I scheduled an appointment and waited five months for availability with a specific doctor due to their positive reviews. I was willing to wait because I believed the quality of care would justify the delay. However, the day before my appointment the office cancelled it, even though the office was open that day, and no one contacted me to reschedule. After waiting two days without any communication, I began calling the office daily. Four days later, I finally reached someone at their scheduling call center, who informed me that my appointment had already been rescheduled without anyone contacting me to confirm whether the new date or time worked for me. Not only was the appointment moved without my consent, but they also changed the provider, despite the fact that I had specifically requested a particular doctor based on my medical needs. This lack of communication and disregard for patient preferences was extremely unprofessional. To make matters worse, the new appointment was scheduled two months after the original date, even though the cancellation was initiated by the office. Given that I had already waited five months, this level of disorganization and poor patient care is unacceptable. The overall experience reflected a very low standard of care and professionalism. When I was pregnant they wanted to see me every month at least but just trying to make an appointment for my annual exam and I'm unable to get through to a human. Sat on hold for 30 minutes and got so frustrated I hung up. They play a hold message over and over about how you can schedule your appointment via their app but when I tried that it told me it couldn't be scheduled online and I had to call. It has taken me three years to write this review. I had a miscarriage. I'm not sure what was worse, losing my baby, or being completely rejected by the medical system. My primary care physician, located in the same building as Penn Ob/Gyn confirmed my pregnancy. I made an appointment with Penn Ob/Gyn, and they took an ultrasound of my 6-week-old baby. I had a follow-up appointment lined up with them. The next day, I started bleeding and called Penn Ob/Gyn and told them what was going on. They had me get another ultrasound at another location and confirmed I was miscarrying. When I called to confirm my upcoming appointment, I was told my appointment had been canceled. I asked why and they said it was because I wasn't pregnant anymore. It had been a few days at that point, and I was still bleeding. I made another appointment, and that was canceled too. The administrator said my appointment was canceled because I wasn't pregnant. I said I understood, but the baby is still in me, so I'm not entirely "not" pregnant. Then she said they "Didn't have a code for that." I asked, "You don't have a code for a miscarriage?" I said I was still bleeding, and I wanted to be examined. They refused to see me because they didn't have a code for my "state." After a week of bleeding and being unable to find care, I started bleeding out. Thank God my husband was there to take me to the ER. It took almost 2 hours to stabilize me so I could be examined and have the baby removed from outside my cervix. It's traumatizing enough to lose a baby, but to have the healthcare system turn me away was just dehumanizing. I have, by today's standards, good health insurance through my job at Penn, yet I couldn't get care for something as common and natural as a miscarriage. It's shameful. I thank the nurse-midwives who called me off the books and said they were sorry they couldn't do more for me. Her office refused to see me and told me to go to Penn Ob/Gyn. I said they wouldn't see me because I was miscarrying and therefore, "not pregnant." Her office told me they couldn't see me either. Despite having a top-level Independence Blue Cross healthcare plan through Penn, I could not be seen. Ladies and your partners, I hope you have backup health care in case of miscarriage. My husband knew he was losing a baby, and he was terrified he was going to lose me that week, too. As a Fortune 500 company executive, he is well-spoken, resourceful, and highly skilled at bringing people together to make things work. This review is incredibly overdue. Forgive me this may be long. Over 10 years ago now, I experienced my first pregnancy and delivery at a health system in South Jersey that was both problematic and traumatic to say the least, with health complications as well as proofs of negligence, during my both prenatal and antepartum care-issues that arose typically would have had adverse outcomes to both myself and baby. Following that, I went on to search where I could receive the best gyn care going forward, reading through reviews and ratings and I found that in Penn Medicine. I was given an appointment with Dr Bavuso, who at the time was at the Woodbury Heights location. Dr. B exuded the utmost kindness, made me feel comfortable, listened to my concerns, and just exhibited the bedside manner that all physicians should. 2018 -to my surprise was pregnant and I was informed she was now in Center City at Washington Square permanently. Of course, asked to have my care transferred there. The care I received as a pregnant mother was top notch. Every precaution was taken, from tests to preventive measures. Night and day difference in care from the other health system. As someone who had a problematic first experience, naturally one would be anxiety ridden with a new pregnancy that's deemed high risk. She calmed my fears throughout, quickly responded to messages via MyPennMedicine no matter how minuscule the question might have been. I am beyond grateful that her and colleagues delivered my healthy little girl via cesarean nine months later, February 2019 2020-a second high risk pregnancy with Penn Medicine this time in midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite many new proceedings and changes, the quality of care of I was given yet again was phenomenal. I didn't feel rushed during appointments, all my needs were met. Nine months later, again she brought my healthy baby, a boy, into the world via cesarean, March 2021 Words can't express enough the gratitude I have for Dr B and her team. I trust her judgment and comfortably know that whatever she recommends is in her patients best welfare. Also, as a woman of color, I know there is a disparity in care that other women may experience in obstetric care. I can 100% say that I have never, ever experienced this as a patient that has had gynecological, obstetrical, MFM and postpartum care for a number of years here now, at Washington Square and at Pennsylvania Hospital. You are in great hands, with Penn Medicine at Washington Square, and I am so thankful to now have had two healthy pregnancies resulting in two healthy children due to the good hands we were in with the 15th floor office. read more

I had just called after being jerked around by Penn, so I was looking for a little understanding. I had made an appointment a month prior for an IUD removal from the doctor who'd been giving me regular exams. She said she could do it. The morning of the appointment (I had taken time off work for this) Penn called to tell me they couldn't perform the procedure and that I'd need to go to the OBGYN, so I called and the soonest they could see me was October. Because I hadn't gone since 2017 I was considered a new patient, despite being in the Penn system and getting regular check ups by Penn -- just not at that office (it was just more convenient since she was my regular doctor as well). While annoying, I understand every business has its protocols. The issue for me, and what is making me find another OBGYN is that when I called to make the appointment the person on the phone treated me like I was a burden for her. Or another number in the system, at best. I don't ask for much, but I do like to be treated like a person. It's a simple fix - train staff to act like they care. It would have made a huge difference after the frustrating morning I had. It's a shame because Dr. Parrott is excellent. Too bad the people answering phones really couldn't care less. read more

I had an uneventful pregnancy and experienced satisfactory care at each of my weekly appointments. Until the birth of my daughter, when there were shocking post-birth complications and I needed physical and emotional followup care the most. I ended up back in the hospital a week later and the midwife on duty was the opposite of compassionate. If you have a run of the mill pregnancy and an uncomplicated birth they are fine. The second things go south, be prepared to figure things out alone. I do appreciate the message on the portal from one of the midwives, genuinely concerned for myself and my daughter. She was not the midwife that delivered my daughter, nor was she one of the midwives that I'd seen for most weekly appointments, but the fact that she reached out and genuinely cared about my well being and my daughter eased the sting of the other apathetic midwives a bit. read more

This was by far the worst experience I have ever had at a doctors office. I went to the location on 3701 Walnut Street on the 3rd floor ste 371. Your first prenatal appointment is suppose to be a time of joy and this is by far the most traumatic experience I have ever had at a MD's office. This staff needs a COMPLETE remodel. They are rude, unprofessional, unsympathetic, and they treat their jobs just like a paycheck. The front desk staff is suppose to be first point of contact and are suppose to represent the hospital with integrity. Instead I just felt like I could of received better service at a clinic, this is how TERRIBLE this staff is. First and foremost due the COVID19 pandemic your partner/ spouse is unable to come in for even your first ultrasound, as many can understand this is very heartbreaking news. The staff continuously was rude and unsympathetic. Second, YOU WILL NOT SEE THE DOCTOR YOU SELECTED. Please tell me how this makes sense? As a first time mom I actively did my research to ensure I would receive the best care so that also entails me carefully selecting a physician that would be the best fit for me and my unborn child. Thirdly, The doctor was knowledgeable but she listens for all of 5 seconds, just quickly rammed the ultrasound into my uterus and was completely unsympathetic when telling me that i have had a miscarriage. In the same breath of just telling me I lost my child she shoves these options in my face to terminate my pregnancy and then asks me " do you know what option your leaning towards?" So now picture, I was treated terribly by the front desk staff, then terribly by the physician, was unable to have my Husband in the room with me for what we thought was going to be the first time hearing the heartbeat , then tragically being told that I miscarried while on FACETIME and my husband can do nothing as I am uncontrollably sobbing. This was my first pregnancy, my first prenatal appointment, my first ultrasound and they by far made it the most traumatic experience I have ever had. I have reached out to schedule my first OB appointment for my first pregnancy with Penn and was told I can't be seen until 10 weeks. Every other person I've spoken with and everything I've read online said the first OB appointment should be around 8 weeks. I'm wondering why one of the "best organizations" in the country, isn't standard. I even called back a few days later after my appointment was scheduled and expressed my concern and desire to be seen sooner and was told I have to wait until 10 weeks. Went for prenatal care for the name but to be honest, it's not even mediocre care they provide. My nurse would just say "oh that's normal in pregnancy and we don't exactly know why and I don't have any medications to give to you" when I spotted frequently and bled moderately a few times in the first trimester. Why do I come to hospital in the first place then? I'm seriously considering to switch the hospital because Penn really doesn't seem to care about the patients at all. Also, they always make you wait at least 30 min even if you show up before the scheduled appointment time. Really not a great experience with this place. read more

I came in for a first time appointment today and it was less than excellent. I was told to sit down and wait before I was called up to check in with the front desk (what??) and then sit back down and wait some more. 20 mins after I arrive I'm called into the back by a nurse. She proceeds to ask me all the same questions I answered in the paperwork. Then I see an NP and she tells me that they're going to do a Pap smear and remove my IUD today. For a third time she asks me all the same questions without consulting my paperwork. Why did I even bother filling it out? She's all ready to remove my IUD without seeming to have considered that I need a new form of birth control. I have to stop her and ask her what I'm going to use and she immediately writes me a prescription for something I used 5 years ago without actually asking me what I want. Then I have to spend a million hours on the phone with my insurance bc she didn't stop to check whether the kind she prescribed was covered. It was overall kind of a nightmare. read more

I've been coming to Penn Ob/Gyn for years now (not the same department as Penn Ob/Gyn and Midwifery--see the full list of Penn's gynecological-related practices here: www.pennmedicine.org/Provider-Search/Results.aspx?s=24&p=1). The main problem they have is the requirements (set by insurance companies) for the number of patients they have to schedule in a certain period of time, which creates major back-up problems and the wait is often excruciating (especially if you're trying to fit an appointment into a lunch break, etc.). However, the staff is polite, the new space at 801 Walnut Street (12th and 15th floors) is beautifully appointed (and more convenient), and I love my doctor. read more

Not one to write reviews, but after delivering two children with Dr. Salva over the last two years, I cannot help but reflect on how lucky our family is to have had her guide us and safely deliver two healthy children. Before I dive into details on Dr. Salva, because I know I was looking at all the reviews when I was researching OB/GYNs, I have to say that every doctor I have met through the 14th floor practice has been fabulous. Whenever I call or email, someone from the team gets back to me during the same business day - KNEA..thank you for always (somehow) being available to help and guide your patients to the correct resources! I truly looked forward to my visits, as even with masks, you can feel the warmth from everyone in the office, and you know you are about to be so well taken care of! I am bias to the Dr. Salva and Knea dream team, but I have met with nearly every provider over the last two years and have been impressed by each of their knowledge and patient care. I was excited to meet Dr. Salva after reading all her wonderful reviews, but my expectations were blown away from the first appointment. Since the first prenatal visit, Dr. Salva made my husband and I feel so comfortable - answering my multitude of first-time parent questions, calming my fears, and explaining every option and risk I should be prepared for. Dr. Salva took the time to get to know me, and I truly felt that she brought her heart and mind to work every day. During the birth of our first child, we had a significant scare - Dr. Salva guided her team through an expedited emergency response, and due to her expertise, we now have a healthy girl with no side effects from her birth emergency. I wholeheartedly credit Dr. Salva's immediate response and leadership for the safe arrival of our daughter. The care Dr. Salva and her team provide is unmatched. One moment that showcases the unprecedented heart Dr. Salva brings to work is when she quite literally held my hand before surgery and talked to me throughout the anesthesia process before my husband could join. As a patient, I am in awe of how much time and attention she gives, despite what I know is a wildly busy schedule. Dr. Salva has been so informed and ahead of everything pandemic related - she was a "one stop shop" for anything COVID during my second pregnancy. Not only did I feel safe at every office visit due to the high COVID precautions, but I felt like Dr. Salva was an advocate for both myself and growing child during this unprecedented time. I advise you not to go here if you are delivering your first child. The doctors and staff are all over the place (minus the front desk staff- they are very kind and have it together). My first appointment was super rushed. The doctor didn't even perform the pap smear that I was told was going to be done. I followed up to let them know this was missed and still have not heard back months later. Also tried explaining a medical condition I have to the doctor at my first appointment, however, I could tell she wasn't listening so I slowly started to cut off (she didn't even realize). Other appointments have been cold/ rushed/ and not very informational. Very hard to get the same doctor to see you more than once since they are so booked. This is an exciting and joyous time for new moms and you should feel that in the place you deliver. Patients shouldn't be taking on the stress of navigating the entire system because the doctors are missing procedures/ not communicating clearly. I thought Penn had a strong name, but sadly that strong name does not hold up within the OB/GYN department. read more

Long wait times, can't get a hold of someone to answer phone questions, etc. The team in charge of helping you get your fmla completed are incompetent or just plain lazy. Went here for 3 of my pregnancies. I had doctor elka Easter for my last pregnancy and absolutely loved her! Really down to earth chick. Never once did I feel uncomfortable around her. I was induced at 38 weeks and had a healthy baby boy. Any time a staff at Pennsylvania hospital asked who my midwife was and I replied elka they would always reply with a compliment. In agreement with the other reviewers, the general staff of receptionists is lazy and un-accomadating. When told by your doctor to make an appointment in 2 weeks, the schedulers don't really care and will happily make your appointment 4 weeks later because "that's all they have available." I have sat in the waiting room for upwards of an hour for no reason and had other people seen before me while I waited, even though my appointment was before them and I was on time. This all shows the poor communication of the office staff. The doctors and midwives are themselves rather inconsistent. They don't usually know my name or anything about my history when they come into the room, so you must explain everything over again (and again). One doctor will say one thing, and another doctor will give you a completely different response. I suggest that if they are going to have you see someone different each time, they come to agreement on certain general aspects of care and take 1 minute to review your file before walking into the room. Wow. My experience here was completely different than the other reviewers! First of all, did you know midwives see non-pregnant ladies for regular gyne exams?! I didn't, but I do now! Best of both worlds! I ADORE my midwife, Nancy Hazle. She spent a lot of time just talking to me, getting my history, both medical & personal. I didn't feel rushed at all. And instead of judging me or scoffing at my use of an acupuncturist & a naturopath, she encouraged me to continue seeing both of them. She ordered a lot of tests & was really focused on helping me figure out what's wrong with me & figuring out solutions that work for me. The office staff was also super nice to me (I often wonder at the behavior of people who rant & rave about nasty customer service at places...how THEY acted towards the people they're ranting about...do unto others, ya know?) and I didn't have to wait all that long. When I called for test results today, one sentence uttered by the nurse who called me back lost them a star. One sentence. "Your chart is a disaster!!" Um. I'm calling for serious test results & THAT'S what you said to me?! What. The. Hell. Apparently, she meant it was disorganized (again, what the hell?!), but still. (For the record, all of my tests came back negative...which is, of course, positive.) I definitely recommend, & definitely will be back again...but hopefully, just once a year. read more

First off this is a huge practice. I swear half the city of Philadelphia goes here. The midwives and OBs are fantastic. There are definitely some I like better than others, but for the most part I've been very happy with the care I've received. When my daughter was born there were some complications, but I felt informed and respected the whole time. Unfortunately, getting care can be like pulling teeth. The office is ALWAYS running an hour behind, even first thing in the morning. Actually getting anyone on the phone is an exercise in patience (and calling repeatedly over a course of days). No one in the office has any idea what any other part of the office is doing. The surgical scheduler is so hard to get in touch with that I seriously contemplated whether it was easier to just miscarry at home rather than have to interact with her again to schedule the D&C. I don't know what, if anything, can be done about the miserable office situation. The OBs seem pretty powerless to do much about it, but I might try to take it up with the patient advocate at the hospital. Right now I view the office as a flaming wall I have to climb in order to see the doctors I've come to trust. But if you've got a strong stomach for bureaucracy, the doctors and midwives are great. read more

BUYER (Patient) BEWARE!!! I thought I had a great experience with this practice - they were both professional and courteous, until I received my bill. After trying my best to do due diligence to get procedure codes and information based on my insurance, I was STILL BILLED almost $200 for something that I was told was zero charge, by both their office and my insurance company. I even asked for this in writing, but they assured me that it was of zero cost. I just got off the phone with an office billing representative and she told me that I was given codes based on what they know, but there was still an "unknown" element because the doctor can bill you for whatever he or she wants. Seriously?! This was ELECTIVE and I elected for it because I thought it was preventive and covered 100%. I feel like I just took my car to a shady mechanic and had work done that I was not quoted for, except it was my BODY. Unreal and sad. Never again. As a side note, I work in Marketing and rarely take to Yelp to express my displeasure but I called them and gave them the opportunity to fix things and make it right, and they could literally not care any less. I've been calling everyday for a week for a prescription renewal. The pharmacy even faxed paperwork so all that was needed was a signature. Still no prescription. I called again today and spoke with staff (working from home). Her child was screaming into the phone the ENTIRE time. When I asked if I should call someone else or call back, she gave me attitude! Almost at the 3 year mark fighting an annual exam bill that was coded wrong and I was charged hundreds of dollars for. Thinking it was over for a long time now and getting a collection letter was a surprise since I haven't heard from them in ages. Now their billing department telling me I need to contact them and have them resubmit a claim 3 years later? Heh? They just run you around until you get tired of fighting. Very sad. I have seen almost every midwife at the practice, and each has been as caring, patient, and warm as the one before. I've (purposefully) never seen a doctor because the midwifery care is so consistent and positive. When I was admitted to the hospital for the birth of my first child, and nothing went as planned, Vicki say with me and my husband for hours and even stayed with me in surgery until the anesthesia kicked-in. I wish I could be more upbeat about the front-office staff. In person, all of my experiences have been great. However, the phone skills need some work. read more

I was unable to schedule an appointment here. I'm writing this review to hopefully save other women the time and energy wasted in trying to do so, especially if they are going for more than a routine annual visit. I have some pelvic pain so I wanted a gynecologist to check it out. I called here the first time in June. I was put on a waiting list and told a scheduler would call me back when there was an opening, which would possibly be as late as September but I could call and check if there were openings prior to that. So I've been calling biweekly to see if any appointments had opened up... and today was told that, maybe by late February, they could see me. That's crazy! I wouldn't recommend wasting your time expecting to be able to be seen here. Definitely call elsewhere, ESPECIALLY if you have a health problem! read more

I had a positive experience here throughout my pregnancy. I never had any problems making appointments. When I called to make an appointment, sometimes I would be on hold for quite some time, but someone always picked up and I was usually able to make an appointment at my preferred date/time or close to it. Making follow up appointments in the office was easy at checkout. Toward the end of the pregnancy, I was able to make multiple future apportionment at once. Wait times in the office varied, but most of the time I was seen in 15 minutes or less. Only had a few times (less than a handful) that were long wait times. I didn't always see the same provider, but everyone I saw was really knowledgeable and nice. They always took time to answer my questions or explain next steps to me. They always made sure to ask me about symptoms I was feeling and educated me throughout my pregnancy. They also gave me helpful literature or websites to go to. Overall, I had a good experience here, would return for future pregnancies, and would recommend them to others. read more

Agree with most reviews - the midwives a WONDERFUL, the front desk staff are... frustrating. I received prenatal care here for my first pregnancy and delivered with Maria at Pennsy. I am now pregnant with my 2nd and returning to the midwives. I really can't complain about anything about my entire prenatal/birth experience except for the difficulty of dealing with the receptionists. Nothing TERRIBLE, just always seemed impatient, never in a hurry and NEVER smiling (at least at patients, they always seem to be having fun with each other). I guess those are just "above and beyond" expectations that are worth putting up with for the excellent care of the midwives. I've seen most all of them and they were all great! I would encourage seeing as many as possible before birth since you never know who will be at the hospital when it's baby time. read more

Constantly being put on hold, their receptionists drop call and then I am required to wait 30 more minutes on hold. It took them a month to get in contact with my insurance about coverage for a procedure. Dr. DeSouza-Sanders is great but Penn's office staff and receptionists are absolutely terrible. These people are terrible. I am usually not the type of person to simply dismiss an entire organization out of hand, but this place...is hell. First, when my insurance expired unbeknownst to me, they refused to honor my appointment time. In fact, I had to sit in the office of the office manager, a horrendous woman named Regina, as she told me that they refused to honor my appointment time until I had health insurance, and wouldn't work out a payment plan in the meantime. I offered to pay cash out of pocket and offered a sum I could afford, and she actually SCOFFED at me. Like most people, setting up doctors' appointments is something we have to do months in advance to plan around work and etc. So, having my appointment not honored was not only a huge waste of time, but I also lost wages due to taking the day off for this appointment. Additionally, I had received a diagnosis for Pelvic Inflammatory Disease from a critical care doctor not at Penn, and my GP at Penn advised me to seek follow up treatment on PID. At Penn Ob/Gyn, the doctors refused to do a physical examination, again, wasting my time. It's possible that I still have PID but I DON'T KNOW BECAUSE THE DOCTORS REFUSED TO DO THEIR JOB, IE PERFORM A BRIEF PHYSICAL INSPECTION. These people are monstrous. Avoid at all costs. read more

After 4 years with Dr. Robison, I'm done. She's a kind woman, but on my last visit she realized (after I questioned her) that I didn't need the procedure I had been scheduled for. Here's what happened: I had an annual and afterwards got a call from a nurse to schedule a follow up procedure. The nurse left a message on my phone and didn't elaborate because of HIPPA laws, which is fine. I called back, and left a message asking to have a nurse call me back to explain what was going on (because at this point I'm assuming I have cancer and am freaking out). The call back never comes, but I was scheduled just a few weeks from my original visit so I decided to wait and talk to the doctor herself. An hour and a half after my scheduled appt, Dr. Robinson comes strolling in ready to operate (outpatient procedure but still considered an operation). I ask her to go over exactly what's going on, why she recommended this procedure, etc. She reviews my chart - apparently for the first time - and basically says "Oh, whoops, you don't need this. Not sure why they scheduled it. Sorry! Have a good day!" Thank GOD I questioned her. She was ready to dive right in! I was hoping the widwifes would be positive, informative and empowering but instead found them to be condescending, awkward, and honestly pretty useless. I felt like I was learning nothing and my appointments always left me in tears. If you have Health Partners and think Penn is your only option for midwife care, it's not!! You can request to switch to Keystone first and then use the birthing center in bryn mawr! So happy to have found them. read more

Great Doctors but the Staff is worthless. They have awful phone manners and aren't caring at all. Also, expect to wait for your Doctor for at least an hour. They're always running late and instead of checking you in, the staff is normally gossiping and goofing around. I've never gone there and was able to go in for my appointment and see a doctor without spending 3 hours there. I really did like the Doctors, but when I became pregnant I've opted for another doctor. I would suggest the same for other Philly ladies. read more

Pros: Great View, New Office Cons: *Always* behind schedule (no acknowledgement) I've been seeing Dr. Mehta for about 5 years now and have followed them from their offices in the Curtis Center to the new high rise on 8th. Dr. Mehta is great but the office staff and administration processes leave much to be desired. A poster below summed it up saying " The office is ALWAYS running an hour behind, even first thing in the morning. Actually getting anyone on the phone is an exercise in patience (and calling repeatedly over a course of days). No one in the office has any idea what any other part of the office is doing." As long as I've been going to Penn Ob/Gyn + Midwifery Care I've experienced the same, regardless of checkup time (They could learn a LOT from the prompt + organized departments on the 17th floor, sending timely reminders and electronic satisfaction surveys). In addition to the office always unapologetically running behind, 2011-14 I never received any reminders to schedule an annual exam, electronic, paper, or otherwise, even after repeatedly filling out one of those postcards with my address. This year I did receive a letter dated 2/17 to remind me my annual visit was due on 2/14. Yes, that is right, a reminder sent after my annual passed. Strangely they have a new form requiring you to state if you are there for an annual visit or if you have any additional questions for the doctor to answer. If you choose option 2, it is stated you will be billed a copay. So apparently, if I have any OBGYN questions for my doctor I'll now be billed as something other than the annual exam and will now have to pay for what should be a fully insured visit. This definitely strikes me as sketchy and another example of offices trying to bleed as much $ as they can from insurance providers and does not sit well with me. They do not explain the form and when I asked about it the staff actually just recommended I check #2 'In case I had questions' - so you can charge me? No thanks! And lastly, the office staff at the front are unhelpful and straight up rude, ignoring you while they finish their private conversations among eachother and feigning ignorance when you pass along a request verbatim as advised by another staff member. Very difficult to deal with or interact with, total polar opposite of the ease that Delancy Internal (Penn) Medicine up on 17 displays. Hard to believe both operate under Penn Medicine. read more

I just wanted to comment on the 11/7/2013 post from Michele R. I have nothing to say against her feedback other than that she is not posting about the correct practice. Dr. Desouza-Sanders and the Pen Ob/Gyn practice on the 12th floor is not the same practice as this yelp entry for "Penn Ob/Gyn and Midwifery Care." This practice is in the same building on the 14th floor and Dr. Desouza-Sanders and their reception staff are different. Pros: Location, good receptionists, Penn is a good hospital. Cons: The actual midwives. They market themselves as supportive and nurturing, and in support of empowering women to make their own choices, including low intervention. In reality, they are a just cost-saving solution for the hospital. Once you are delivering, they rush you along, try to stress you out, and push unnecessary interventions on you because they want things to go faster. It is not a healthy environment or approach to birthing. Especially terrible, Victoria Ferguson and Nancy Hazle. A couple of the others might be better, but you don't choose who is there when you deliver, so if you want to be treated with respect on the day of delivery, steer clear from this practice. Pre-natal care was fine, and uneventful. I had a healthy pregnancy. Then, during my (healthy, uncomplicated) labor, Victoria kept angrily pacing in and out and telling me I was taking too long, yelling at me that the doctor won't be happy when he hears this baby isn't out yet, and telling me I better take Pitocin or the doctor will cut me. I did not take Pitocin, I did not get cut, I minded my business and had my (second) perfectly healthy baby with only a minor tear. But I did this through the nonstop aggressive and unprofessional behavior of a midwife who only cares about churning births out quickly for her doctor boss. I am in the medical field, so I knew my rights, as well as what was necessary and what was not. I could understand that her threats had no ground in true medical risk. Most patients do not have such a luxury, and I imagine would end up with an experience that leaves them with regret and more damage than necessary. My baby was big and healthy and latched on right away. Victoria told a nurse to go get formula ready. I reminded her that I would be breastfeeding, and they tried to convince me that I "would not make enough" and "it's only colostrum." They tried to discourage me from planning to breastfeed exclusively. I insisted that I would, and this was my second baby. Victoria rolled her eyes and huffed away, making some comment about "let her do whatever she wants." This is not what I expected from a practice that says they support breastfeeding. If you have done any preparation, you know this is nonsense. Colostrum is exactly what a newborn needs, and most women do make enough. All women should have the chance to try. I have been nursing my baby for over a year now, first 6 months exclusively, and she has not had a drop of formula. I have no problem with formula, but they should not have tried to discourage my breastfeeding plans. Then while I was recovering and happy with my baby and family around me, Nancy came to visit. I thought she was coming to check on me, but she asked my family to step out. Then she lectured me about how I had caused Victoria stress by not listening to her, and that the doctor had gotten mad at Victoria that I had not delivered quicker. I was in disbelief at this unprofessional intrusion. I do not need to hear about the politics and relationship between the midwife and her boss. My baby is healthy. I am healthy. Nothing else is my concern. I believe birth practice should be driven by medical needs, not the schedule of the boss. I was so fed up with them, that I did not even go there for my 6 week post partum checkup. I drove all the way up to New York and had my old OB do my checkup. To compare, I delivered my first baby with an OB practice (doctors, not midwives), who said they supported natural birth. Even though I had some complications, they were supportive and calming the whole time, and I knew that my and my baby's interests were top priority. In this case, things actually did take a very long time, and every time I was scared about that, the OB held my hand and told me everything was going to be fine. I trusted them completely, and when intervention was necessary, I knew that they had our best interest at heart, not a schedule or their wallets. So if you are looking to be respected while you deliver your baby, and if you are looking to have you and your baby's health put first, find a different practice. You will not get that here. read more

The midwives at this practice are absolutely amazing. I have seen a handful of them throughout my pregnancy and each experience was great. Obtaining and appointment was not difficult, wait time was reasonable- usually less than 20 minutes, and the rest of the staff were very friendly. Being that it was my first pregnancy, I was a little nervous and didn't know if some of the symptoms I experienced were normal. The ease of the online patient access portal was great- you typed in your question/concern and would receive a response or call less than a couple of hours! Extremely convenient! I am a FTM and delivered my daughter at Pennsylvania in December. I really wanted to have a natural (no pain meds) birth and had a couple of birth wishes. Unfortunately, things did not go as planned and I had to get induced with pitocin. After 23 hrs of labor, there were a few minor obstacles that prevented me from carrying out my other birth wishes. Maria Bizzo was my midwife the day I delivered and she was absolutely WONDERFUL! She really cared about making this experience a good one and went above and beyond to make sure I was able to carry out at least one of the birth wishes. I am so happy with my delivery and would recommend the midwives to anyone who is searching for excellent, compassionate care! read more

This practice has moved to 801 walnut st, 12th floor. I was seeing dr. Desouza-sanders for my first visit with this practice after learning the highly sought Dr. Kolecki wasn't accepting new patients. I arrived 10 minutes early for my appt and checked in, signed the paper and handed it over to the receptionist. After 15 minutes I should've known something was wrong since I wasn't given new patient paper work to fill out. I figured my info was in the system from a network visit at the hospital 6 months prior. Nope. She just plain forgot to check me into the system. I watched women get called back after arriving long after me but figured with all the doctors in the practice that was irrelevant. I sat for 45 minutes and was going to give it 5 more before I said something when another receptionist ask me if I was seeing a doctor. "I hope so!" she set me up with paperwork and apologized for the wait, but I had already worked up a good half hour of impatience. I finally got in to see the doc at 2:55. She wasn't all smiles or anything and didn't apologize for the mistake until the end of the appointment but overall I found her to be pleasant enough. More importantly, she listened to my issues, asked appropriate questions and led me down the problem solving path without being patronizing. I will chalk the check in mix-up up to "shit happens" and say that the new environment may be what the staff needed to cheer up a bit. I wouldn't say anyone was rude or unpleasant as other reviewers have mentioned in the past. But if it happens again, well, I will amend this review and also my choice in practice! read more

Went into this location with my wife and the doctor was running "45 minutes behind schedule", which actually turned into a hour+ wait. Because this location has no parking you have to fight for a spot in the area (that only last 2 hours) OR pay an arm and a leg to park in a garage. Well, because the doctor was 2 hours behind I had to go move the car and ended up missing the appointment altogether!!! I also took a half day at work to be there with my wife and that was completely for nothing since I didn't even get to meet the doctor or attend the appt. I know that on occasion doctor's are running behind, but this is not the first hour+ wait in their waiting room. In fact, they screwed up my wife's previous three appointments. The first 2 they didn't record in their schedule at all, even though my wife made the appt. with them face to face and they asked us to reschedule the last appt. They really do not have their sh!t together. My wife is pleased with her doctor in general so of course we won't switch practices considering she is 6+ months pregnant, but for new patients I would think twice about dealing with these folks. In my opinion the run-around you have to go through is completely unacceptable and they certainly have a dusting of incompetence if not full blown incompetence. Find a better practice. read more

I really loved my experience with the Midwives. I had my 2nd child with them and it was a natural birth and I felt supported every step of the way by each and every one of the women and I think I saw them all. I agree with some of the reviews about the receptionists being very busy but I always found them pleasant when I was in the office. I had previously been a patient of the Midwives associated with St Lukes Hospital and Dr. Moritz and I loved them as well but I enjoyed birthing at Penn because the facilities were more private and seem readily available. I'm going to keep getting OBGYN services with the Midwives because they are capable and kind and I feel very comfortable going there. read more

I have been seeing Dr. Mehta for over 4-5 years even at their old location. I like her very much and have recommended her to many friends. She is great! Since their move to the Curtis Building, my experiences with the front desk employees have been spotty to almost unrelational. The last time, I waited for an hour to be seen. Was there even an apology or even an explanation of what was going on? None. Dr. Mehta did apologize & I willingly accepted. Since I am in the health services as well, I totally understand emergencies. This time, on a rainy day, I was running 10 minutes behind. By the time the receptionist saw me, one was chatting on the phone & the other chatting at the back, 17 minutes had passed my appointment.. She tells me that the doctor cannot see me since they don't have a late policy. Excuse me?!? I was 10 minutes late & by the time she saw me it was now 17 minutes late. Anyway, I didn't want my anger to get a hold of me. Instead, I'm just warning anyone who may seek services from this practice, that the front desk employees are terrible.
