Tash tori isn't like any if those places. For a small shop it has almost everything a crafter might need in small amounts. If you ask any of the staff for suggestions about some weird project you're working on, from making a card, to colouring the face of a puppet, they'll come up with very helpful suggestions, and you can tell straight away that they aren't offering you the highest priced option for the sake of it. It's the best arts and crafts shop I've found outside of America, and certainly one of the best in the Sussex area.

They stock a few balls of wool, some coloured papers and cards, stickers, and so on. It doesn't appear to be terribly expensive, and they also hold some events/classes there; there was a poster in the window advertising an upcoming card making demonstration.

This is a nicely put together fabric shop selling heavy woven cotton fabrics from India. They sell…read moremattress ticking, and deckchair fabric. They also sell a few things made from the fabrics, including some shirts for about £30, some gorgeous bags at around £40, and some handwoven baskets. The fabrics are mostly in quite neutral colours, you wont find any garish patterns in this shop. The man in the shop started out very friendly, especially as I showed an interest in the shirts. However, I tried one on, decided I didn't actually like it that much, and then he got really sulky. It's often the problem with independent shops, that the person serving you has such a vested interest in you actually buying something that the experience of shopping there can feel a bit pressured. Perhaps this place is not so good for a browse, but if you know that you need some good quality woven cotton, it's a good place to head.

I bought a beautiful lightweight linen for a shirt that was very good quality. Also some fabrics for upholstery, linen, cotton and mattress ticking. Quite a few neutral colours but also some colours. I expected it to be small, but actually it expands down the length of the north wing of Southover Grange House. It is a shop/gallery which sells the work of the Sussex guild, a group of designers artists and craftspeople, whose members live and work in Sussex and the surrounding area. The various artists' and designers' work for sale includes pottery, jewellery, furniture and art. It ranges in price and style, from homey crockery painted with cartoon-y chickens, to elegantly painted silk clothing, to wooden furniture for upwards of two grand a piece. The guild also runs classes, such as how to make fused glass jewellery, or turn wooden bowls, or do quilting. To inquire about courses you can telephone or visit the shop.

With everything from embroidered cards and pictures, to hats, bags, clothes, gorgeous jewellery, glasswork, workwork (the wooden bowls are amazing, but you do pay for their beauty!), paintings, furniture. A lot of it is a bit out of my price range i have to admit, but its very inspiring to look round and see what people have crafted out of various materials. Its the sort of place that leaves you wanting to go home and make something!

The aisles are nice and wide, which is ideal for those with buggies or wheelchairs, or just those who dislike being in a cramped shop with people barging past you. There is also a balloon service offered which is where the company excels. They can provide the run-of-the-mill 50th birthday balloons but also offer a balloon decorating service which would add a touch of originality to your birthday, engagement or wedding party. The ladies who work in the shop are always nice too, which is a great asset, especially on a typical rainy Lewesian day.

Mojo is a tiny gift shop on the main street in Lewes. In comparison to the numerous other shops of…read morethis elk, Mojo is definitely on the cheaper side. Yes, a lot of it is useless tat, although I'm desperately trying to think of somebody who would appreciate a beany hat with an attached beard, or a selection of stick-on mustaches! They do have a great selection of quality gift cards that are a little different from the norm, and there were some beautiful teacups in the window with a very funky bird design. I resisted them on this occasion, but if any one wants to get them for me for Christmas they would make me very happy!
