The bar owner is a total fan of the Texas Tornadoes and anything Texan. He's a Finn, but has traveled to the Lone Star State several times to take in the beauty, and is bringing a little Texas to Finland! I felt like this bar would be right at home in the Texas Hill Country. Around the bar, you'll find posters depicting the likes of Doug Sahm, Dale Watson, and Willie Nelson. There are Lone Star flags up over the register! God Bless Texas! The owner is a bigger Texas Tornadoes fan than I am, and I love their stuff- I thought I knew all their songs, but they've worked some Texas Tornado references into the bar that even I had to stop and think on. On Monday nights, they hold a jam session (no cover!), where local musicians get together and jam on a country/rockabilly rhythm, and crank out the jams. The best was hearing Johnny Cash sung with a Finnish accent! They have an extensive beer and liquor list, and the staff is friendly. The place feels safe, and clean. There are plenty of places to sit, along with some slot machines. They offer the national beer of Finland on draft, Karhu, but most of their best beers are micro-brews from a bit further north in Finland- amazing IPAs. The prices are quite reasonable, and it's warm inside. I had an absolute blast hanging out here, and reminiscing of Texas with the owner- he brought out his guitar and jammed out some acoustic Texas Tornado music. I'll certainly be back next time I'm in Helsinki!

They immediately responded in Russian, and brought me a Baltica. Aaahh- reminds me of Moscow. The bartender was really a local, who is in the local Russian Language Club, where they meet up here to periodically discuss Russian cinema, books and so forth. While here, you're sure to hear about many Russian thoughts and ideas- they speak of revolution! It's a great place for an American to get some alternative viewpoints on the "system." By your third Russian Standard you're sure to be joining with the workers of the world to unite! The bar is small, and authentically decorated in drab Soviet accouterments. They have authentic Russian LPs behind the bar, and a sign from a defunct Soviet airline. Even the paintings have that kind of weird Soviet charm. They have 3 kinds of Baltica, as well as the cheaper Carlsberg Beer from the tap. Don't expect a Siberian tour of beers here- they have the basics and that's all. Don't be a greedy capitalist wishing for more beers than you can sample. It's a great place to people watch here- don't mind those burly guys in the corner in slick shark skin suits and their hair all slicked back- the Russian that they're quickly speaking to each other in hushed tones is only friendly. It's a little hard to find this place, as there's no flashy neon sign, or any sign at all, for that matter. It's a place that I found hidden behind an unmarked glass door covered in curtains next to the Mexican cantina, Corona.

Order a Baltika and shot of vodka and just enjoy the fabulous ambiance. Pro tip: they stock Żubrówka, a delicious Polish bison grass vodka that is a little hard to find. Drink it here.

In fact, they only have a few. Meat or veggie dog, served on a short bun, covered in wasabi mayo and Sriracha ketchup, with crispy fried onions. Amazingly delicious. I swear, you might be able to eat 100 of these dogs, 'cause they're not very big- but they pack in the flavor. They also serve craft cocktails. With an aperitif cocktail on tap (never seen that one before!) they can make all kinds of crazy mixologist concoctions. I opted for the beer- which was very cheap, but it came out in a half-pour. Perfect for last call. The interior looks like an Ed Hardy Japanese shirt factory exploded. They have weird prints of Japanese tattoos, and Asian street art that's interesting to check out. The place is welcoming, and the staff is friendly- they obviously know their cocktails, with homemade ingredients and properly sized chunks of ice in the proper cups.

The service was extremely nice and friendly. We loved the veggie dog - although it was quite light, it was very tasty and had lots of cilantro, other spices and salted peanuts in it. Nothing in it was hot and it was mere a bun with some filling, but it was lovely anyway. There are nice drinks with funny names and some Asian beer in the list too. The prices are pretty high and if you are very hungry, the hot dogs and kimchi won't really fill your stomach - but I really recommend tasting! Huge thanks for the music which wasn't playing too loud in the "backroom" where we were sitting in. We really were able to chat with each other without shouting over the music - this is rare in pubs and worth of praise. This was my first visit but I will definitely come back. There are only few places with this kind of atmosphere in Helsinki.

The dark, contemplative place is a perfect embodiment of their films, brought to life as a Mexican bar. Apparently, this is the Finnish movie director's view of a NYC pub, with a Mexican twist. The bar tenders don't speak Spanish, but they do have their namesake beer in bottles! They offer a brand of tequila I'd never heard of, and I like to think I know about tequila. But the beers were cold- the best option seemed to be the stuff on draft. There were plenty of pool tables open when I went, so if you wanna rack 'em up, this is a good place to do so. They offer free wifi too! Out front, be sure to bask in the warming glow of the space heaters! The place was clean, and the service was nice. They looked confused when I tried to hablo mi Espanol, and I looked even more confused when they replied in Finnish. But we settled on English and cervezas, and everything worked out just fine. So while it has the appearance of a steampunk-themed dive bar, they know how to make a good drink. There was a 3€ entry fee/coat checking. The steam themed decor was scant, at best, and the service was lackluster. Many of us did not get drinks for half an hour. Despite the music (the live DJ was on top of his game) this bar receives a 1 star due to an inexcusable flaw and service policy. While at the steam bar, I wanted to take a break and use my steamer (an electronic cigarette.) They do not have a smoking room, so smokers are to go outside. I went to the coat-check with my ticket, (late October in Helsinki), and told them I'm going to step outside and return. I was informed of a policy they have, not to return jackets but instead to loan out a thin 'blanket' to smokers. Not only was I adverse to the idea of sharing a blanket with every previous bar patron who wanted to step outside, but my personal vaporizer was in my jacket. When I informed the two people at the coat check of this, I was told that I "could go buy cigarettes at the bar." After making it clear that I want my vaporizer from my jacket and that I do not want to buy cigarettes, that the purpose of me having a personal steam machine is to prevent me from smoking cigarettes, they agreed to release my jacket to me. At a cost of an additional 3€. This is not a joke, and after being polite more than long enough I even began to argue the point of jacket extortion to no avail. I was told "every time I want to touch my coat, it will cost an additional 3€. As a line formed behind me, I eventually told them that I'll take my jacket, and pay the fee upon return. As a matter of principle I did not return, and missed the rest of my friend's birthday. This bar had a lot of potential, but poor hygiene, rude staff, greedy management and terrible rules made creating a yelp account worth the effort.
