Good nights out. Excellent DJs sometimes the soundsystem is a bit weak but still better than anything else on the seafront.

Medusa Bar - Strawberry Mojito

I rather like this place. Its got a kind atmosphere, and it uses its slender design to its benefit,…read moreso that the bar runs around half way down, encouraging a semi dystopia sci-fi kind of vibe thats not at all alienating. As is always the case, you're rewarded for drinking ale, which is a little cheaper than lager pints. But whatever you choose, you won't be buying to get trashed. Its not that kind of place... Its good to go for a social, slow drink or two, or for a relaxed chill out. The blend of contemporary styles, from the bar stools and cushioned bench along the wall, to the mirror balls and coloured lights blends very very pleasingly with older details, like wooden panelling, shelves of books and a traditional bar layout. Small things make it feel special too, such as bringing round candles as it starts to get dark... I know its only a minor detail, but it made sitting in Medusa Bar fell special and unique... I like it a lot here... especially seeing as they play albums through from start to finish, instead of chopping and changing the whole time.

Medusa is a step up from most of the other bars in the area, being a bit less low-class than some of the other drinking places in the area, and generally cheaper and more pleasant to relax in. If you've just been for dinner and need a place to sit down afterwards, Medusa is a great alternative to heading too far back into town, especially if the weather's a bit naff. Medusa is hard to define, as it mixes much of the pub atmosphere with more of a wine-bar-chill-out seating arrangement and the like. It generally works very well: the prices are cheap, and the atmosphere is very friendly and relaxed. This is a great place to perch on a cushion and let the world spin by; not exactly a rarity in Brighton, but certainly in this area. If you're looking for a good chill-out place in the area, Medusa may be a great place for you to sit: it is just worth remembering that the crowd that like this area will likely make this place less relaxed later into the evening.

They also have a mystery light and dark beer selection that changes regularly, which they reveal once the cask or keg is finished. There's almost always a selection of Kernel, Partizan and Beavertown beers, in addition to some fine Belgian brews, like Delirium Tremens. The only reason I haven't added a 5th star is that a few more kegs would not go amiss here. Oh, and most importantly, they have deep fried gherkins that are FLIPPING DELICIOUS. Their chips are great too, but deep fried gherkins. Fried pickles. yes yes yesssss. The bar staff and proprietor (proprietrix, really) are friendly and fun (I suggest going during Oktoberfest for lederhosen looks and some great German keg brews) and it's a welcome addition to the growing craft beer community here in Brighton.

We got to taste some of the beers before we decided as well and were explained what they tasted like as well, which I like. The place might get a bit crowded since its not the biggest one in the world, but it was a cozy little place and I would love to go here if ever in Brighton again. Did not have the time to stay for long, but I liked what I saw. They also to quiz and have a selection of board games if you are into that. Oh yes, they also do burgers and some sides, from the menu it felt tasty, but we didnt try any of their food, so I cannot tell. All in all, glad we walked in on this place. You do not have to be a beer geek to go here or add all your beers to untappd, but its a place where you can try a lot of different beers for sure.

Reputed to be Brighton's smallest pub, it has two small rooms either side of a central bar, serving a couple of real ales, and the usual range of lagers, wines and spirits. The decor is plush and cosy - rather like the inside of a theatre. This is appropriate, as the walls are covered with hundreds of old theatre posters and signed photos of theatre performers. (Or should that be 'artistes'?) It's reputed that Laurence Olivier (among others) once drank here. The staff are very friendly, and it attracts a loyal following of (mostly) gay men, although it's not exclusively gay. A perfect spot to escape from the winter gales on Brighton sea-front.

The seats are of faded pinkish velvet and the air somehow stuffy as though thick with back stage stories from days that have long since come to pass. It's not going to be everybody's cup of tea, but if you've ever watched the fast show's Arthur Atkinson story and aside from the comedy been taken in by the romance of 1950's theatre this place is well worth a trip. The drinks selection's not bad either it has the usual standards and last trip a made there I enjoyed some Harveys Sussex best and marvelled with complete ignorance at the signed monochrome photos across the back wall.

After a winning streak of good dining experiences in Brighton, thanks to places found on Yelp or…read moresuggested by other yelpers, on our last day we decided to start wandering around the town and try our luck with a place we'd never heard before. We stumbled upon this place totally by accident, and to be honest with you, from the outside it looks like a pretentious fancy pub, with fancy décor and not an awful lot of good food. Well, the place HAS fancy décor, It's kind of flashy and I would usually avoid such place. But what the hell. We were seated on the balcony upstairs, we had a view of the isle-bar serving smoking cocktails (literally smoking, by the way) and I thought I had better order something hard to mess up, just in case my prejudice is right and food there wasn't going to be all that much. So we ordered a baked Camembert, a cheese board (what do you mean that's too much cheese? Sorry, can't hear you over the sound of this Stilton feasting in my mouth), and the only burger in the menu. I'm going to say it now: that was THE best burger I've had in the UK, and second best only to one I've had abroad. The bun was perfect: soft with crunchy-from-grilling edges, the cheese was melted AS IT SHOULD BE, the patty thick and juicy, it didn't fall apart despite the amount of goodness in it so I could use my hands like I'm meant to. The burger alone wins half of the stars I'm giving this place, the other half being the amazingly friendly staff, and quick and prompt service. The MINUTE I am back in Brighton, there's another one of those burgers with my name on it. Seriously, go have that burger.

The decor is pure class, funky and modern and so much to see. There are lots of different levels and seating areas, each with a different feel. The place attracts a good mix of people, but all pretty high standard. I think the evening has a smart dress code of no trainers or scruffy jeans. The music is brilliant. A complete mix of music jumping all over the decades. There is a big screen showing the videos too which can be quite entertaining. There is a massive bar in the middle of the bottom floor, so easy to get too. The only thing is it slightly dominates people at the bar and less dance space. Get there early if going on a Saturday night as it always gets packed and turns into a one in one out queue. The venue is only small, but makes a good atmosphere because of it. People will start to think I am obsessed with toilets in my reviews, but this has the best women's toilets I've seen in Brighton. Go have a look! I also ate a cooked breakfast here on a Sunday lunchtime and it was top notch. I expected it to be expensive but it wasn't. And to eat in such lush surroundings with very polite and smart staff made me feel like I was in a classy restaurant. Go and check it out if you get a chance is my advice.

The Metropole Bar is located on Brighton's seafront and serves the Hilton Brighton Metropole hotel,…read moreit is split across two sections, the 1890 area where breakfast is served and the main restauraunt for casual dining. After an awful stay at the hotel the night before in a room I found to be really basic, uncomfortable, dirty and basic, with multiple hygiene standards in the room, I really hoped breakfast would be different, a saving grace if you will from a stay which was so bad. I am a man who is not afraid to say when I am wrong, and here I was wrong. The breakfast area is hideous, old-fashioned and not very well thought out with ramps and stairs everywhere, making it quite a distance and awkward to get from the buffet area to your table, with hot drinks downstairs and cold drinks upstairs, it followed no layout, it was just a hideous mess. The staff also seemed really unhelpful, after being sat down, no one offered to get me any extras or explain how the buffet works, which I would have certainly needed. My problems ordering extras continued with the egg station being unmanned, causing me to have to wait for a chef which had gone AWOL. Again this is ridiculous, if you have to order omelettes with an egg chef, surely they should be on the front cooking, rather than hidden in the back for over 10 minutes? Eventually, I managed to get my omelette and unlike the scrambled eggs, it was really unscrambled, it tasted like a bland, plastic, cheesy disgusting mess, and it didn't look too great either. The rest of my breakfast also was really poor, I found the beans to be a little off in flavour and hard, the scrambled eggs were really overseasoned and the poached eggs were far too runny and watery, they were undercooked. The selection of tea was okay, they had multiple teabags but the brands and ones used were basic and low quality compared to other Hiltons. A hideous breakfast area in terms of overall layout and setup, and even the service and food. This made a stay already one of the worst I've had in the Hilton brand, even worse which I didn't think was possible after finding shit coloured and shaped stains, and blood in my shower with the staff refusing to sort it out. 1*

I let Cat, the booking manager, know the situation, and she was a wizard at making sure everyone had the food that they ordered. We had a room upstairs to ourselves, and everyone loved the food and service. We all got what we had pre-ordered with Cat, and the people who didn't preorder were proffered dinner in a timely fashion. The food was great! I got the tomato tart and the beef cheek. I had never had a tomato tart before but really enjoyed it, and I thought the beef cheek was very tender. Other people raved about the fries. There were lots of vegetarian and vegan options. Drinks were good! I had a cocktail called "The Bees Knees," which I really liked. There are plenty of beers on tap, and the waitstaff gets around to bar belly-uppers quickly. The space is amazing. There's a second story, rooftop courtyard, and a large downstairs area for dancing, live music, picture taking, and a brewery/beer store attached. As someone who loves lots of diversions and micro-vibes within a bar, I really enjoyed bopping between all of these areas. What better way to finish off the night than to catch a trio downstairs playing motown and rock? These guys were terrific: the bass player/singer was getting the crowd dancing, and the guitar player and drummer were seamlessly providing a groovy beat. This band is good enough for a high cover and the Mesmerist brought them in on a Thursday night, no cover. Thanks for everything, Mesmerist!

As it is central, it is pretty much always busy - and particularly in the evenings - but it doesn't take long to get served as the staff are efficient. The decor is really rather lovely.
