It's that time of year again, fellow Australians. You know the game. Sweat out your job until they…read moregive you leave, then rush to the beach or the local swimming centre. Foreigners! How are you liking the sun? It's tough, no? Well, that's okay. Come to Burnside. You'd be hard pressed to find a more beautiful swimming centre. It's outdoors, so you might not be able to get as far away from the sun as you might like. In fact, that's my biggest complaint about the place: there's very little shade. The burns you get from the sun's reflect off the water are just as bad as those you get from direct sun exposure. But so long as you wear a healthy dose of sunscreen, you'll be free to enjoy this pocket of paradise to its fullest. Although, be warned, kiddies: as I left, I witnessed a teenage very obviously urinate in the toddlers pool before he left the centre. He was walking determinedly for the exit before squatting down, sitting with a look of simultaneous pleasure and exertion for some moments, and getting back up again to leave with his parents. Eww.

As far as public swimming pools go these are quite nice. I generally prefer to swim in the ocean,…read morebut for a few laps or a quick paddle, the Burnside Swimming Centre will do the trick. Situated amongst the lush environment of Hazelwood Park, the Burnside Swimming Centre offers a main pool, divided into sections for lap and free swimming, as well as a toddlers and learners pools, both of which are covered with shade cloth for sun protection, and a spa/steamroom. There is a kiosk, as well as a store selling swimming supplies. The main pool is right in the sun, so don't forget to slip slop slap.

The Norwood Swimming Pool is a fun little place…read more It consists of an outdoor 50m lap pool along with a smaller kiddies pool which is covered with shade cloth. As is the usual practice with these sorts of places, the lap pool has an area cautioned off for actual lap swimming, (although in all likelyhood you'll get stuck behind some granny if you actually try and swim laps) and an area for free swimming. The main attraction of the Norwood Swimming pool, or at least the main attraction when I was a kid, was the springy diving board at the end of the pool. I can't believe they haven't made that illegal yet, and very happy they haven't at the same time.

A fast lane, slow/medium (3 lanes wide for overtaking) and a recreation lane for those who don't want to do laps. This is by far the best pool in Adelaide. Park atmosphere with a great 1960s style. The review below; explains that you can get stuck behind 'grannies', which is true if you're slower then grannies... otherwise just overtake or swim in the fast lane. In the 3 years I have been swimming here on a daily basis I have only had to slow down for people on maybe one lap every couple of visits to the pool. What is best about this place is when you go on a below 35 degree day after 4pm - There will be no-one there. I have had the entire olympic pool to myself... couldn't get any better then that.

The swimming pool is one of the cleanest in the State, so safe in fact you can drink it...not that you'd want to do it intentionally anyway but it won't make you sick after a few accidental gulps. This summer it will be open Mon - Fri 6.00am - 8.00pm and at $3.00 per entry it's one of the cheapest in SA. The pool is not undercover so slip, slop, slap or at least go when the sun isn't at it's fiercest. Lanes are segregated to cater for swim schools, coaching, lap swimming and for generally having a fun splash. It also offers a full gym inside the complex but for futher details check out the website or phone.

My partner and I signed up around may-June. With nothing but hassle. The person that signed us up, named Riley (who has since been fired for fraud) told us nothing about signing up to a lock in contract. We only were told once the late payments happened. I went in to settle the account and also gave this Riley boy my details over the counter to then still get charged late fees and my details had gone into thin air. After expressing my frustration they told us there isn't much they can do, the fee is around $300 to get out of the contract and we can freeze our accounts but it's a $5 fee each week for both of us. Mind you we have then got an email saying that from 8/7/25-1/09 we won't be charged anything and payments start again on the 4/09/25. Keep in mind we've been over charged for late fees that wouldn't of been charged if my bank details were taken and done nothing with them, also in the "free of charge period" I was charged $60 in different transactions. I've gone in today with no help. I'm getting asked to repeat parts of the story that don't matter like that I told them I never really wanted to join but got roped in by this Riley person. Irrelevant to the whole situation? I've also somehow since the payments starting again on the 4th of september weve been charged $151.43 which im not sure how any of this adds up. What would you do, I have tried to get in contact with the regional manager whom i had to seek out her details if correct as they refuse to give me the details to pass on the matter.

The bigger la e was filled with unruly children unsupervised by parents, so I wanted to use a free lane to walk and do my gente arm exercises in. Then 3 aggressive boys entered my lane and began throwing their arms around me as I was walking in my lane, they were about to injure me badly, that I had to swerve to the left to avoid their aggressiveness. I was terrified and very upset, and saw a pool worker staring at her pc screen and asked her to urgently cal, for a manager, Sharon arrived and I asked her to view the footage and speak with the 3 aggressive boys. Sharon discredited me with my full detailed explanation of what they did in my lane nearly injuring me. I will be taking my complaint to a higher management person. Lana Korvin

Join the ducks for a swim in the outdoor pool…read more.. Actually the ducks are fine company and only there durning winter when it's quiet. But I wanted to highlight the importance of cutting past the shiny brochures and smooth sales pitch when considering a membership at Next Gen. There's no doubt that it's an impressive gym with 5-star facilities. The problem is the management seems to think so too. They're guilty of being complacent at times with customer service. There's eagle-eyed attention to detail when it comes to signing new members. An activities board at the entrance, used to make it look like there's heaps of stuff going on, is updated daily. In reality, the information on this board is next to useless for members. But things you'd actually like to use, the iron, the scale, the toilets take ages to be fixed when they break. It's not often you need to talk to a staff member, but when you do, you can feel like you're interrupting. They're particularly bad at acknowledging you and at worst can be snarky. Which is funny because they mostly seem like good people and that it's the general culture around the gym. I'd like to join the council gym (North Adelaide Aquatic centre) which you can bundle with a years worth of golf at the North Adelaide Golf Course for roughly the same price as an ace member at Next Gen. But even though my contract's up, Next Gen requires 3 months notice to quit. I'm the idiot who signed the contract, but why do they make it so hard to leave..? Their facilities are impressive, but are not matched with equally impressive service.

The 25 metre lap pools are a good depth and wide enough lanes. The diving pool is fantastic for water running and for a more casual swim. The change rooms are clean and well-looked after. The members only change room is smaller and more private, and each cubicle has a soap dispenser, which is handy if you forget things as much as I do. The spas and saunas are great. There are two large spas, which I would go in more often if they weren't mostly filled with overweight old men or kissing couples. Nothing can keep me out of the sauna though. They have a dry and a wet sauna. I frequent the dry sauna, as it is just the right temperature that you can stay in it for a reasonable time. You're sweating like crazy, but it only becomes uncomfortable after about 10 minutes for me, which is longer than I can normally bear it. This is a well planned and set out facility, with plenty of showers and drinking fountains. I only wish I was a lot younger and could play in the kid's pools, because they look fantastic.
