You are able to pull up a map of the 20 plus sculptures online and make a day of visiting each piece. It was made of made of granite, steel, and stainless steel and is the work of Shawn Phillip Morin. The stainless steel piece is sitting on top of some steel beams that are stacked 4 high, with a granite slab on top to provide a flat surface to lay the steel on. It is an abstract piece and I do not know Morin's inspiration or meaning of the piece. The stainless steel piece is the main part of the sculpture. It was not as shiny as I have seen it in other photos the day that I visited it. It has a piece cut out of it that resembles a funnel. On the right side of the stainless you will find a bunch of little raised dots and they are most dense in the upper right corner and become less dense as the move away from the corner. There is a small placard on the ground next to the sculpture that has its name and artist on it, along with a QR code that was meant to be scanned and would give you more information about the piece. Being that the sculpture is located on the UIndy campus there is a lot of parking available, however, most of it requires a parking permit. I just parked in an open spot, got out and took a closer look. I was not in the spot long. As with most sculptures that I have visited and reviewed, this is probably not a very long stop. I was there less than 5 minutes. So, you may want to consider planning out additional stops at many of the other wonderful pieces of public art on campus, or making this stop part of a larger itinerary to maximize your time and trip. Dot to Dot is a bright and shiny abstract sculpture using a variety of materials to attract the…read morevisitor's attention as they pull onto the campus of University of Indianapolis. Located just west of the Christel DeHaan Fine Arts Center, this sculpture is just northwest of the building. The top half of the sculpture is a burnished steel block that tapers as it rises. One side of the block is densely perforated with attached nodes that become less dense as you view towards the center. The other half of the steel is notched and cleaved. This all rests upon levels of stacked black metal girders (4 layers crisscrossed) and topped with a white pedestal for the steel to rest on securely. The piece was created by Shawn Phillip Morin. It is part of the…read moreLilly Oncology on Canvas program, which is a program that affords individuals affected by cancer with an opportunity to share their stories through art. The mural was painted by an anonymous cancer patient in 2010. It is of a pinwheel with a brown handle, and colorful petals on a green background. This mural is supposed to illustrate the journey taken by a mother and her daughter, who was diagnosed with cancer and soon saw it spread to other parts of her body. Each petal brings awareness to the different areas cancer can grow in. You can see that the petals resemble cancer awareness ribbons. Everyone knows that pink is for breast cancer. But also gray is for brain cancer, green is for kidney cancer, lavender is for all cancers, black is for melanoma, and blue is for stomach cancer. The I love murals with a good message and story. This is a simple mural with a complex story. I love the concept of these murals. Anyway it is a nice piece. Definitely worth a look. As with most murals, though, this is probably not a very long stop, even you may reflect a bit more on this one. I was there less than 5 minutes. The mother of a woman who was fighting cancer created the image of a flower made up of a number of colored ribbons. Each ribbon represents a part of the body that can be afflicted by cancer. The pink represents the breast which was the original site of the daughter's cancer. The emerald green represents the liver where the cancer spread and the yellow, her bones. The tan center is supposed to have small pink dots which represent the cancer spreading to other parts of the body. It is quite sad to read the stories on the plaques, but knowing that the people who created these paintings found strength to deal with the struggle is uplifting. Review #1503

This is a mural that is not actually painted directly on the wall. It consists of six individual…read morepanels mounted on a wall to form one picture. It is a small mural, even with the 6 panels. It is the work of Matt Eickoff and was made in 2007. Even though it has been around a while, it is still in great shape. The colors are very vivid and bright. The artist intended to display his experience with riding the bus to work by incorporating mini narratives between all of the people at the bus stop in the mural. It tells a story of sorts. The mural also has the city scape in the background. The mural is located on the side of Financial Health FCU, overlooking a small parking lot and facing MuckRock's Fire, Fire mural. So, parking and getting out to get a closer look at this mural is simple and easy, if that is what you want to do. This piece is very busy, but it works and I like it you can see the story the the artist is trying to tell and the colors really pop. This mural is part of the Jiffy Lube Mural Program, in conjunction with the Indianapolis Art…read moreCouncil. It is the work of Barb Stahl, who painted this interesting piece in 2018. The mural is intended to celebrate Brownsburg rich history. The mural is not painted directly on the wall and was painted on an 8' x 20' piece of dibond aluminum in Stahl's studio. The wall of the Jiffy Lube was prepped and painted prior to the mural being installed. The mural depicts a man developing photos the good old fashioned way. It you look closely at the photos, both developed and the tray, you will see symbolism. The developed photos represent the past and present, including images of the Malachy church, the little league, an old train, and numerous other tributes to Brownsburg. On the other hand, the photos in the developing trays show a glimpse of the future featuring the redeveloped Green Street and more of the town's future projects. When developing this mural Stahl paid a lot of attention to detail. The walls window are painted with a frame similar to the mural and if you notice three things sticking out of the wall to the left of the mural, that is supposed to be binding of a book. The artwork is very nice and the mural looks like a picture itself. It is very creative and well done. In addition to the research and development time, it took about 80 hours to complete. I really like this mural. This is another home run, that is part of the Jiffy Lube project and definitely worth a peek. Parking to get a closer look is very easy. There are spots behind the Jiffy Lube, or at the restaurant next door. I just parked in front of the mural. Anyway, as with most murals that I have visited and reviewed, this is not a long stop. At first, this mural isn't as eye catching as most of the Jiffy Lube/Arts Council of Indianapolis…read moremurals that have gone up around town the last few years. The colors are subdued and the image, though lifelike, doesn't seem unusual enough to catch your eye either. But upon closer look, you see that the entire north wall of the building has been turned into a giant photo album page. Real metal rings have been installed on the left side of the wall to look like they are part of a 3-ring binder. The mural and even the real windows on the wall are framed with the small corner tabs that used to hold photos in place. The mural shows a man developing photos. The photos are part of Brownsburg's history showing buildings and some people/activities that are dear to the local residents. The thought behind the mural was the connection between the town and the photos, both are developing. Barb Stahl created the mural in 2018. She has been an artist/muralist in the Indy area for over 30 years and her works can be found throughout the metro area. Review #2295

This mural is located in front of Brookside School 54. It was painted by Will Schlough, as part of…read morethe Arts Council of Indianapolis's 46 for XLVI mural initiative. It is actually a very creative mural. It is on 3 low walls that are divided by 2 sets of stairs. It depicts a pair of scissors with construction paper cutouts representing each of the four seasons. Flowers for spring, snowflake fro winter, leaves for fall, and a sunflower. There are a couple of lady bugs in the mural and there is construction paper at the end. It is a very colorful and eye catching mural. Even though it is in the title, it took me awhile to see it. But once I did, I was like, ohhhhhh, I get it now. I guess I was slow that day. The mural wraps around the wall and also goes up the wall of the two sets of stairs that are dividing the mural. I like the mural. It is artistically pretty good work and very imaginative. Schlough is really talented. He is also the artist behind the Apple Catapult, that is down the road from this one. There is free street parking near the mural for you to get out and take a closer look. Just remember, it is in front of an active school so you may want to avoid the beginning and the end of the school day because it will be a bit busy, plus you will look like a creeper. This is a neat mural. However, as with most murals that I have reviewed, this is probably not a very long stop. I was there less than 5 minutes. You can do a strategic and safe slow rolling drive by and probably get a decent look at the mural from the comfort of your vehicle. This art installation is on permanent display in Crown Hill Cemetery just west and south of the…read more38th Street underpass between halves of the grounds. Back in 2003, this was one of ten pieces created to celebrate the cemetery's 140th anniversary. This one was selected as a keeper! Artist Michael B Wilken created the piece out of aluminum and set the piece at eye level by placing it on a large block. There are multiple shapes that are connected like relationships between humans. As in all cases, some of the pieces are stable and supportive, while other pieces are reliant upon those pieces for support and appear they could slide off at any time. The artist hoped that viewers would be able to see the connections between the pieces and have the viewers reflect upon their own relationships to determine if they were the supporting type or precarious ones. The sculpture is made of bronze and depicts a pioneer family, a mother clutching a book to her chest, a father carrying a rifle, a son carrying an axe and a daughter with a spindle. The sculpture has earned a lot of frequent flier miles in its time. It was moved to Garfield Park in 1954 after being deemed a traffic hazard, only to be moved back to its original location due to public pressure in 1969. In 2010 it was put in to storage to protect it from the Cultural Trail construction. It was brought back to its current location in 2014. This piece sits at a major intersection and is small, but still eye catching. For me, the sculpture is more intriguing and valuable due to the story behind it. If it was just a plain old sculpture I would have been like...mehhh! Anyway, there is street parking available near the sculpture or you could probably even see it from the comfort of your vehicle and do a slow rolling drive-by. This is probably not a very long stop. I was there less than 5 minutes. Though most visitors to Fountain Square notice the central Lady Spray Fountain located in the…read moremiddle of the intersection, some may overlook the statue/fountain across the street. "Pioneer Family" is a bronze statue that was created in 1924 by famed local artist Myra Reynolds Richards to adorn the second version of the fountain in the intersection. This statue stood there from 1924 to 1954 before being deemed a traffic hazard and relocated to Garfield Park. After a 15 year absence, neighbors fought to bring this statue back and after another ten years, placed on a new pedestal and fountain. But historic preservationist wanted a return to a fountain that looked more like the original, so this statue was again removed. Fortunately, it was removed from storage after four years and placed along the newly completed Cultural Trail in 2014. The Pioneer Family was originally dedicated to local politician Ralph Hill. This abstract sculpture is the work of Jerald Jacquard and is located in the front of the…read moreIndianapolis Fire Fighters Museum/Union 416. It was made in 1999. This sculpture was commissioned by the Riley Area Development Corporation as part of the MassAttractions program, an art program that placed art along Indianapolis' s world famous Massachusetts Avenue. It find it odd the way it is set up. The sculpture sits on a cement pedestal that is on a cement pad. The sculpture itself is made of steel that was painted to help slow down the effects of corrosion. The piece is intended to depict contrasting thoughts and emotions. I do not know where to even start to accurately depict such a thing. Well, if you ask me, the sculpture kind of resembles the symbol that Prince (the Purple One) changed his name to a few years ago or an upside down fish hook. Anyway, now that you will never be able to unsee my comparison. The sculpture looks like a saw formed into an abstract T. Maybe it is just me but this is way too deep for my blood and I am not a fan. Being over 20 years old, the sculpture is starting to show signs of wear. The aqua color that the steel sculpture is painted is stating to fade and wear off. Luckily there is a lot of other stuff to see right by this sculpture and should definitely not be your primary destination, but a stop on your way to a more captivating attraction. There is a lot a metered street parking available to park, get out and take a closer look at this sculpture. As with most sculptures that I have visited and reviewed, this is not a very long stop. If you look at it now, it is hard to believe that only 30 years ago that Mass Avenue was nearly…read moreabandoned and considered a blighted area. The City wanted to turn the area around and with the help of a number of initiatives, began adding art to brighten the look of the area. One of the pieces eventually added in 1999 was Visual and Mental Paradoxes that sits near the intersection of Mass Ave and St Clair. The piece was created by IU-Bloomington professor Jerald Jacquard. The elevated metal sculpture has two flat surfaces that are secured at right angles to each other. The metal has a variety of shapes cut from the sides forming an irregular shape that rises to a horizontal section at the top. The metal has been painted to help reduce rust from taking over, but the piece does show some signs of aging. Although it was briefly not viewable on site during the construction of a new building on the corner, the piece was not repaired. There is also a double pedestal below the art: a stone block sits on a pad and a gray cylindrical shaped pedestal lifts the piece even higher. Review #1743
