Oh Beto Junction, you'll forever hold a special place in my heart as it pertains to highway rest…read morestops. The first time I visited this truck stop was probably 14-15 years ago when I was at KU. One of my best friends would meet her parents here as a midway point between Lawrence and Neodesha where they lived. There's a little diner in this rest stop that honestly is pretty decent and has great pie. Upon that visit I found this place charming, warm, and a nice little spot in an otherwise remote area. The next memorable time I stopped here I was driving back to KC from my friend's parents home in SEK, when I happened upon the worst snowstorm I've ever driven in. It was whiteout conditions, I was driving a really old Camry and was pretty young (in my twenties), so when I made it here I pulled over to wait out the worst of it and you know, calm myself down with some pie. Nowadays, I use this rest stop as a midway point break whenever I make it to my sister's house in Wichita. I haven't eaten here since the stow storm I found myself in a decade ago, but I have purchased snacks here, interacted with staff, and used the restrooms countless times. I think a decade ago this place was four stars - everything seemed well maintained and it was just newer so it all was a bit nicer. Nowadays, while the restaurant is still there, along with the impressive rotating case of pies, the rest stop area feels a bit dated and ho hum. It gets the job done though. The restrooms while not the cleanest on the highway are just fine, and there's never a wait. My only real qualm with this place is how poorly staffed it has been in recent years. Even though I'm often one of maybe three people in the entire rest stop, I am always waiting in a line to check out an it's slow. The folks working tend to seem bothered by you being there, and are often not helpful which is kind of a downer as well. The last time, I was getting a few waters and a juice, and I literally waited for ten minutes for someone to even show up so I COULD pay. In many ways this is a place that would be well serviced by an auto check out feature. At any rate, I'll keep stopping here. It's A-OK as Yelp would say, and I have a feeling it'll be around for another decade or so.

Okay so while I waffled between four and five stars for this travel stop, I had to land on five…read morebecause, and hear me out, THEY HAVE BIDETS. I can't express how funny this is to me, and how it charmed to no end. Let me set the stage. I arrived here because my four year old really needed a toilet break on our drive to central Kansas and this was the next one on our route. When I checked in I was really surprised to see the great reviews, as in my experience, even the best of travel stops have really mixed reviews based on all kinds of experiences. That being said, we made a beeline for the restroom. Once inside I was surprised to find a really fancy bidet attached to the toilet, along with detailed instructions on how to use it pasted to the wall. My daughter was very confused but used the toilet anyways, despite it being set to a warmed seat setting (which also made me laugh) "why is it so hot?" was a question she asked me. At any rate, once she was done in the restroom we explored the rest of the travel center and it's pretty basic except for the fact that they also sell the bidets and have a display for them in the middle of the store, which also I found to be entertaining. Overall, would I return? Yes. It's a unique and clean stop in Kansas and honestly worth it if just for experiencing something different.

Okay so I don't often update a review in the same calendar year, let alone just a month later, BUT…read morewe found ourselves once again in this area and given the opportunity to try it out one more time we decided it was worth it. First of all, I didn't use the family restroom and got to explore the regular women's room. Which much to my surprise was super clean and nice. Next time I'm here I'm taking my daughter into this restroom and avoiding the family restroom all together. This really set the tone for me and then we tried the fried pies! I looked them up on our way home (while I was enjoying my pie) and it turns out it's a family run business out of Oklahoma that has a few shops in independently run gas stations around the midwest and great plains. I loved their story, and the pies were so fun. Very tasty. I won't say it's the best pie I've ever had, but the novelty of it and the freshness of getting it right there made for a super fun roadside stop. Key takeaway: avoid the family restroom and take your child into the regular one - it's gonna be better.
