This Missouri State Historic Site honors the boyhood home and memory of Gen. John Pershing…read more Pershing was a notable officer that served during World War I. When we stopped in the small town of Laclede, the buildings were closed unfortunately, but there is a well marked walking tour. His boyhood Gothic Gingerbread home has been preserved. Nearby the house stands a statue of Pershing surrounded by a War memorial. Nearby, is the small schoolhouse where Pershing taught school before joining the military. The schoolhouse is filled with exhibits describing Pershing's life. A block west is a museum (that was closed) and a memorial garden that describes and honors service people that are buried abroad, a passion of Pershing. The garden is filled with symbolic calyrops and poppies. I recommend checking the hours to take advantage of the museum and tours of the home. There is parking and even a picnic table with grill if you want to have a meal. The grounds are accessible. I enjoyed learning about Pershing and his humble beginnings. This Missouri state historical site is governed by the MO parks department and is a wonderful little stop just a mile off US 36. The square block sits in the heart of this small town - population 345. The home is preserved and is next to an old church, the visitors center, and a veterans memorial surrounds a large statue of General Pershing; one of Missouri's most important native son's and a man that modern Europe will be forever be indebted to. It's worth a stop, you could easily see the highlights in a 5 minute trip off the highway or spend an hour to learn the story.
