The gentleman was very kind and respectful, noticing that it was an old watch that had a lot of sentimental value for my mom and advised that he would be able to fix it in a couple of hours. His remarks with the calm demeanor, along with all of the antique clocks in the shop made me and my mom feel comfortable leaving the watch with him without any concerns. When we went back to pick it up, it was repaired and set to the right time that made my mom so happy. He is not sure that even after eight months he will be accepting further work. He had no recommendation for another place that could assist me. Had to get my Timex watch battery replaced. The guy inside was very nice and polite. I did call him in advance too and he picked up the phone promptly and gave direction. Was very clear about the time it would take (30 minutes) since another customer had a watch that needed fixing before me. It was very on time and overall, a pleasant experience. I brought an antique clock for service and was first given a run-around involving ordering parts online myself and then making an extra trip back to this shop. The owner then told me he was unwilling to repair the clock at this time. I told him I'm happy to wait the 6-8 months that he quoted me, but he then declined my request to be placed on a waiting list. So I asked if there is anyone else he recommends in this community and he declined to provide any other names, saying no one but him could perform the service. A rather unsatisfactory experience. Sadly, you don't see many establishments such as this these days. A clock shop, stocked full with time pieces of all types. Antique, modern, to Felix The Cat. Some had animated faces.... where the physical face of the clock slowly separates, then slowly turns then comes back together as if it were somehow alive. They have the old 1960's style alarm clocks with the little hammer. As well as clocks that are much much older. I have always wanted a Cuckoo-clock I still do! They have them here. They also have the very elegant Grandfather Clocks of different sizes. Just gazing at one you feel like you have been transported back in time. There is wall to wall history here. The proprietor was very helpful. and does not try to sell you anything... he ask what type of clock are you looking for...then shows you samples. Yes they will change your watch battery here. Came in here on Saturday at 4:30 to get a watch battery changed, the guy said they had the battery and could do it, but since they close at 5, I would have to either leave it for them or come back on Tuesday. Meanwhile, it seemed like the other guy working there was giving another customer a tour of all the cool cuckoo clocks. Found another jewelry store (Henry's Jewelry in Millbrae) that was open on Sunday and replaced the battery for $8 in literally 5 minutes. It's clear from this experience and previous reviews that the Peninsula Clock Shop guys just didn't want to be bothered. Don't worry guys, won't be back. read more

I took our cuckoo clock in a couple of months ago and it needed a full rebuild. This was a diagnosis that was disappointing but not shocking since it had never been cleaned or serviced since my wife bought it about forty years ago when she traveled through Germany after HS graduation. Keith was clear that the expense was close to the value of the clock, however considering the history and emotional attachment it was a pretty easy decision. If you can be patient through the process, Keith and his tech will get it done and you'll have a functioning timepiece again. I'm giving four stars only because my experience lacked a little bit of follow up on their side but they ultimately did a great job and at their estimated price. read more

Right after I left the shop I was going to come on here and slam these guys with a one-star review and a nasty message. But then a voice from deep within awakened and slapped me across the face. I decided to collect my thoughts overnight. A night turned into a week - and during that week my thoughts were shaped by an unexpected source. Oh ya, so here's what happened: I paid $10 for these guys to put the backing of my watch back on. That's it. That's the subject of this story in it's absolute, minimal form, no more, no less. The supporting context is that I had tried to replace the battery of my Mondaine (quartz) watch. I successfully took the back of the watch off, replaced the battery with an appropriate new one, and then failed to get the backing back on. At this point I had two options to get the watch backing on, get a specific tool available on amazon prime for ~$35, or bring it to a local shop. I opted for the latter. I had passed this store dozens of times driving down El Camino over the last three years or so, deriding that strip as a weird cornucopia of shit-hole storefronts. I needed them now and so I stuffed my watch and my hypocrisy into my pockets and motored down El Camino to the Peninsula Clock Shop. I walked in and was met promptly by the proprietor who looked at me like my very presence offended the analog nature of his shop. Like my digital lifestyle would melt his store into some real life Dali-esque tragedy. Can't a millenial wear a watch without an excuse? Anyway, I explained the service that I was hoping he would provide. And he obliged, but not before explaining it would cost "TEN DOLLARS". I repeated it, "TEN DOLLARS". I stared at him, and he stared at me, and I stared at him, and he stared at me. I was so close to getting this watch fixed, but it would eat up the entire margin I had saved by changing my own watch battery. And what about the principle of it? I mean, I whole heartedly expected him to do me solid, fix it for free, extend some goodwill so that I come back with a bigger project or service request and spend some real money at the shop. But then again, this is the place I passed in the car, gawking incredulously that the shop could still afford to operate in a high cost area like Silicon Valley. Maybe this is how they do it: by not offering any handouts - no free rides. I almost respect it. And that brings us to some basics of Pricing that they are doing right. My co-worker explained this week that two basic properties of a viable Pricing model: 1. The price for the customer has to be justified by the value of the service or product. 2. The price must also leave enough margin for the provider to keep doing it. It must be profitable. Selling high margin services is certainly one way to get there, and that's exactly what Peninsula Clock shop did. They caught me with my pants down, willing to pay $10 to put the backing of my watch back on. It's fair economics, I just happened to be on the losing side. Now whether that's profitable enough for them to stay in business, we'll just have to wait and find out... read more

Keith was kind enough to give me information on taking care of my Seiko mechanical watch. He advised me to go online and purchase a watch winder box. Honest, truthful, affordable, and the best customer service! I have an older clock that fell off the wall and cracked. I brought it in to get a quote for repairs and because of the many moving and musical parts of this particular clock the amount of time and money to repair it would cost me more than purchasing an entire new clock. General Impression: I simply do not trust the watchmaker enough to do business with him. If one were to use his services, I highly recommend researching basics of watchmaking and ask the watchmaker many questions about his knowledge of the watch/clock and his qualifications as a watchmaker. My Experience: I stopped by Peninsula Clock Shop to take a look at their selection of vintage pocket watches. They had a small selection of four watches, but I was particularly interested in a circa 1920's Waltham pocket watch. I asked the watchmaker for basic information on the watch, like what model and grade the movement was, how many jewels it had, if it had adjustments, and the date of the movement and possibly, if he knew, of the case. He could not answer these questions. The only thing he said was that it was old, 7 jewels, and that it had been completely serviced. I had to ask if he would remove the rear cover so that we could answer my questions by looking at the movement and looking up the serial number, and he proceeded to have issues trying to pry open the back with his fingernail only to eventually realize it had a screw-off closure. At this point, I told him no thank you and left. If a person who only has four pocket watches and who supposedly fully serviced them cannot answer basic information about the watch, whether from memory or from a written documentation, and if that person cannot immediately tell the difference between a threaded and a snap-off/hinged case, I will not trust his abilities as a watchmaker--certainly not with older mechanical watches. read more

I was extremely disappointed by their service. I had a pretty simple wall clock that I wanted converted from plugin to battery powered. The man there took a look at me and I could tell before I even finished making my request that he was going to turn me away (even though it was not easy for me to get there with my little baby) He humored me by looking at the back of the clock for a couple seconds and then said "No, it'll be too hard to do". I left very disappointed. I put the clock up with the dangerous cord in my baby's room for a while before I decided to do it myself before he starts crawling and pulling on cords. So, happy to say, it was not "too hard to do" like he said. I went online and found a clock kit and hands that closely matched what was there before and did it myself and it took about an hour. I am no professional and had no experience and I was able to do it. This guy had no interest in saving my clock or being professional. read more

I don't know. I think that they ought to work on their communication/listening skills, particularly on the services side of the business. I came in and didn't feel like they listened to what I wanted, then when I returned to pick everything up - realized that they didn't hear what I wanted and had to show them one more time. Even then, it wasn't perfect - but good enough that I knew I could take it all the way later at home with my tool kit. So the low rating is for the total lack of active listening skills. In my experience, service shops that haven't this one attribute, usually are the ones to avoid. read more
