It's now June and I hadn't even heard from her, so I went this morning and picked up my paper work and will find another tax person. She gave me a bill for $375. Filing an extension is free, and I had 3 short conversations with her on the phone, yielding no useful information other then her emphasizing the base fee was $1200. and advising me to call the IRS with my questions - which I did. She was useless. I"ve never been late with taxes until connecting with this firm. I guess I'm 'small potatoes" and their bigger clients come first.

I'd like to give my review in support of Anita Peca and the Walpole Company in Santa Barbara…read more My husband and I started our association with them in 1983, upon the recommendation of my father. Marvin Walpole was his tax advisor and was recommended to us. We were with him, then a few other associates, until we were lucky enough to meet Anita and she took over our tax preparation. We've been helped by Anita Peca for at least 20 years, and we wouldn't want anyone else to do our taxes. She is so knowledgeable about all tax requirements and keeps up with the ever changing rules and regulations! She helped us set up a LLC with my sister and she does those taxes for us too. She and the business associates in Walpole work together on those taxes and have been since 2015. We moved to Nevada 6 years ago, and guess what? We refused to change to a tax company up here, when we have Anita and the whole Walpole company to take care of our taxes!! We are not "big cheeses", just ordinary folks, but we've been taken care of very competently by Anita and the rest of Walpole & Company. It is no surprise that Anita and the rest are so busy at tax time-they are the best and no one wants to use anyone else!! Sincerely, Bonnie R

One of my tax years was simply a nightmare. I had tried to file myself through TurboTax and even…read moretried another way and nothing was going through. I received a letter from the IRS and remembered that the dad of one of my students and his wife had their own tax prep business. I gave Rod and Julia a call and they were happy to help me with this issue. Also I used them for this year's return. So my problem was resolved and they will be my go to tax preparers from here on out. I think their rates are competitive. Mostly I just trust them.

I highly recommend against using SB Tax Pros. While Rod is a very nice guy, I do not believe he is…read morea good CPA. He may be a good CPA for maybe the basic of basic tax needs, but for anything slightly more complicated (stocks, crypto, backdoor roth IRA conversions, tax credits, etc) Firstly, when I sent him my tax documents, I also gave him specific instructions on what forms to fill out because my tax situation is a bit more complex than a typical tax payer. Not only did he not follow my instructions, he didn't even properly fill out the forms he was supposed to fill out. For anyone interesting, if you did a backdoor roth IRA, that requires an 8606 form which I told him he needed to fill out. Never happened. I also gave him other instructions as well such as using a previous years tax credit carryover. He never did that either. These mistakes resulted in him saying that I owed more than $13k to the IRS. I saved myself $13k by doing my owe taxes instead using TurboTax rather than paying Rod to do my taxes. Secondarily, before all of this, I recommended him to a coworker. With my coworker, Rod did not properly fill in the cost basis for capital gain/loss reporting even though my coworker has proof that he sent in both the 1099 and the supplemental stock forms (which has the adjusted cost basis). I ended up catching this mistake when I reviewed my coworkers taxes. Rod just used the cost basis of $0 rather than the actual cost basis. This resulting in over a $40k mistake in capital gain/loss reporting that my coworker never should have owed. So to summarize, do not go to SBTaxPros for anything complex, anything stock related, etc. It can cost you thousands of dollars, or even 10's of thousands of dollars.
