Had I known, we would have split our lunch. Food was simple, but good. Wurst, Kraut, yellow mustard and brown bread. Would have preferred a Dijon mustard and some butter for the bread. It was very dry. They gave us ice for our water! A first in Germany

I greatly enjoyed my meal here on a sunny Saturday evening…read more My friend and I were in need of sustenance and fluids after wandering the hauptstrasse in old town Heidelberg. We had seen this place with its menu posted outside earlier in the day and had decided to seek it out again for a break. The menu (entirely in German) was simple and straight-forward. They focused on burgers and pizzas, with enough options to please any eater. Both my friend and I ordered veggie burgers and I got sweet potato fries as my side. The burger was great. I love a veggie patty and this one was good. It was blended nicely together and did not completely fall apart as you ate it. The extra veggies on the patty also added nicely to the burger. As for my sweet potato fries, they were good but under-seasoned. I wanted to add salt to them, but there were no salt shakers to be seen in the establishment. My friend seemed to enjoy her regular fries a great deal. The restaurant was clean and cool compared to the hot summer day. It had a modern, hipster design with lots of bench seats and small tables. There was also wifi for patrons. My only complaint (besides the fries) was some comments made from the workers while we were there. They could tell we were tourists (given the English) and politely asked where we were from. When I said America, one of them tried to make a Trump joke (which is a sore spot for me and not the first time someone has tried to bring this name up while I have been in Germany). They also kept correcting my German (especially after I told them where I was from). At first, I appreciated it as I am trying to improve, but after a while just felt rude and nit-picky. These interactions just left me feeling uneasy and made me happy to leave when we did.

This place is right across the "road" from the Cathedral and has a decent setting. the staff speaks really good English and understood that two of my kids had food allergies and they were able to accommodate. We got our boys with allergies bratwurst with fries and they really enjoyed it. They both commented how they liked how crispy the fries were. As for my other son, he got a butter pretzel with a salad and he also really liked it. I ordered the bierschnitzel with scalloped potatoes but instead got bratwurst with a bier sauce and fries. My meal was delicious, but not what I ordered. I'd of ordered something different otherwise. My wife's flammkuchen was very good. She ordered the honey with arugula and walnuts. I ate about a third of it. We'd go back, but only after trying some other places.

The quiet smooth jazz and torches on the wall make it a relaxing, comforting place to grab a bite. The open pizza oven in the back also adds to the ambiance. We tried the Ziguenerschnitzel and one of the flatbread pizzas. I was worried about the schnitzel after the waitress warned me it was chicken with an apologetic eye I proceeded anyway, slightly concerned. It was good, among the better schnitzels I've had in Heidelberg, but not among the greatest for certain. The pepers and sauce were very good, but the chicken itself just had a pre-made feeling. The flatbread on the other hand was fantastic. It was obviously fresh made in the oven and was delicious. It was also huge. It probably would have been enough for two people. We each also had a beer and were pleasantly surprised that it came with a fresh made pretzel each. I guess this make sense considering the name of the place. This was also very good and nice and warm from the oven. Service was good. It was quick and friendly.
