Where do you go? VAPIANO of course! This is actually a chain restaurant directly from Italy and in Italian, Va Piano means 'go slowly'. So I'm guessing they are poking a bit of fun at 'fast food'. But this is a sort of fast food restaurant - but where everything is made fresh, to order, right in front of you. So a bit of dinner theatre thrown in for free! Even though the menu is the holy Italian trinity - Pizza, Pasta, Salads; that's where 'normality' ends. I knew this was something unique as soon as we entered. We were stopped at the door and each person was handed what looks like a credit card. We found a table (these are big, banquet style and you may end up sharing with others), grabbed a menu and planned our attack. This is self serve - once you decide what you want - you take your credit card to one of the food stations - Pizza, pasta or Salad. The menu was only a guide - we were able to customize everything based on the fresh ingredients available. I was happy with the Capricciosa Pizza as is (my favourite toppings of black olives, artichokes, mushrooms and prosciutto) but my Aunt wanted a light, sauce free pasta. The pasta is fresh - not dried. And there is a glass wall in front of the pasta extruder - great fun for the kiddies to watch the pasta being made. In addition to picking your sauce and toppings - you also have at least a dozen pasta shapes to choose from as well. She choose tagliatelle with aglio and olio with some sautéed shrimp and spring onions. She loved being able to watch everything being made in the wok and loved that she was asked how much oil, how much garlic...... She did think the portion was too large for her to finish but it was so good, she cleaned her plate! (darn no leftovers for us!!!). While I was waiting for my pizza (pizzas take a bit longer so you get a buzzer) I headed over to the salad station for a rocket and parmaggiano salad to share with the group. The food stations meant everyone in our group could have something different, using their own card. Drinks are available at each station or at a central bar (which also houses the desserts). Throughout the meal you can get more food and drink - just hand over your card. When you leave, each person must turn in a card. It is possible to just use one card during the meal and pay as a whole - and then the other cards will show a 'zero' when you come to pay. Or, use individual cards - which can be totalled into one bill - or if you are with a group of friends - it makes paying for yourself so much easier! This isn't 'fine' dining but it is fresh, fun, easy and tasty.

Food: The food was really good especially the appetizers and the desserts! The two pastas we had were really good quality and perfectly al dente but taste-wise it wasn't that special. I actually don't order beef filets in restaurants because mostly the quality is not special, the cook over cooks it and it's over priced. Apulia also had a beef filet as one of their main courses and it costs 51.- but i can tell you they really know how to make filets! Really good quality and perfectly cooked! There was nothing they could have done better. Service: Very authentic and friendly service. The cook and a waiter are from Apulia! Ambience: It is located in the previous restaurant "charon" right next to the Spalentor. Traditional restaurant with a lot of wood.

As it was my mother's birthday dinner I splurged and had as Antipasto the Burrata with Parma ham and cherry tomatoes. The Burrata, which is a mozzarella from that region, tasted great and was creamy and light. Eating it with the ham and cherry tomatoes, which were on a bed of rucola, tasted so good and was a nice entry into the dinner. As first course I chose the Agnolotti (kind of ravioli ) filled with minced veal and sage. The Agnolotti were so tasty and they almost melted in my mouth. So good! Finally, as second course I chose the fish of the day which was sea brass in a coat of sea salt accompanied by grilled vegetables. The owner of the restaurant was so kind and did slice the fish in nice fillets. The fish was well cooked and was a delight to eat together with the crispy grilled vegetables. I accompanied this with a bottle of Negroamaro Salento. The wine had a great and full bouquet that it enhanced the whole dinner. After this I just had no room for s dessert and opted for a grappa Giare Amarone. Wow. A great ending to a superb dinner. As a summary, this restaurant and the nice waiters is on my radar and will be soon revisited again.

The restaurant is cozy but not crowded or tight. Atmosphere relaxing and not too loud but also not overly formal. Great service and the food was amazing. I had a delicious pork ragout pasta and my wife had the seafood ragout. Both were delicious. I was super jealous of my friend's pasta carbonara. Did I mention the excellent wine selection? We were pleased with the D&G Tancredi we selected. Next time I'm in Basel I will definitely come back!

Food: Very good, authentic cuisine. * My only disappointment in the food was the lack of a mortadella wrapped in pasta dish that they advertise all over their website, including on a video. BUT they no longer offer this. It's what I wanted to order:( For dessert, we had Zabaglione. I love this dish normally when combining the thickness of this sauce with fresh fruit, especially berries. This one was very light and was poured over a very small portion of gelato and while good, it wasn't what I was expecting. Service: Here was good but it was sometimes tough communicating. Finally, our leftovers that we wanted boxed up (aka take aways), were thrown away. Not good. All in all, would I go back? Sure but would try different dishes and hope I got a different server.
