Let's begin with the positives. The bunkhouse is situated in a great location, between Beddgelert and Caernarfon, and is within easy reach of most of the Snowdonia National Park, and the pillowcases and sheets were fresh. And now the negatives. It may be that, once, this bunkhouse was well cared for, clean and loved. No longer, however. I stayed here with a group of friends in September, 2015. I've worked in Outdoor Education, camped, stayed in bothies, bunkhouses and hostels, and I'm sorry to say that Pentre Bach missed the mark. The communal area hadn't been cleaned for a long time: there were spiders' webs with trussed up wood lice, old food in the fridge and a blown can of beans on top of it. Upstairs, the mattresses were covered with mattress protectors that had clearly seen, and survived, long campaigns. The toilets and the showers across the yard were serviceable, but the showers spilled a good percentage down the walls before reaching the shower-heads and, again, the condition of the buildings and the fittings was tired and grubby. The owners have an outdoor activities enterprise as well as the bunkhouse - it would be of benefit if they extended the rigorous standards that they must, perforce, apply to that venture, to their bunkhouse. read more
