I wanted to replace a professional portrait that I had been using for about ten years, and I chose…read moreS72 because Jeff's portfolio looked different from the usual corporate headshots. His portraits seemed to tell a story about the person rather than simply produce a flattering photograph. That was exactly my experience. Jeff gave very clear direction on posture, positioning and expression, which was particularly helpful because I don't naturally know how to pose for a camera. He worked remarkably efficiently; the actual photography took very little time, but he produced a wide variety of genuinely different images. What I particularly appreciated was that the photographs didn't all tell the same story. I ended up with a traditional executive portrait that works perfectly for professional purposes, but also some less conventional, more editorial portraits that show considerably more personality. They are all recognizably me, but different versions of me. The hardest part was narrowing down the photographs I wanted to keep. There were simply a lot of good ones. Jeff isn't inexpensive, but the quality of the work justified the cost for me. I expect to use these photographs for years. In a competitive professional world, how we present ourselves matters. A good portrait can give you an edge. Jeff knows how to find and sharpen that edge.

(The last time I felt a need to do something similar, I got a tattoo). However, this time I wanted to celebrate the moment in an entirely different way. At first I thought, boudoir photos? Hmmm....a little tacky, full of boa feathers and cheesy poses, right? But the Daily Candy blurb was compelling enough for me to look at Lolo's website and I liked what I found. As another reviewer has written: sensual, timeless, natural, coquettish and most importantly, classy while revealing the true essence of the subject (or so it seemed). I knew instantly that this was what I wanted, and arranged an initial consultation to explore the idea further. As soon as I met Lolo and saw her studio, I knew I would follow through. She has lots of fun settings and props and costumes. And you can shoot in her studio or in her barn (yes, imagine me, being photographed in a barn!) However, I was like a little girl playing dress up, and it was such fun! And you can even bring your own items from home....from jewelry to lingerie to your favorite dresses and shoes.....as much or as little as you want. I have a vintage 60's ballgown (think Breakfast at Tiffany's) which I have always wanted to be photographed in, in really fun, whimsical poses. As you can probably imagine, my shoot was an absolute blast (albeit a tad cold in the barn). And I loved the champagne, chocolates and ginger biscuits that helped sustain me throughout the 5 hour shoot. :-) Lolo is a great photographer to work with and I can't wait to see my pics! Update 3/8/07: I absolutely LOVE my photos. They turned out even better than I could possibly imagine. Lolo is an exquisite photographer, and captured me in my many moods. Seriously, if I wasn't already me I would probably fall in love with myself based on these photos alone....my vanity alone is going to go through the roof. He's very professional, friendly, quick to respond, and just amazing to work with overall. I had just started wedding planning when I ran into a friend who told me Augie was their photographer and shared his info. We had looked through a number of photographers, but Augie's work stood out to us through all of it--his photos truly captured the feeling of each moment, and we loved everything in his portfolio. When we reached out, he responded so quickly and answered all our questions right away. For our engagement shoot, it was my husband's first time doing a formal photoshoot. Augie came very prepared, offered great tips, and made us feel completely at ease. He was so easy to talk to and work with, and we genuinely had such a fun time with him! He was also flexible with timing and weather to make sure we could get the best lighting. We were blown away by his ability to notice something special in just a few seconds and turn it into a beautifully captured moment. For our wedding day, Augie was even more impressive. I had shared our (very full) itinerary with him ahead of time, and I was surprised to notice that he knew it by heart. When we started running behind, he gently but efficiently helped move things along. Even though it was his first time at our venue, he had an incredible eye for finding perfect spots, turning a simple fence into a magical backdrop. He worked seamlessly around the golfers at our venue, guiding us at the right times and capturing the sweetest in-between moments. He also accommodated all our specific requests, including photos with our sports car and dress details. We absolutely love our wedding photos and all the special moments he preserved. We were also so impressed with how fast he sent us our sneak peek photos--it was such a fun surprise to get highlights so quickly. Overall, I can't stress enough how grateful we are for Augie and everything he captured during our engagement shoot and wedding day. We're so happy with all the memories he helped capture that we will cherish forever, and I truly can't recommend him enough.

I actually found Jennifer after searching online for photographers in San Francisco and her work immediately stood out. Her style felt fresh and unconventional -- more documentary and journalistic than traditional -- and I especially loved her use of black and white photography, which was a big reason we chose her. The day started at our hotel, where she jumped between our separate rooms to capture my wife and me getting ready. Before she had even gotten to our rooms, she had already scouted the perfect location for our first look. The moment was absolutely incredible, and she handled everything; we didn't have to do a thing but follow her lead. That professional confidence continued at City Hall. She has a masterful familiarity with the building. She took full control of the shoot, guiding us as she told us exactly where to stand, how to pose, and where to move next so we could just relax and enjoy the moment. As a photographer myself, I really appreciated her confidence and professionalism. All we had to do was follow instructions and be present. She knows San Francisco City Hall inside and out -- the lighting, the angles, the timing, and the key locations that truly matter -- every shot felt deliberate and it showed. The technical skill here is top-notch-- the compositions were beautiful, the balance of each frame was spot-on, and her gorgeous color grading. We received around 300 images, and the quality is so consistent that I plan to print every last one of them in large format to ensure we have a permanent physical archive. When we received the final package, we were so touched -- she sent our photos on a beautiful USB drive along with printed images, some sweets, and other thoughtful details. It was the perfect finishing touch to a genuinely wonderful experience. If you're getting married at City Hall -- or anywhere in San Francisco -- Jennifer Michelson / A Girl and a Camera is exceptional. Thank you Jennifer! Laura and Junior.
