Very clean studio, warm lighting and smiles greet you as you enter. The organization of their extra mats, blocks and blankets is a sight to see, along with their paperless check-in process. I've taken a handful of classes here and they are all great, although the fire level classes are not for the faint at heart! Each instructor has their own unique way of transitioning flows and making each movement feel new by adding a variation of some sort. I can say after tough training sessions at Hoboken Jiu Jitsu the classes here are a great way to regain some mobility and aid in recovery. Having run a small gym for a long time there are a lot of things about Pavana that I really appreciate. Clean- it's a small place, yes, but it's always clean, the bathroom, the floors, the mats/blocks/blankets/straps they have for people to use look/smell clean. They have toiletries for people too like hand sanitizer, lotion, feminine products etc. Theres always insence or diffusers, candles so the place doesn't smell like sweat. Easy check in, booking classes via MINDBODY app and iPad at the desk. Classes for different levels. Super beginner to way advanced. Even crazy intense classes where the only yoga element is that it's held at a yoga studio lol Janel's class is NOT for the weak! And I used to train boxing, kickboxing, weightlifting and that class has me full body sweating from start to finish. They also offer meditation classes, restorative like stretching classes plus everything you'll need for class is provided too, all included w your membership. The regular yoga classes have fun themes sometimes like glow in the dark, 90s music, candle lit flow etc which keeps it interesting. Pavana seems to also be very interested in community, some of the teachers have newsletters, they're on social media, there's monthly challenges, different Hoboken events (I actually found out about them via the first street fair!) All the classes are for mix men and women young and old but all the teachers are women. There's a lot of classes through the day/night. The teachers are always available before or after class if you have questions, they're super sweet and very approachable. Always asking for suggestions and bring something different to each class. They're not like super hippy kinda full of shit yogis like a lot of places around hoboken just trying to scam students. It's really nice that it's just full of positive people trying to do better at something. I love the essential oils some of the girls share during savasana too! Yoga constantly reminds me to be patient, to recognize small victories, listen and notice even the slightest changes can have big impacts not only in my practice but all around me. I've been consistently coming to Janel's core class for the last 16 months twice a week, only missing few classes because of traveling. I went from 14 days trial pass to summer pass then to annual membership. I just recently renewed my membership for another year. That shows how much I love her class. Before committed to Janel's class, I had only few yoga classes ( less than 6 ). As a swimmer, skier and a quick learner, I quickly mastered basic poses and realized that I needed something more. It was the class description that draw my attention. This class "is not your regular yoga class" and very "challenging". I thought I gave it a shot! Class was at all level challenging which was exactly what I was expecting for. You can't leave this class without breaking a sweat unless you stop trying. After my first class, she came to me explaining that she didn't have the chance to talk to me before the class, asking how to pronounce my name and how I feel after class. I came to the class following Wednesday, other yogis started to introduce themselves to me. I was so happy that I found a fun class, a caring teacher and a great community. That's how my yoga journey began. Here I am, 16 months later, my body has changed so much, I lost at least 20 lbs. My core and back are continually strengthening. She I also did my first wheel and headstand in core class. It's all because Janel's encouraging. Keep in mind that this is not your traditional yoga class. She creatively combines other movement practice into her class to help your yoga practice. Then I went to look at your other negative reviews for other business. It is so ridiculous that you gave one star for a restaurant that does not have a vegan menu. It was a traditional Szechuan Cuisine restaurant that certainly won't have the menu to suite new vegan trend. You could just simply leave and I don't know where all these self righteous coming from. I have loved attending this yoga studio- I've had an unlimited membership for about two years and recently switched to a per class basis due to a move. Even though I am a good bit father away, I will still be making an effort to attend classes when I can. The studio is beautiful and the teachers are welcoming and kind. I do not think of myself as having a "typical" yoga body and I have always felt comfortable and welcome. Some of my favorite classes are Candlelit Flow, any of the Pure Flow water level courses (the early am ones during the week with Danielle and Larry were some of my favorites), and the amazing Chakra flow class taught by Autumn. I chose Pavana due to their central location and offerings early in the morning and late in the evening which complemented my work schedule. Pros: Instructors were great at finding a balance between beginners and advanced practitioners. The studio was easy to find and kept clean between classes. All the classes I attended started promptly. Cons: It took a month for my membership to be activated due to slow email responses (1 response a week) and college students at the front desk who did not know how to handle situations other than check in. Quite a few times classes were cancelled last minute (within 12 hours of the class start time). For a studio with such great reviews and so many instructors on the roster, I thought they would be able to find instructors to take over the class rather than cancel. If my review were solely based on the quality of instructors, it would be 5 stars. However, the management of this studio seriously hurts its ability to compete with the many yoga studios in Hoboken. I would suggest booking via ClassPass rather than subscribing directly to the studio. read more

I've been attending Pavana Yoga pretty much since they opened a few years ago. At first I would do drop in classes or purchase a 10 class pass and then I purchased a black Friday yearly unlimited membership and it was one of the best things I did. I've been taking Janel Duross' class for about 2 years now and it wasn't until her class that I decided to fully commit to my practice. I've improved SIGNIFICANTLY as a yogi because of the challenges and encouragement Janel presents us with in every class. Her class is challenging for a reason and she tries to inform everyone of this before entering because she cares deeply about her students and how they feel before, during and after taking her class. Like a lot of people, I started yoga for the health and fitness benefits. I wanted to be more flexible, more balanced, stronger and leaner. For the first time in my life, I can see abs forming and I know my body has the strength to do things I could not have done a year ago! Her sequences are unique and in some ways non-traditional. She'll have you on a connecting journey where you'll be amazed you went from one pose and ended up in something completely different. Only a teacher with her level of talent and experience could put those pieces together. On a mental and emotional level, Janel's class has encouraged me to face my fears (aka inversions) and at least try! Even though I'm not able to do a lot of the poses right off the bat, I know that even moving in that general direction will only help me get there and I have had many small victories in her class. Her support is unlike any other yoga teachers and she's one of those rare teachers that you just know yoga and her students success is her motivation for what she does. Finally, Janel has managed to create a community within her core class. The same people show up week after week not only because we've connected to her as an instructor but because we genuinely support one another. When one person accomplishes something we're all there to cheer them on! For context, I have been consistently practicing yoga (hot vinyasa and a sprinkle of dharma) for 19 months now. In search of advancing my practice, I stumbled upon Janel's advanced "Pure Core Fire Level" classes a few months ago at Pavana. ABSOLUTELY LOVE LOVE LOVE her class!! Janel's classes are so unique. I love the focus on core and back and Janel's attentiveness to alignment, and especially because of my herniated disc, I was looking for guidance from an experienced teacher to get me into advanced poses safely. Janel does this with (1) warmups (2) extensive use of props and (3) painstakingly planned sequence of classes. It is evident that Janel takes teaching and her students' progress very seriously. She takes a lot of time to plan for classes and sequence them in such a way that learnings from each sequence build on top of each other. So if you're a new student, I'd be mindful of that. And if you're completely new to yoga, I'd be EVEN MORE mindful of how challenging this class is. Prior experience is highly recommended. Most importantly, her classes are so fun! If it weren't, she wouldn't have such a cult following. I can't speak to other teachers at Pavana, but I'm sure they're great! The studio is really clean and as a germaphobe, I do appreciate that. However, the studio does have room for improvement. The layout is a little odd/inconvenient. For those of you who work long hours and don't have time to run home to change before class (me), please beware that the changing room is inside, past the room where classes are held. You will not be able to change until class is let out. And there isn't always someone at the front desk. If there is no staff to man the studio during class, the studio is locked, which is slightly unpleasant if you're waiting in the cold or rain. Anyway, hope this review helps! I'm a ClassPass member who practices regularly at three Hoboken studios, including Pavana. It's a very welcome addition to the Hoboken yoga scene! Pros: free yoga mats! Love this, especially since other studios charge $2. If you're coming straight from work, you don't have to worry about bringing a mat or having cash on hand. Also, the instructors, especially Rashila Amin and Meghan Kramer, are great here. Rashila brings a beautiful spirituality and mindfulness into her classes, and they are an incredible workout. Meghan's class is fun, funky and has a great playlist! The studio itself is clean and pretty, with little toiletries to help you get ready afterwards. I've been going to Pavana for well over 2 years and I can't believe it's taken me this long to write a review. I originally was interested in a physical activity to supplement my long distance running, so I tried out several studios in Hoboken on ClassPass before committing to an unlimited membership with Pavana. I honestly was really terrible at yoga before I started and can't believe how much this studio has allowed me to further my practice. The instructors here are truly some of the most experienced, qualified, and talented in Hoboken, and they're all incredibly nice and welcoming. I usually go to 4-5 classes a week, and Janel, Megan, and Autumn in particular are some of my favorite instructors. I also particularly love the variety that Pavana offers--from high-energy, advanced level classes, to inspirational themes, to relaxing sound baths. The schedule also has a decent amount of classes from the early morning to late evening, which is great for a busy schedule. I also love how gorgeous the space is, and I found the monthly membership to be super affordable. read more

Very unique space! I'm a fan of the candlelit flow, but after taking several classes here it's hard to pick a favorite. The teachers are attentive and knowledgeable and the atmosphere is super relaxing. It's right near the path, yet also away from the crowd of Washington street. So disappointed in this studio- they are literally calling to be sued! Attended 2 classes here and am ready to let go of the $49 I spent for 2 weeks unlimited because I am so not injuring myself going here. The "Core Fire" class I attended yesterday was nothing short of circus- what we did was not yoga for sure. To start with, the teacher, in an albeit condescending way asked me if I knew this was an 'advanced' class. When I said yes she AGAIN crosschecked "you do realize this is a hard class"...Very demeaning. Next the sequencing, all levels crazy- who starts back bend 7 minutes into a class and how is that not prone to injury? From wide leg forward fold to a curl on the head...From lunges to deep camel poses and this was in the first 15 min of the class...People were running their lower back and spine. Some people also voiced out that it hurts..NOT ALL PAIN IS GOOD PAIN! After my lower back revolted (and I am a seasoned yogi who knows her back bends - from camels, to chakrasana to king pigeon et al, and who knows when her body is READY to get into these poses and when not) I decided not to do those poses. So we went from garud asana to ek pada koundinyasana- I decided to take it further to fallen angel cause that was in my practice, instead of doing some version the teacher wanted. I WAS NOT ready to go there but was almost pushed by the teacher- she kept saying "move your leg, straighten your leg"- I gonored once, then twice, then felt pushed to do it the third time cause she was literally standing on my head and going on saying it and guess what- I fell- and hard! Hurt my head badly. In some complicated poses like going into chakrasana from standing up, she wasnt even looking at the students, but was talking to a specific student about something else! At the end of the class someone actually said their back feels tight. Its so sad that sell this as yoga. And the funny part was, after all of this, I really did not 'break a sweat' in the class- from an exhaustion point of view I was left yearning for more 'yang'. Other points- the studio locks the doors so if you come earlier you are waiting outside even if its raining cats and dogs. Not attendant outside when classes are going on. You cant even cal lthem during office hours- such cost cutting! The bathroom has no mats, no airfreshner- they charge so much and such cheapness. The other class I attended was also FIRE level and while that was significantly better than the other 'circus' class, there was no creativity in sequencing - one suryanamaskar after another. And was no even close to what a FIRE level clas should ideally be! NEVER GOING BACK TO THIS PLACE AND WARNING EVERYONE TO STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE AND NOT INJURE THEMSELVES AND GO TO CLASSES BY SERIOUS YOGA TEACHERS read more

As a man it's always going to be a bit harder going to a yoga class at a new place if you're a beginner but here there's no fuss and easy to visit and accessible classes for all.
