I'm a beginner quilter and bought my first Bernina 560E from Pennington. Vicky was my teacher and she is amazing, friendly and very knowledgeable. As I've been sewing since age 16 and now in my late 60's learning a Bernina machine was easier than anticipated with Vicky's instruction. The fabrics are beautiful and the staff is very helpful. Great place to shop especially when making an heirloom quilt that needs to last for many, many years. As I've only taken one class, so far, the teacher (Sue) was also friendly and excellent - her work is amazing. read more

I've been shopping at PQW for years. I haven't been there for two years (COVID) and decided to order some batting so I would have an excuse to go there again. (I don't live near the shop, so it's a whole day trip.) They ordered the wrong size batting (they wrote down the size I wanted on a scrap of paper, but ordered the wrong size). So, OK, I bought it anyway and will make it work. But the woman who checked me out broke my heart. She was making disparaging remarks about the batting I ordered. I've been using it for 20 years and she was criticizing my choice. Loudly. I used to work in retail. The policy is "take their money and thank them" instead of ridiculing them. It was so odd, I didn't know what to say. So I said "I'll take my stuff and go." I wasn't going to pick a fight. The shop is closing and maybe she is upset about that, but she shouldn't take it out on the customer. Guess that was my last trip to PQW. read more

I waited to write my review after several interactions at this quilt shop. Prior reviews on Yelp are not positive so I wanted to be sure before I wrote mine! In short, this store is fantastic and the workers are wonderful. I've had nothing but kind and courteous assistance from all staff in-person and on the phone. I called looking for specific fabric and they told me where it was over the phone. I came in and got what I wanted on clearance! I brought my serger in for their repair guy who comes every two weeks. My serger was ready the day after! Quilt shops like this are a dying breed and I fully support and recommend this business. Apparel sewists can also find fabric here, but not a lot. The quality of fabric is waaaaaay better than what you find at JoAnn's but you will pay more for it. It's worth it though. Additionally they have a clean public restroom which is essential for me as I have to drive 25 minutes to get there and back. Also, they fawn over my baby every time we come in! read more

The fabric selection and variety are terrific. Lots of patterns, too. The downside for me, contrary to others who have reviewed the shop, is that I don't think the staff members are very helpful or at all welcoming. I stood at the cutting table for about a minute and a half before the staff members greeted or helped me (and this was after I had wandered around the store for at least five minutes). Three were directly in my line of sight, two of them were chatting with each other. There were no other customers in the store. After selecting some possible fabrics, I felt I needed an opinion on whether things went together well. I don't know if the staff are told not to give an opinion or not, but it was like pulling teeth to get another opinion or any advice on how the fabrics I was considering would work together. Aren't they supposed to be the experts? This situation has happened each one of the several times I have been in the store. While the store is generally bright near the windows, the light over the cutting table is abysmal. Unfortunately, that's the only place in the entire store where you can lay things out and figure out what goes well together. All other shelves, tabletops and chairs are covered with merchandise. So there is actually very little space to work with in terms of spreading pieces of fabric out in an area with sufficient light to figure out if the several hundred dollars you are planning to drop there will be well spent. While the poor lighting over the only area with a table in the main part of the store, the lack of space to spread things out, and the apparent indifference of staff are three big liabilities, I rated this place four stars solely on the wide selection and quality of its fabrics and patterns. read more

I live about an hour away. I stopped when I was driving by and found great fabrics. The staff was helpful without hovering over me. They had great patterns and while a bit pricy, the one I purchased was nested, so I had three complete sets of patterns in one. I have since ordered 4 patterns directly from that company. I left with 4 great fabrics, and because the staff engaged in conversation with me about my projects, they helped me with zippers and proper thread (I picked out by colors, not for the task.) I would travel back down that far to pick up more supplies. I've tried ordering some fabrics online and am always disappointed. read more

I also found the staff to be minimally friendly and helpful, but maybe they usually deal with more experienced quilters. They didn't seem very interested in me as a beginner.
