    Plaque on statue

Nice drive over the bridge.Parked at the Wells Fargo parking lot and was there for less than 10 mins. I did use the atm at Wells Fargo due to you have to be a customer in order to park there

Probably the best free photo op in Portland! It turned out the Paul Bunyan statue (no babe tho!) was a short walk from our airbnb (unplanned honestly!) and was a ton of fun to stop by! The statue was actually taller than expected, and in a much smaller area (it's really just a small corner of an end street) but was easy to walk to and get picked up from as it's listed in Lyft's directory XD I'd love to see a bit more about the statue written somewhere, but all in all a definite wonderful first stop on our Portland trip and absolutely set the ton for how fabulous the weekend would be!

What everyone gets wrong about this Statue is its true Importance. Paul was built to ward off Raiding parties from the north trying to steal our Children and Cattle. He was also Constructed from the blood and flesh and then covered in a plaster shell to keep those meaty bits safe. Sort of like an M&M. His mortal enemy and true rival is Harvey the Bunny who stalks the backroads of Tualatin. After their battle back in 69 neither of them left without a few scars and decided to have a truce of sorts. Both agreeing to stay on their own side of the river and only collect sacrifices from amongst their own followers. The reason Pauls shirt is red is to hide the wounds he suffered that still weep blood. Remember, every third Saturday and 5th monday a sacrifice of flesh is required.

    Paul in another light.

Cool little piece of local culture! Worth a stop if you're in the area, and there are plenty of nearby coffee shops and restaurants to slake your thirst and hunger.

There's not much to do here other than gawk at a giant statue, but it's a cool photo opportunity for your social feeds nonetheless. Not sure if you're supposed to, but you can get pretty up close and personal with Mr. Bunyon. If you're planning on getting weird, just know that this landmark is on a busy street, so you'll be silently judged while traffic passes and you do whatever pose you feel inclined to do. If you're just jumping out to snap a few pics, you can utilize the parking lots that are adjacent, but I wouldn't dawdle as you might get towed/ticketed.

Wow! An incredibly large Paul Bunyan Statue (has been here since 1959) in the middle of 2 busy intersections (in Kenton), in front of a Wells Fargo Branch. Only in Portland, Oregon. After my husband and I had visited the Victorian Belle for The Miracle of a Million Lights Christmas display, I found the yelp page for this monstrous statue and decided to head over (only 2 miles away). We arrived a little after 9 pm and decided to just park at the Wells Fargo parking lot since they were closed and then just walked around to snap a few photos. At this time, no one was around so we could take some people free photos. Pretty cool that Paul Bunyan, this rugged ol' lumberjack of a man stands so tall with his mighty ax. Definitely an interesting sight to see and worth a stop and photo op if you are in the area.

Fun to see this on our road trip back to San Diego. Pulled over, stretched our legs, and took photos with Mr Paul Bunyan himself!

We came on a Thursday around 10:00 AM, and was fortunate that the traffic was very light, and there were no other tourists taking pictures. The statue is huge, just as huge as his celebrity status, and his fabled reputation. I had to cross the street in order to get the entire statue inside my iPhone camera view. There's no cost to visit, but finding parking may be a little tricky. I'm a Wells Fargo bank customer, so I did a transaction in order to use the parking lot.

    #Lumberjacks rejoice! #Plaid is perfect! #paulbunyan

When in Portland... I'm still not really sure why there's a massive monument to a lumberjack right off the freeway here, but I like it! Lumberjacks are in right now, and I've kinda bought into the whole movement. Plaid flannel shirts and jeans have been my code of comfort this winter, and I've really started to like it. And this statue is the ultimate epic monument to lumberjacks the world over. But I still don't know why it's here in Portland. I mean, they do have a large population of Lumbersexuals, but this had to be here before they arrived. As I write this I'm recalling a large number of placards around the statue. I bet they explain the whole thing. In typical Michael T fashion, I was more interested in sharing photos of this on social media, than actually paying attention. Let this be a lesson! P.S. According to Wikipedia there are many Paul Bunyan statues around the country but THIS is the most famous! http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Bunyan_Statue

You know what... sure why not! I am here after all. A shout out to the first hipster: Paul Bunyan! Standing tall and straight with his giant ax ready for your selfies. He wasn't as tall as I thought he would be and there was no Babe (sad face). I think if your visiting Portland, this is a must.. at least for your first time.

    Lolia S.

A special review, my husband's first (and probably last) Yelp review: "A must see for all handlers of wood, be ye sawmen, axemen, pitchmen or rollers of the log. Paul looms large in his checkered flannel and looks to the NW." He wanted to review Paul and give him 5 stars but he didn't want to sign up for Yelp. The Paul Bunyan statue was built in 1959. The massive statue of Paul sans the Blue Ox stands 31 feet tall. If you stop by, check out the Kenton neighborhood, formerly a meatpacking town, for its small town America charm.

A giant Lumberjack in the middle of a city, standing in all his bearded glory and towering above the tourist snapping his photo like the paparazzi. No red carpet here, but that flannel? Runway ready! A group of cohorts and I visited on a tour de Portland and it's a photo op I'm glad we didn't miss to commemorate our trip. There's nothing else around really it seemed and the roads around the statue are busy. DO look both ways, DONT forget the selfie!

    Brad B.

This statue is soooo, well, it's so damn Portland, and I love portland! It was a surprise destination on a recent double decker bus tour and bar crawl that we were on for work and I thought it was the perfect touch to really get us in the "lumber-jack" and "lumber-jill" mood. The statue itself is massive and a little beat but that is exactly what you'd expect of Paul Bunyan, right? Rugged, tattered and rough around the edges. I will also chime in that this may be the smartest statue that I've ever met. Why you ask? This man chose to stay stationary in Portland with a great view of another PDX landmark, The Dancin' Bare. What a view!

Some say they haven't seen an account with this many reviews but there is indeed some accounts that have way surpassed my amount of reviews. I believe there is a Yelper out there (Bruce K.) that is from Charlotte, North Carolina that comes in with 23,000 reviews and 61,000 pictures for his reviews as of 2024 so I have waaaay more review writing to do to even get remotely close to this guy. The reviews I write is for something that is unique only to the place I have adopted as home ( or the region that I call home as opposed to a city). Previously I have written about the mountains of our region like Mount Rainier but this time around I wanted to write about something more urban and a place I always love visiting...Portland! The White Stag Sign is so signature Portland! We have seen it lit up at night and have seen it during the day. All of which we have managed to get different angles to look at. As other reviewers say the admission is free... which kind of makes sense since it's a sign. This sign at times seems to be so obvious that it's hard to miss but other times on the Interstate we miss it completely giving it that "camouflaged" notion in amongst the building and bridges... of course we may just be looking in the wrong place too...keeping one's eyes on the road is an upmost priority... which should go without saying. Portland is indeed a weird place and that is one of the reasons that I love it so much. It's quirkiness and art oriented drive is the "weirdness" I am referring to which makes this sign highly relatable to me. Anything that can make you lovably eccentric. Of course there is the weird element where it can delve into creepy but most people can flesh out as to what is purposeful and with intent as opposed to the opposite. I consider myself to be a weirdo and people have accused me of just that throughout my life and it's something I learned pretty early on that it's a thing to be embraced rather than treating our uniqueness and eccentricities ( the harmless kind) as a crutch, burden or handicap. I remember when I was a fairly new transplant to the Pacific Northwest there was a friendly rivalry that I would hear off and on as to what was the weirdest city in America. Austin, Texas and Portland were neck to neck and from what I heard Portland won out but of course I haven't been to Austin in a very long time and before I ever heard of the rivalry so maybe down there they say they are the victors. I may find out when I go there later this Spring. But for me seeing this sign whenever I come across it is an enduring thing and I feel like I am with my tribe... both in Portland and the Pacific Northwest.
