The staff was extremely helpful, the selection and quality of items was just right, and I left feeling impressed. The first place I stopped in Durango this time around (July 2025) was the Art Supply House. And yet again, the staff (Lily and Olivia) were on it. I went in looking for one thing and left with many. Lily explained the subtle differences between two items I was interested in, and they both went above and beyond in being friendly, informative, and helpful. I will be back every time I am in Durango. Super impressed with their customer service.

It's similar to a beer keg inside of a rock which was very unique I had never seen it before and I thought was a very clever idea. The glass work was, so beautiful from wall hangings to bowls. If money was no object, I would have purchased several things. Including, the table and two chairs set was a chair it's hard to describe without seeing it was just absolutely breathtaking metal work. I highly recommend this place if you are looking for handmade, unique, and gorgeous things to decorate you or your home.

We went to the Animas Museum and had a great visit. We actually messed up and came in the back door, It is an old school house and has desks of the era, many great old photos of the town . Turns out that Animas was the towns original name. My favorite Was a list of the teachers jobs such as starting the fire. The list of punishments for various kid misdeeds is priceless, lashes were applied liberally. A very nice young man named Pablo showed us around as well as a wonderful little lady who was very helpful with the history of the building. Make sure to go it is only a five dollar donation. We learned a lot of information about turquoise. I had no idea how many different kinds of turquoise there is. My friend was looking for a matching earrings for her bracelet. Owner told us that particular turquoise is no longer mined but eventually we found some earrings that were a close match. We both purchased a couple pieces. The only criticism I have is the owner doesn't stay focused. He is very very knowledgeable all things turquoise but we didn't need to hear the history of every piece that we were not even interested in. He kept showing my friend items that she wasn't in there to look at We almost left until a pair of earrings caught my eye that I thought would match her bracelet. They were a very close match so she did make a purchase. Even though he said more than once: These earrings are expensive and I would hate for you to pay that much‍ He almost lost a $1000 sale between her and I because he was not focused and even tried to discourage the earring purchase at one point. Everyone was incredibly welcoming, genuine, and so much fun to talk to. We spent as much time laughing and chatting as we did admiring the beautiful pieces, and they made us all feel right at home. They were so kind, helpful, and generous with their time--it never felt like we were just customers walking through the door. I came expecting beautiful art, and we got more. They somehow managed to make us all feel incredibly special and happy with our purchases. My kids' high school put on Broadway level shows. First, your email confirmation said "the show is at 5 pm and the doors open at 7pm." Yup. Second, you didn't start on time. Third. Who wrote these plays, a 1st grader? I stayed for 4 of them before walking out. They were dull, uncompelling and, why would you put actors on the far left of the stage? It was a slog to look over there from the far right side of the audience seating. Total waste of money and time.

At the Durango Arts Center (DAC) you can enjoy the visual arts, theater, dance, live music, and…read moreeducation programs for children and adults. The building housing DAC, was once home to a car dealership and is right across the street from Steamworks Brewery (for other artisan pursuits). In 1997, the community collaborated to fund and renovate the 17,000-square-foot building, which is now home to a gallery, theater, arts library, studio space, and more. Unfortunately, I missed the Patsy Cline show, and limited my visit to the the downstairs art gallery and gift shop areas. I love finding these regional cooperative art centers, as there are always many interesting pieces, a diverse representation of local artists, reasonable prices, very knowledgeable and enthusiastic staff, and no tourist-related schlock. And outside of the nearby Open Shutter (Contemporary Fine Art Photography), DAC was easily the best place in Durango to go for visual gallery pleasure and the best quality for the artistic dollar. I ended up buying a nice multi-coloured piece of glass that hangs from a handsome and hefty metal pedestal. I bought it for Gayle, but coveted it myself. The DAC staff person wrapped it carefully and successfully for the long journey home. And even though our combined household is cluttered enough, there's always a place in our home for quality art such as this.
