The restaurant is cozy but not crowded or tight. Atmosphere relaxing and not too loud but also not overly formal. Great service and the food was amazing. I had a delicious pork ragout pasta and my wife had the seafood ragout. Both were delicious. I was super jealous of my friend's pasta carbonara. Did I mention the excellent wine selection? We were pleased with the D&G Tancredi we selected. Next time I'm in Basel I will definitely come back!

Basel is known world-wide for small-er local corner pubs and restaurants. Other towns have drafty holes-in the wall. Others have a dark bar with two tables. Basel combines bars + refined food restaurants into one. Like Sommereck! Sommereck is German for 'Summer Corner'. The large. beer that the bar tender served was ice cold, served in a new, pristine, and clean glass and best of all: fully filled. The tables have table cloths and it's a very upscale, clean and fancy dining experience. They have coatracks. They offer newspapers. My French 'Burgundy-Style' cordon bleu was soo tender, filled fat and hefty with a delicious Gouda and heaps of ham and other cheeses. The salad was pristine, hand cut in the kitchen - the dressing light and delicious. This is an excellent Swiss restaurant for meetings, social outings and get-togethers. The food is way above average. The staff friendly. It's bright and homey. Great beer corner for a hefty and clear poured Swiss or German brew on cold afternoons or hot days! Sommereck's service was friendly and competent. There seemed to be a good rapport between the staff and the guests. I could well imagine Sommereck being a regular spot for those living in the 'hood. Our food came out both reasonably quickly and appropriately hot--always a good thing. I ordered one of the many gnocchi dishes on the menu, alla bolognese. To all you Americans: the shape of the gnocchi reminded me of a tater-tot. It's silly, but I found the look of them amusing. The taste of the dish was quite good, but almost a bit too savory. The hubs ordered pizza with ham and a fried egg in the middle. The runny yolk made for good 'gravy' and I helped myself to a bit of chewy/crispy crust with which to sop up some of the egg. The crust was thin yet robust enough to not become soggy under both the sauce and cheese. I was duly impressed and so was the hubs. Sommereck, appropriately named, is housed on the ground floor of a charming, old, corner apartment building. I quite enjoyed its high ceilings and large windows. The lighting, however, was a bit too bright for my liking. The resto, too, boasts a rather large outdoor eating area that would be great for groups. Our visit saw cloudy skies and cold temps, so we opted for indoors, but there were a few brave souls out back enjoying wine and a chat. First, though, the good things: the setting is charming and comfortably classy; that means it is not stuffy or pretentious. The table decor is elegant and simple, enhancing the food through its simplicity and style. The wine list is not huge but proposes some excellent choices from France and Italy at fair (for Switzerland) prices. But especially the selection from Spain is very noteworthy and surprises in quality and originality. We chose the suggested 6 course chef's dinner. Starting with an outstanding duck liver appetizer convincing us with high quality and refined taste. The main course consisted of an original and rarely offered rooster (no, not chicken!). It was cooked to perfection with a wonderfully crispy skin and most succulent meat. Excellent. Unfortunately, the two preceding dishes, truffled ravioli and baby lobster in soup, were overly salty. Perhaps the chef's salt gauge was off because the restaurant only opened the second day after the New Year's break. As the execution of the dishes besides the salt rush was flawless, we give him the benefit of the doubt. No benefit of the doubt however applies to the way-below average cheese selection. First, not a single surprising or exquisite cheese was on offer amidst the pedestrian selection of Munster, Stilton, Camembert and Vacherin. Second, our cheese "companion's" knowledge was so subpar that we were utterly perplexed at her complete absence of passion for the subject. Please, do not let a beginner insult the diner's intelligence and patience with not even knowing the most basic of facts about the cheeses offered. The dessert was an unmemorable peanut infused chocolate cake strip that was of high quality but somewhat unexciting. The tea and the espresso were lackluster in delivery, but at least were offered by the house as an apology for the salt rush in the ravioli and lobster dishes. We think that the team can do better since the chef and the lady of the house are both highly regarded and otherwise most cordial and welcoming. We might give them another chance sometime later this year. P.S. We don't know whether there is an English translation of the menu as we forgot to ask.

Worried that I didn't have vegetables, he suggested he make me a small side of ratatouille... which was almost better than the main! Great food, great wine selection, great service!
