We wanted to have lunch but hadn't really seen anything and so we decided to head to Bakewell (about 20 minutes drive) when I noticed a classy, inviting, purple sign by the road "The Orangery". We quickly turned around and are so glad that we did! We had a really GREAT lunch and have already booked again for Christmas Eve when our daughter and new husband visit. It may sound odd but it used to be part of a very prestigious school for over a century - the most famous "Old Girl" was Richmal Crompton who wrote all the "William" books that I devoured as a kid. Now the whole complex is basically a old peoples home (Man are they lucky!!). So the lunchgoers were, on average, grey haired (but I am going that way too) - but it was fairly quiet in terms of lunchgoers and music (just the right volume - Christmas songs, Wham and many many more of the favorites. The restaurant drips class, the bistro also (full bar). A wide selection of offerings _ I seriously wanted the prawn curry but got lured into a Christmas special. As I go there as my regular outlet, I have spoken to many customers and observed as the staff cater to everyones needs, be it coeliacs, vegetarians and even vegans. The food has fantastic presentation and such high standards are kept even when very busy. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. All food is freshly made (and you can tell) and the coffees are exceptional, freshly ground, and prepared to your order. The staff are keen to help with any special requests or dietary requirements and will cater to your needs and substitute any dislikes in order to make you entirely satisfied with your meal, beverage and overall experience. The cakes on display looked so inviting and its the first time I've seen cornflake cake since I was at school! As it was breakfast time though, we confined our menu choices the wide variety of breakfasts on offer, from toast to the requisite Full English. We plumped for scrambled eggs and poached eggs on toast, well presented and freshly cooked, but just a little under-seasoned. It didn't really matter overly though, listening to the radio, in comfortable surroundings, revelling in the fact that we were on holiday, more than made up for it. The menu for the rest of the day was equally tempting with fresh sandwiches, hot meals etc. Pity we never got the chance to return, I'm sure we will in the future.
