know how to proceed. It would be one thing if an accident happened and then they contacted us...but it's another thing that this happened in their care, and very alarming that they didn't contact us with his significant hair loss. He could've had several things wrong with him and definitely would've needed to be taken to the vet. SO. Seems very shady and anywho, we're pretty disappointed to say the least.

On October 14, 2025 we had to put asleep our 14.5 year dog. He was my life. It was the hardest thing we ever had to do. I still cry everyday over it. Dr. Rickman and the staff were so caring about our needs and feelings. My husband and I were extremely devastated over our loss. Dr. Rickman personally sent us a sympathy card with a sincere handwritten note to us. It meant the absolute world to my husband and myself. Since then we added a puppy to our family. Dr. Rickman just neutered him 2 weeks ago and the surgery went flawlessly. Dr. Rickman and the entire staff was there for us from start to finish. You are not just a random person when you walk through their door. They answered all my hundreds of questions and concerns with such attentiveness. I think it is very important that my veterinarian actually knows me and my animal. Not just from a file. Dr. Rickman is absolutely a genius, a brilliant surgeon, and really cares for the animals. He knows I am a super anxious person and I only want what's best for my baby. He always puts my fears at bay and ALWAYS provides me the truth, even if I don't like the answer. To me, that is how a vet should be. If you are contemplating on switching to Dutch Fork, do yourself a favor and do it. We have only seen Dr. Rickman at Dutch Fork (Except if he was away or in an absolute emergency). I am sure that all the vets are just as attentive and committed as he is. But we will be sticking with Dr. Rickman wherever he goes.

    Kelly's Pet Services

I had originally hired another national pet service to care for my two cats while I was out of town…read morebecause I had used this service before and was thrilled! This time, my sitter did not show up on time, And texted me that she was running a few minutes late...That's fine, things happen! Two hours later, she still had not arrived, which is significant because one of my cats needs to have insulin at a very particular time. I am lucky I give her the shot at the appropriate time, and we left for our trip, for which we were now several hours behind. The Sitter said she would contact the company and get somebody else to cover for her for the rest of my trip. She never did it, so I called the company 30 minutes later, which was the grace period I gave her to take care of the problem. The company said that they would find somebody for the rest of the trip. They did not. I contacted Kelly's Pet Services, and they were on the job immediately! Todd S, one of the owners went to my house, himself, within a few minutes. He checked on both cats, and the diabetic cat hissed at him, which I expected. Because it was not the time of day for her injection, Todd checked on the cats and went back for my kitty's nighttime injection. Todd returned throughout my time away, and was successful in giving my Kitty her insulin injection and in feeding both kitties. Of course, he cleaned the litter box, and even brought my mail in! What amazed me even more was that when I got my invoice upon returning home, the charge was much, much less than the national company I had hired originally to care for my cats. Todd's communication skills were beyond the call of duty. He texted me continually, providing photographs of my diabetic Kitty and letting me know how both cats were doing. I will never use another pet service again! Kelly's Pet Services is the best! They came through for me and my sweet kitty when I was desperate! My cat would have died had not been there to help, as returning home from Louisiana to North Carolina would have been impossible to get there in time for her injection!

In the past, I have used Kelly's Pet Service without incident. Recently, I booked Kelly's for 2…read morestandard visits (per Kelly's website a standard visit is 20-30 minutes) per day for at total of 10 visits. I was booked with dog sitter Jordan (F) and I emailed Kelly's to see if there would be a meet and greet beforehand since Ben had been my past sitter. Todd responded via email that this was not necessary since Jordan was Ben's fiancé and I had met her previously. During my absence, I could see on my home cameras that a man, whom I have never met, was coming to my home and only staying for 11-14 minutes instead of the agreed upon standard visit of 20-30 minutes. When I expressed concern to Kelly's, I was told that my sitter was changed. I wrote to Todd "Out of respect to your clients and their homes Kelly's should inform clients when there is a change in sitters. This could have easily been communicated through text, email or the PetPocketbook website". Todd's response to why I was not being provided the 20-30 minute visits was, " I apologize if the visits have not been 20 minutes. We have been very busy and I am trying to get to doggies as quickly as possible". So basically Todd is telling me that Kelly's overbooked for the week and is skimping time on ALL of their customers. Knowing that my dog was only getting 11-14 minute visits, twice a day, was heartbreaking to me so I had family visit my dog in my absence since Kelly's chose to cut corners.
