I am one who also scour through the cyberspace world in search for local reporting news specifically within my borough - Queens, NYC. I receive daily email newsletters for Queens and find it informative and resourceful for many years. It does appear to contain a slew of stock photos and articles written by first-year journalism students. Patch Media's daily email newsletters are bombarded heavily with large ads and pop-up ads which makes reading and culling through their website very annoying and irritating. I have had the Patch App for years. However they used to have a neighborhood chat where you could connect with other neighbors. All of a sudden it was gone from the app. I contacted Patch news customer service and they told me they got rid of that option because a lot of people were going through Facebook. A lot of people, including myself do not go on Facebook so I'm quite disappointed they got rid of the neighborhood chat. I ended up deleting the app. That's pretty sad. I don't know why they couldn't have left that neighborhood chat in the app for those of us who don't use Facebook. read more

Like any online user, I can easily scour for news from around the world. But sometimes I want local news. One new choice is Patch, brought you me by America Online (AOL). I get a daily email from Patch for both Albany and Walnut Creek. In the Bay Area, Patch also currently serves Danville, Lamorinda, Pleasanton, Mill Valley, San Anselmo/Fairfax, San Rafael, San Ramon, and soon Clayton and San Bruno. The logo is a "Patch" of grass and my sites take me to news stories about city government, sports, police report logs, and community events. Freelance submissions are welcome. Also featured is a map that marks locations mentioned in articles, photo galleries, links to social networking sites (for news tips) and of course reader comments. Patch officials say they believe they can cover these communities with a low-cost model: Each site has one full-time editor who works long hours and at modest pay. Others opine that Patch is less about journalism and more about AOL reinventing itself from Internet service provider to a content producer. This reader also wonders about the revenue side of this business model. In any case, both the Albany and Walnut Creek sites are a good and informative read. I've also lived in Albany for years, and am impressed with not only the coverage, but picking various information tidbits of which I had no idea. As for the WC, Martha's doing a great job, but I miss Crazy in Suburbia more. read more

Patch is basically a low quality content farm. They frequently post misinformation, clickbait, and sensationalized stories. They're not even local. If you look around even a little bit, you'll probably see lots of stock photos and out of date screenshots from Google Maps/Street View in their articles--which they use because they don't actually visit the neighborhoods they write about. read more

Patch has loyal readers and fans because they make local new engaging, easy to read, and build community. They are dedicated and want to relate to readers. I think it's a good company. Someone I was talking to today that I asked about Patch said, "I love Patch!" I think they are a great for neighborhood news and events. read more

Patch Media is strangely opaque. You cannot view local news if you don't live somewhere, even if you plan to travel there. You cannot submit news to their headquarters for dissemination nationally. Someone at the top is producing stories that the local writers then add a few points to, because I see identical stories appear in news searches. But Patch offers no single way to reach them when those mass coverages have inaccuracies. Even some of the localized versions of those mass coverages cannot be corrected because no reporter or email is listed. I don't trust any media that act as a one-way closed-door system. read more

I wish I had read the reviews about advertising with the Patch before I signed a contract. Do not waste your marketing dollars. I signed a year contract and it has more of a donation. I have not received a return on investment and when I called to discuss my analytics they insisted I was receiving clicks. That did not translate into business. I have had them for over 6 months and nothing. After six months you should have the ability to opt out. Again, this was not worth the money. Local yes but no value added. read more

PATCH gives local daily print media the competition it badly needs. In the 21st Century most people rely on electronic media to get their news whether computers or TV. No one has time to read newspapers who want to charge you for the newspaper to read the ads they sell to advertisers who buy ads thinking you will buy the paper and pay? to read them. How did this mess ever get started? And you don't have to wash your hands every time you finish reading The Patch. I gave the Patch/AOL Advertising 1 star, because I could not give them anything less. Do not waste your money advertising with the Patch or any one of AOL's advertising companies. We signed a 1-year contract with The Patch and have been extremely disappointed with what we were provided and with the terrible customer service we have received from the sales people as well as their management. We were promised several very specific items during the sales presentation, which were not delivered. After one month and over $1,200 out of our pockets, we requested that our contract be cancelled s a result of not receiving what we were promised and paying for. Their contract clearly states that it may be cancelled if there is a material breach of the contract by either party. We have several emails from the sales people and those in management acknowledging that we did not get what we were sold and promised, yet they refuse to cancel our contract. They have charged us in excess of $4,500 since our first request to cancel and still insist that their contract cannot be cancelled. Save yourselves the money and headaches involved with advertising with any one of the Patch's community websites or with any AOL owned company. I am very happy to provide any and all documents related to this complaint to anybody considering paying to advertise with them. read more
