History
Established in 1913.
The first Patricia Theatre was located in a narrow, woodframe building near the Mill gates and was named for Princess Patricia in 1913. The "new" building was opened in November, 1928 and was designed by Henry Holdsby Simmonds, a Vancouver architect noted for designing the Stanley Theatre as well as many of the early PNE buildings. The Patricia Entertainment Company has operated continuously for over 100 years, bringing cinema, vaudeville acts, boxing matches, talent contests, fashion "trunk" shows, and live concerts to the community. Active restoration of some of the more distinctive elements of this heritage building, like the atmospheric murals, as well as creating an enormous rose garden adjacent to the building, has made it a popular venue for weddings and reunions in addition to the films and live entertainments that are offered 364 days each year. The community has invested in the most up to date digital projection equipment and sound system, ensuring the Theatre's future.
Meet the Business Owner: Ann N.
My son and I "adopted" the Theatre in 2002 when it was in danger of being lost to the community. Having been literally raised in the movie theatres of Los Angeles and Orange counties during the 1940's and 1950's, this was very much a "homecoming" for me. Brian has been a theatre technician and stage carpenter for many years, and it's his ability to fix anything that tries to fall apart on us in this 85 year old building that has enabled us to restore the building and grounds, operate 364 days a year and make the transition from elderly ( but reliable) 35 mm projection equipment to the new digital environment, and to expand the possibilities for live entertainment by sensitively modifying the stage. Most years we support the theatre's operations by our work in our other businesses of bookkeeping and picture framing, respectively, and can still make time for active involvement in projects within the arts community. The huge rose garden is my special contribution to the neighbourhood.
