It's a terminus of the South East Main Line from London, and of the Dover Branch of the Chatham Main Line - so as well as services to London St Pancras, Victoria and Charing Cross, it's well connected with the rest of Kent. First opened as a temporary station in 1861, today it's very much a permanent one and has a striking whitewashed facade that dates back to a modernization project in 1932. The station is just west of the town centre, with the shops around Biggin street a five-minute walk away. At the end of Biggin Street, you'll find the Grade 2 listed St Mary's Church, with the pleasant Pencester Gardens behind it. Keep heading south and you'll come to the waterfront, with Dover Marina to your right and the busy ferry terminal to your left.

The first line opened in 1844 from London via Redhill terminated at a point at the foot of Shakespeare Cliffs, extended to the Admiralty Pier in 1860. This line was extended to a new station, Dover Marine, opened in 1921 (later renamed Dover Western Docks). Meanwhile, the London Chatham and Dover Railway had opened its line from the north, with a station at Dover Priory in 1861. This line was extended under the cliffs to the harbour later the same year, appropriately called Dover Harbour, and also extended to the Admiralty Pier station in 1864 and Dover Marine in 1921. Unsurprisingly, rationalisation was needed, with the closure of Admiralty Station when services were diverted to Dover Marine; Dover Town in 1914; Dover Harbour in 1927; and Dover Marine in 1994 (with the onset of services via the Channel Tunnel). Dover Harbour's station buildings can still be seen next to Limekiln Roundabout on the A20, and Dover Marine is now a cruise-liner terminal. This has left Dover Priory as the town's only station. The current main building was built by the Southern Railway in a modernist style in 1932. The station forecourt is currently undergoing a substantial refurbishment. The station has three platforms. Services The stations has two trains per hour to London Charing Cross via Sevenoaks; two trains per hour to London Victoria via Canterbury East and Chatham, and an hourly service to Ramsgate via Deal. Since December 2009, the station has also benefited from the new high-speed 140mph (225kph) service to London St Pancras via Ashford and the high-speed line used by Eurostar trains. Facilities As well as a ticket office and waiting area, there is a cash-machine, taxi rank, a small car park, and cycle storage. There is level access (via lifts) to all platforms.

Looking for an economical stay while in Dover? This fits the bill…read more We stayed here before boarding a cruise out of Dover and we were very happy with our stay. We received instructions for entry which was pretty easy. We got right in our room without any check-in process. We never saw anyone onsite, so it's more of a do-it-yourself stay. Our room was clean, spacious enough for our luggage, etc. Rooms had a mini fridge and coffee/tea options. Our room had a small attached bathroom, which worked out fine. We purchased breakfast options at a nearby grocery and used the common kitchen to warm up our breakfast (a delicious quiche btw) to go with our coffee. The kitchen had everything we needed. We'd stay again. It's very close to the train station, on the main road into town. It worked out well for us!

We arrived a bit earlier than check-in time (wanted to drop-off bags) and no one answered. Luckily, while we were discussing our next steps on the street, the owner came out (turns out she hadn't heard us as she was cleaning). However, it's best to let them know! Also, they don't have facilities other than in your room (so if you come early, you will have to look for loos elsewhere if your room is not ready).

Gary was fantastic and so professional. He met us at the cruse port as soon as we got off the ship. We talked and ask what we wanted to see. He showed us all over Dover in places where bus can't go. He took us to the tops and bottom of the white cliffs. He also took us to the light houses and his favorite pub for lunch. We so much enjoyed ourselves with Gary. We would highly recommend him for any of your tour needs.

After a lot of research, we contacted Horizon, which exceeded all our expectations. Communication was excellent from start to finish: Gary clearly cared about what we wanted to see and do, and after a flurry of emails we decided to book a day tour of Leeds Castle, Canterbury, and Dover Castle. Great decision! From the time he picked us up at our hotel until he dropped us off in the evening, we had a great time. Gary is very thoughtful as well as very knowledgeable about the history and culture of each area we visited. He made sure we were comfortable, stopped as needed, and were well hydrated and fed. He brought each place to life. Unlike other tours, where our primary guide dropped us off at stops where there was a required resident guide or docent, Gary stayed with us, guiding us to the best places to stand and providing extra information where needed. He made sure the tour and sights were at our pace and that we saw everything we hoped to see. Absolutely excellent. Horizon also does airport transfers and collects people from cruise boats for tours. I recommend this company highly; we could not have had a better time.

We contacted Karen at Whitfield Cars in Dover about doing a 3-hour private tour of the area prior to boarding our ship. Karen provided reasonable rates, was very helpful, answered all my questions and we arranged for Mick to pick the 4 of us up at the train station. The tour was exceptional and very informative at which point we were dropped off directly in front of the main door to board the ship. Mick was born in the Dover area and is extremely personable, providing a tour of primary areas with a strong knowledge of the history and key historical sites. I would highly recommend Whitfield Cars for their professionalism, booking process and highly enjoyable and informative tour. It was such a great start to our transatlantic journey!
