Dr. Maggie is supposedly a more holistic leaning Vet. If she was, wouldn't she advise against a biopsy? Biopsies when popped spread the toxic/cancer cells inside the sack to other organs & body parts. She definitely knows this, but lied to my face when I asked her if it would spread the cancer --Then charged over $400 for it. The audacity. You should always trust your gut, do research on holistic, natural pet websites & never blindly trust any doctor. If I would've, my precious baby would have lived longer, maybe would still be here to this day. Stay away from pet vaccines, flea & tick medications & deworming -- All poison. I cannot say enough wonderful things about Dr. Dave. I had heard so many great reviews about him that I decided to switch practices specifically to see him and I am so glad I did. Before finding Dr. Dave, I had been frustrated with the care my dogs were receiving elsewhere, particularly with one of my dogs who had a stubborn ear infection that kept coming back. Despite multiple visits to my previous vet, the issue was never fully resolved. From the very first appointment with Dr. Dave, the difference was clear. He took the time to listen carefully and explained everything in a way that made me feel informed and reassured. After that initial visit, the ear infection was finally cured and has never returned. Since then, Dr. Dave has been caring for all three of my dogs, and the level of dedication he shows is unmatched. He is incredibly thorough, compassionate, and attentive. He always takes the time to address every concern I have, no matter how small, and he goes above and beyond by following up multiple times after visits to check on my dogs' progress. That kind of genuine care and commitment is rare, and it means so much as a pet owner. !!!!DO NOT GO THERE!!!! Long review but there are so many WOW I cant believe he said that or did that moments. Summary- Dr. Dave overmedicated my cat, had to revive her, and on top of that charged me for all the things he needed to do to fix his mistake. Also had no advice for me about the medication prescribed to her. Before I truly get into this review/story I want to start off by saying I started going to Paumanok because Dr. Maggie was there and offered both eastern and western approaches to healing and working with animals. I really loved her and the staff behind the desk. Dr. Maggie was always so kind and I felt like she really cared. All of the techs and the women behind the desk were also very kind, so that was another reason I enjoyed going there. However, Dr. Maggie left, and so I was in touch with Dr. Dave about my cat Zaia who was prescribed fluoxetine for her agitation and stress concerning her skin itchiness. Its been an adventure trying to find the right medicine or supplements to help ease my cat. Anyway I made an appointment with doctor Dave and he suggested a full body exam and blood work etc. My cat is feisty and won't comply with strangers unless she is on some kind of relaxer...but he suggested sedatives. So reluctantly I approve of this. He calls me 45 mins later and tells me they oversedated her, he had to revive her, her heart rate and body temp dropped significantly, but she's going to be okay. Says he doesn't know why she responded like that so he wants to do extra x-rays to check her heart?!? I should not have approved but I did. I picked her up and the bill is now double what he estimated. He barely goes over it, I have to remind him to explain it to me and go over the x-rays.. He forgets why he told me they wanted to x-ray.. Doesn't even mention her heart and when I ask about it he says "Oh I am glad you remembered to ask." There is $200 on the bill for "extra medications" which were give to revive her...his mistake I had to pay for. He has the nerve to tell me "and it should have been more than that we gave you a discount." KICKER - I asked him if she should still take the fluoxetine tonight and he said,"good question." He had no idea. (Meanwhile I know you can't just stop giving behavioral meds without side effects) He called me the following day, today, to go over the bloodwork...which was exactly the same as it had been months ago during her last exam. I am still stuck on his over sedating her, so I ask, "Did you by any chance weigh her yesterday?" And he says yes. I asked, "Did you weigh her before you sedated her or after?" And he says he weighed her after! So I asked, "Oh, so how did you know how much to give her if you didn't know her weight?" and he says, "I eyed her." ARE YOU KIDDING ME. I can't even believe he said that! This guy has no clue what he's doing and will charge you $$$$$ for his mistakes. Thankfully he did not kill my cat, for that I am grateful. Dr Henson is a charlatan he'll sell you anything and everything he can. He'll also ask you what you do for a living to try and gauge income. He gave my two dogs shots I specifically told him not to and then attempted to charge me which I didn't pay. Told my friend his cat needed eye surgery for thousands of dollars. My dog was a patient at this practice for over three years. Recently, he had to be rushed to animal emergency in the middle of the night where he had surgery, followed by serious complications and he remained in critical condition for three weeks. During that time I spoke with Dr. Hensen at Paumanok, who said he would be happy to discuss any procedures the emergency doctors suggested or answer any questions I might have. The following day my dog's condition worsened. I called Paumanok, explained the urgency and asked for the doctor please call me as soon as he was available. I called several more times, begging the staff to give the doctor my message, hoping he would get back to me. That was two weeks ago. I still haven't received a call from him. That is unconscionable! Such lack of compassion, especially knowing my beloved dog was close to death, is unethical and unacceptable! read more

We brought our elderly cat to Paumanok for an appointment. Our cat was approx. 20 years old and having difficultly breathing. We knew there was likely not going to be many options for him but just wanted him to be comfortable. Dr. David Hensen comes into the room and the first thing he says is ' Oh I thought I was seeing a dog'. No introduction. We then proceed to tell him why we are there and the only thing he says is 'oh I didn't realize he was that old'. He then examines our cat and basically tells us there are not many options other than doing a full workup or putting him to sleep. No emotions or no compassion AT ALL. He then says if we put him to sleep we have to figure out if we want him cremated or we want his body. I was amazed at how a VET someone who's supposed to love animals can handle a sensitive situation and act like they can care less. The vet tech was so kind and even talked to us after the doctor left the room and then came out and gave us some treats for our cat. DO NOT bring your animals to dr. Hensen. We have used dr Maggie in the past and had a pleasant experience but I would avoid Dr Hensen at all costs. read more

Without giving a long backstory to how we got here, my baby girl, Lola, saw Dr. Gross for a consultation. There was the possibility of a grim outcome. Dr. Gross was so compassionate, I trusted him completely. He didn't go "all in" with charging me a fortune up front, he did everything in steps. At almost 11, Lola headed into a major, possibly complicated surgery. She ended up with a 20 pound tumor being removed!!! I swear Dr. Gross saved my baby's life. Just a few days later, she is getting stronger and healthier everyday. The entire office, from reception to Vet techs showed such care and compassion. And I can never thank Dr. Gross enough for his care and knowledge. read more

I have to leave this review as a reminder to not book with Dr. David Hansen. First and foremost, I am not sure how he is still a licensed vet. He should not be allowed to practice. I brought my dog in for a case of diarrhea (my dog had a severe case to where he had mucus and liquid stool). The doctor gave my dog a rectal exam without any lubrication and sent us on our way, with medication so he could charge us extra. He also took a heartworm test which usually takes about 10 mins to come back and the results weren't given until over 24h later. Story continued; my dog continued to have diarrhea but this time with blood, mucus, and stool. I called the vet back and he said he wouldn't be able to call us until 9pm (he never called) I ended up having to take my dog to the ER for a care of Hemorrhagic gastroenteritis. Yup, it was an emergency that this terrible man never even tested or had the audacity to test for. My dog had to stay in the ER at another animal hospital for 12h to get IV fluids and IV antibiotics. The next day the office called to say my dogs results for Heart worn was negative- but of course, did not ask how my dog was doing. Thank you, for injuring my dog - you are disputable. read more

They were informative, loving , kind and walked us through the process of having to put out loved one down with complete compassion and empathy. Dr. Dave does not care about your animal at all. Literally had 2 assistants pin my dog down to give him his physical. I told him he'd be fine and not trying to get away if he didn't have two people on top of him, he completely disregarded. This was the worst vet experience I've had in my life. DO NOT go here. Horrible. Didn't want to cause a stink so I paid my $400 to remove a tick growth and some b.s medicine he added on to rip me off. I wish I was more vocal when I was there with them but I was furious. This vet is very rude and has the lack of compassion not only did he not want to take the time needed to answer questions regarding my family pet but he stated that tomorrow is a holiday he probably won't make it till the following day so euthanize him but hurry up and make a choice because I have other patients and have a life to get on with. I had a great experience here. I originally had as planning on bringing my cat here just once because he needed to be seen urgently so I took him to the first place that had an appointment available. I ended up having such a good experience that I decided to make this my regular vet for him and my other cats. Everyone that I have spoken to here has been so nice and helpful. I have been here 3 times now and after each appointment I felt confident that my cat received the care that he needed. He has been having urinary and allergy issues for over a year and this was the first vet that gave me long term solutions and a definite answer to what was going on. read more

I wish I had a better reason for writing this review... I took in a stray kitten, and decided to take her to get checked out first thing this morning. I knew she must have fleas and mites, which she did, but I didn't know she had a hernia that was badly infected. She was unfortunately too sick for me to take care of, so I had to make the very difficult decision to put her down. For the surgery she needed, she just wasn't well enough to even stand a chance. I appreciated the honesty, and the reasonable prices even though I am of course heartbroken. Dr. Allison I believe was who I dealt with, and was as nice as could be. Have been going here for almost 20 years... Dr. Deidre and Dr. Maggie are great. If you go there, ask for one of them. We use them for boarding as well, when we go away. This place should be the last place you take your pets please! My dog had a mass on his shoulder area that ended up being cancer, we had the mass removed here and they assured us that he would need no further treatment and the cancer was not serious or life threatening and it was removed completely during surgery. We took our dog home and had been back to their office two separate times after this for physicals and to make sure that he was still cancer free and in good health. They make sure to run all the tests they can to make as much money off you as possible, but they truly don't care about the health of your pet. My dog passed away 7 months after his surgery because the cancer had spread to his organs and we had no idea because this place assured us he was in great health, even went as far as having blood work and tests done both times we visited after his surgery! He was in fact not fine, and not healthy. My 6 year old boy is now dead because of their inability to care for and treat animals. Writing this review to give a non biased opinion of this practice. I've been taking my pet to Paumanok for eight years now and have had nothing but excellent service. The staff and the vets are all compassionate and understanding when dealing with my dog who's had some issues over the years. I see that the negative reviews on this board mainly concern cost and poor treatment. All I can say is that my experience has been positive in every way. Both Dr Dave and Dr Dee are highly skilled professionals and show compassion and understanding for your pets wellbeing. I've witnessed friends and neighbors over the years spend huge sums of money on pet care when they get sick, but good care costs money. I've also seen people who have let their pets get enormously overweight which is animal cruelty at its worst! I've also seen people who neglect their pets health until they get sick and then expect the vet to perform wonders. I have recommended people to this practice over the years and everyone has been happy with the care and professionalism they show. read more

Dr David Henson abused my family's emotional state by recommending euthanasia without physically examining our Pit Bull. He stated that my pet's hind leg paralysis could be caused "by possibly a slipped disc; I really don't know." He did discuss diagnostic testing and possible surgery without touching at the minimum the spine of my dog. He only checked his heartbeat and his vet tech took his temperature. He totally dismissed the possible diagnosis of tick paralysis; as we as a family informed him of a bite on his foot. Dr Henson then started that the would was caused by " self mutilating behavior;" after not even inquiring about the medical or behavioral history of our pet. He knew that our pet was in pain and as we were emotional, emphasized euthanasia. Today we needed further assistance. His staff was nasty and cruel; not only to me; but also to our daughter. Is this how you treat a grieving family? He also called my daughter harassing her with legal language and evidence procedure. Why would he do this? What are and were they hiding? By misrepresenting the possible condition by "guessing;" he failed my dog and our family. A total disgrace to the profession. read more

My dog has been seeing Dr. Maggie for about two years and she is excellent. She's very sweet and has a great deal of patience with animals. I have been taking my dog and cat here for a few years. I made the change when the "Affordable" pet care clinic at the Brookhaven shelter started raising their prices. It is a nice hospital with vets and technicians that care. All the vets here are good, but my personal favorite is Dr. Maggie. When you take your pet there for a sickness or accident, they will always call the next day to see how he/she is doing. I appreciate that. I also bring my dog here for grooming and they manage to groom him nicely ,even though he hates to be groomed. When I attempt grooming him at home he growls and tries to bite me.. He does very well with them. I would definitely recommend this pet hospital/grooming to anyone that loves their pets. read more

I wrote a detailed review last year which was deleted. Rather than re-write all the details, I will just urge you to reconsider before taking your animal to this place. I am still grieving over the loss of my beloved cat of 12 years who Dr. Hensen pressured me to put down last year after doing only a very brief physical exam & virtually NO lab or diagnostic tests. My cat had thrown up a few times before our visit & based on my cat's age & dislike of being picked up, she advised this was the solution. She led me to believe there were no other options. At the time, I was very distressed & did not know what to do. I asked about lab & she exaggerated the price to $1000.00 to further deter me. I even asked to call my brother, who rescues animals, to discuss her recommendation, to which she asked, "why?" She told me she had been doing this for 35 years. In other words, she should not be questioned. I was not even given an opportunity to hold my cat & say good-bye. It was close to 8PM & I truly believe she just wanted to get home & did not think that a 12 year old cat was not worth it. A subsequent visit to her to discuss this as well as a visit to another Vet only validated that the wrong decision was made. I live everyday with the guilt of having let this woman pressure me into this irreversible decision. I cannot get my cat back but I can warn others that unless you are going just for well visits, & even then, this is the most heartless Vet I have ever been to. Cold to the core. read more

I was looking for a Vet (as mine is on vacation this week --Patchogue Animal Hospital)...and came across a place I used when I first moved here---Paumanok ---NOT surprised by the bad reviews but sad to see the same ridiculous stuff is still going on so many years later.... I moved here in 2000 and used this place for my cats---extremely expensive I thought (and I moved from Manhattan)....but neither cat had many problems so it was more on a once a year check up and shots and maybe a few times some eye discharge etc...(BUT they were always 'pushing" for more)...anyway...in 2007 our family got a Pug---and by 2009--she was developing some problems walking--Dr Dave stated she needed surgery to repair some hip and joint problems that are common with the breed......stated it would be about $2,500....I told him that was a lot...and was it REALLY necessary?....he said yes..and "don't you have a tax refund check coming"?..SWEAR TO GOD....I could not believe that response...LOL....sad..really.....looked around and found Dr Harvey Atlas (Retired now)...Patchogue Animal Hospital...basically a mile away but hidden in back off of Rt 112.....was told by him.... the Pug didn't need surgery and to use a Glucosamine tablet every day instead......The pug lasted another 8 years...no surgery...so cant believe this place is still doing the SAME stuff....every DR or Vet will have good and bad....but its the BAD patterns you don't like to see....I still use Patchogue Animal Hospital...the vet that took over, DR Armfield, does a good job...and best?..doesn't push for a thousand tests.....blood....etc..etc..unless it looks like its needed..--that's my 2 cents... read more

The staff took excellent care of him for four days, doing everything they could to get him well . Sadly, I had to make a tough decision to have her cat euthanized after he showed no improvement. We just took our dog here to get a pedicure and all of her shots. She is a Shepard mix and pretty aggressive. No other vet would take her and sedate her to get the work done. At this place, everyone was super nice and supportive. They were able to get the job done very well...and fast. We had dr David Hensen and he was very informative. He didn't make us feel guilty about the behavior of our dog. She is pretty aggressive when people fuss with her due to her past being abused by her previous owners. I absolutely adore this veterinarian. I had brought in a rescue kitten to Farmingvile hospital which wanted to charge me a few thousand and no guarantee she did or didn't have feline leukemia. I left there as sick as my kitten. 3 days later found paumanok. My kitten was so badly sick. They told me it was my decision but unfortunately she wouldn't make it. I loved the honesty. Of course I adopted another cat from Brookhaven who told me the cat was 6months old. Took him to Paumanok and found out he's 2. He needed surgery for a huge abcess and I'm on a payment plan thankfully. They were detailed with billing and discussed some things he may need and things he really would need and recommended. Again honesty. The doctors are amazing, the staff is kind and Joe the bird is so adorable. I recommend this vet and love Dr. Alison and Dr.Dave and whoever I didn't see I'm sure I'd like. I have had many animals and many trips to vet's and this by far is the best. I'm hoping not to see them too much lol. This place is the worst. Took our family dog REESE here in the past, years ago. The owner walked the dog out to me and didn't know she was a girl. Did he even do anything? He dragged her out and didn't look at me or Reese. I was furious. He overcharged for what he 'did' as well. Luckily It was nothing major and Reese was fine. Just today we took Reese back, due to the covid, it is very hard to get an emergency appointment. She is not doing well (shaking, has a lump on her belly, not eating, throwing up) so we bring her here against my best wishes. They do one X-ray and charge 500$ then they want 500 more dollars for blood work and a urine test. They performed the tests but wouldn't read them because we thought the price was too much. Then they want $350 for an ultra sound. Is this common practice to price gouge at the end of a pets life? A pet that is close to 13 years old that we share so many fond memories with. When does it stop? Once we figure out what is wrong, how much will that cost? How much for medicine to prolong her life? They show no compassion. They are greedy and only care for money. They won't work with you. Now we have to take Reese somewhere else that will hopefully help! read more

This is an honest review. My husband and I took our beloved cat to this practice late one night in a panic because she was sick and they were open late and we could get there quickly. We saw dr. Dave and essentially he told us our cat was sick and wanted us to pay $1,500+ for him to run tests on her, just for the night. He showed us what the bill would be, with all the charges and he had even added in $150 in "micelanesious" charges because he said he "never knows" what other tests he might have to run. I said, I love my pet but I do not have that kind of money is there anything else I can do? He said we can give her fluid and send you home with amoxicillin and she should start to feel better in the morning. I had a bad feeling. The next day there was no improvement, she definitely got worse over night. We took her to our regular veterinary clinic, and they told us she unfortunately most likely had cancer, they could feel the large lump under her liver before they even did the xray. It had progressed too quickly and there was nothing we could do. We said goodbye to her that day. All in all, I believe Dr. Dave absolutely knew how sick my pet was and had every intention of taking my money and then telling me the next day that she had to be put to sleep. Absolutely disgusting. It makes me sick just thinking that I even stepped foot in that place. read more

I was able to get an appointment rather quickly as their hours are very flexible and fit into most everyone's schedule. The office was clean and the staff was very pleasant. I was most impressed when I needed to call with a concern that following Sunday. A vet was on staff and she immediately came to the phone and spent about 10 minutes talking to me and addressed all my questions. She told me that Dr. Hensen would call me back the next day, and she absolutely did. In fact, I received several follow up calls during the two weeks since taking my dog to the appointment, all to check on his health. I must also say that last year we brought our lab to Dr. Dave Hensen who diagnosed his scratching problem when no other vet could. I highly therefore highly recommend this vet practice.
