Warning: Gross Administrative Failure and Lack of Client Communication…read more Our family retained Ed Shaw Law to represent my minor children in an Order for Protection (OFP) matter regarding documented severe abuse. We successfully won an appeal at the Minnesota Court of Appeals, and the matter was officially remanded back to Crow Wing County for a critical evidentiary hearing. Prior to the hearing, our primary trial attorney relocated out of state, assuming the firm would handle the internal file transfer and assign an active firm attorney to track the remand. Because Ed Shaw Law failed to file a formal withdrawal or substitution of counsel with the court system, they legally remained active counsel of record. Crow Wing County Court Administration properly routed the official court scheduling notice to Ed Shaw Law. However, the firm had completely deactivated the internal email access for our previous attorney without updating the court system or assigning an active replacement lawyer to monitor the file. They failed to check the court docket, failed to appear in court, and completely failed to notify me that a hearing date had even been issued. As a direct result of this complete administrative abandonment and failure to communicate, no one appeared at the hearing. The Crow Wing County judge procedurally dismissed my children's protection case. I only discovered this catastrophic failure when I personally came to the courthouse weeks later to investigate the status of the case. When I addressed this with the office, they denied responsibility and refused to take any corrective action to fix the dismissed hearing unless I paid them a new retainer fee. I cannot recommend a firm that demonstrates this level of internal negligence and fails to communicate critical court dates, leaving minor children entirely unprotected. I have filed formal complaints with the Minnesota Office of Lawyers Professional Responsibility.
