There are so many positive things to say about this institution both academically and personally…read more The academic: I graduated from YSU in 1983. My late wife graduated in 1982. YSU offered hope for so many young people of my generation. We witnessed, first hand, the harsh reality of deindustrialization on a town dominated by a single industry. Our prospects locally were bleak, our parents were unfamiliar with the strategies required to navigate this new economic landscape, so our hopes rested on an education. YSU was our local option. Back then, it was relatively inexpensive too. Tuition was low compared to today's standards, and grants and scholarships were easy to come by. YSU was a step or two behind the computer wave, but they adapted enough to provide me with the education needed to land and hold a 38 year career with a large tech company. I did have to move to get that job, but we never lost touch with this area, the people, and YSU. Years later, we were able to move back to the area. When my wife decided to become a mental health counselor, she again turned to YSU to get her BA in Psychology. This enabled her to eventually become a School Psychologist in one of the city's high schools. Our educations paid dividends beyond our wildest expectations. We provided well for our family, my wife helped countless youth who were struggling with a difficult start in life, and it gave us the opportunity to travel and experience things that those who lived in past generations, tied to the steel mills, would have struggled to access. I believe YSU is still a great place to gain the foundation to put yourself on a path to a fulfilling life. And who knows, you just might meet that person to spend the rest of your life with. The personal: This is where my wife and I met. Inner Circle Pizza, across the street and now closed, served as the lunch spot for our earliest "dates". We started a conversation there that turned into a 38.5 year love affair and marriage. I came back on what would have been our 39th anniversary. It was 7 months since she passed. I was so happy that Cushwa Hall, Kilcawley Center, and the Maag Library were all open so I could retrace some of the most memorable steps of my long life. The campus has changed. The green spaces have filled in beautifully. The veneer on the buildings and surrounding thoroughfares has been polished, taking on the air of any other fine university town that I've visited. Like me and my late wife, the university has shaken off some of that grittiness that was endemic in this town oh so many years ago. But it hasn't lost the values that made this area such a great place in which to be rooted. I'll forever be thankful for YSU's purpose, mission, and presence in my life.

Only negative thing I have to say is when the weather is bad in the winter, I mean REALLY bad, they RARELY cancel class...even when all the local school districts are closed, you'll have to make your way through the snow/rain/ice/blizzard to school. Also, the parking situation isn't that great, but I suspect it's like that at most commuter colleges. Letter grade: B

The Weekend College (WEC) at Hiram is a fantastic program for working adults that has courses every other weekend for 7 weekends and then a 3 week session for three Saturdays in a row. They have a broad range of degree programs available for the WEC students, including the all-important business programs. The administration of the WEC is really what makes the program phenomenal. I don't feel like I'm trying to figure out a foreign language when I'm registering for classes, and the advisors ACTUALLY advise about the courses you need to take. Even better, unlike my previous college, I'm not getting assigned to a new advisor several times a semester. To be perfectly honest, on my first visit to Hiram before I had enrolled, I was in tears (of joy). No one in the university setting in administration has EVER taken the time to get to know me, much less was interested in HELPING me accomplish my educational goals. I was floored and felt at home from the first day I set foot in the WEC office. I'm an Accounting and Financial Management major, so most of my experience with the courses there are within that program. I have taken several courses outside of my major (Gen.Ed requirements) and all of them have been phenomenal. The professors are responsive and interested in furthering your career, not just teaching a class every other weekend. I have had two professors that I don't particularly care for, but everyone else seemed happy with them. The exceptionally nice part is that you're in small classes with fellow students who actually care about their education, and they are actually interested in getting to know one another. Because most of us are working adults, class discussions are actually valuable since their experiences aren't limited to frat parties and their waitressing jobs. One of the options you have as a WEC student is to stay in Gray Hall on the weekends that you're in class. This is great, especially for people like me who live 40ish miles away. I stay on Friday and Saturday nights usually (getting up at 6am on a Saturday and then driving an hour for my first class in the morning is NOT appealing). The dorms are....well, they're dorms. The beds are kinda terrible and the decor is definitely lacking, but considering that it saves me 80 miles of driving on college weekends, I'm definitely glad that it's an option. Most people in the dorm are fairly respectful of the noise level, but the traditional college students can get quite noisy. Thankfully, they tend to drop the noise level by around 11pm, so it's not too bad. Plus, a fan for 'white noise' makes sleeping through their fun easy.

If I could give this "university" 0 stars I would. The dorms are infested with rats, cockroaches,…read moreand BLACK MOLD, which is extremely carcinogenic and toxic to students' health. In almost every room, at least something is broken or doesn't work, such as broken drawers, broken AC units (where students freeze to death), and showers that don't even have hot water. The dorm manager, Robert Zielinski, does not care about students. He'll claim he'll fix the issues yet never does. His only concern is cashing in a check while he'll gladly let students suffer in miserable living conditions. He's the biggest scammer of them all!! Now onto the academic portion/curriculum. This place shouldn't even be called a university, it's a sketchy "family business" because everyone is related to each other somehow. The professors aren't even real doctors and have 0 clinical experience themselves or haven't practiced in years. HSF (a course that all students are required to take) is 4 courses in ONE! Histology, embryology, anatomy, and physiology. Not breaking these classes up into their own entity and combining them is the reason most students fail and will have to repeat the ENTIRE semester (which is the goal since this university and their staff are money hungry scammers). They are not qualified to teach, they belittle their students on a daily basis, and expect you to come to class knowing all the info , and do not teach their students. If you wanna ruin your mental health, your physical well being, and receive a poor education, then this is the perfect place for you!!!!!!!
