Service was excellent and I have to give a shoutout to Diego who checked us in to the hotel and served us at the restaurant. Knowledgeable about the food and gave perfect descriptions of the descriptions of the meals with recommendations that were true. The atmosphere was just what I wanted. Close to Cortina but outside the busy business district. It sits on a hill in a green pasture surrounded by the beauty of the Dolomites. It is very quiet at night. Rooms are rustic with modern facilities. Very clean. Would love to come back.

They go above and beyond to make your experience here convenient and relaxing. We were welcomed with a nice refreshing, nonalcoholic drink. The spa experience is wonderful. The hotel comes equipped with both wet and dry saunas and relaxation room. The large pool and jacuzzi are both at perfect temperatures. The jacuzzi transitions from indoors to outdoors. The hotel room was also very nice. We were welcomed with fruits, snacks, and champagne. I enjoyed waking up to the morning view everyday. The breakfast is outstanding.

By American standards, these rooms are small, and wifi should be free. But Brixen isn't in…read moreAmerica, is it? Seriously, the hotel scene in Brixen is pretty damn expensive, so I was really happy to find this family-run hotel. It definitely is a budge hotel, but it's a nice, comfortable place to spend a night or few. The location right across from the Acquarena and just around the corner from a bus stop is great. One *could* schlepp one's baggage and crap to the train station (Brixen can be crossed by foot in ten minutes), orrrrrr, one could take the bus. Your pick. I'm pretty sure all rooms are non-smoking, which is a beautiful thing in central Europe. The rooms in the back of the building tend to have balconies, which have a lovely view. The floor space is limited but the bed is spacious, which is a fair trade-off, I'd say. ;) Bathrooms have been recently renovated, as I believe most aspects of the hotel. In fact, our room was missing a refrigerator, and I'm not sure whether that's because they haven't yet been installed or the refrigerator for our room was under repair. Either way, it didn't bother me too much - I was in Brixen to enjoy myself, not to do grocery shopping. The keycard system is awesome, and will let you in late at night securely without waking a night porter, as happens at some other hotels. Breakfast is included, including coffee drinks from the attached cafe next door. I made proficient use of the spread of eggs, cakes, cereals, cheese, meats, jams, etcetera and wasn't hungry for most of the rest of the day. The only drawbacks are the €1 charge for wifi and the parking charge. I couldn't be bothered to go through the rigamarole of paying and logging in online for a €1 transaction and would rather see this automatically included in my check-in. I don't know much about the parking situation, as I didn't need it, but I understand that the parking lot belongs to or is right near the Acquarena and the rates are inexpensive. This is a great budget hotel, but I wish the wifi process would be simplified/included in the check-in.

I came to Selva Val Gardena/Wolkenstein in August 2017 and stayed at Hotel Portillo Dolomites 1966…read more My friends and I took the train from Rome to Bolzano and rented a car to Val Gardena. We took the lift up to the top and did a 12 mile hike. I should've prepared better than wear a pair of Nike Flyknits during the hike. I felt almost every piece of gravel on my sole. Around mile 7 we stopped at the Riese Haunold Hütte for lunch. Had poltena, sausage and short rib combo along with a beer. Had enough energy to do the next 5 miles. It does get busier in the afternoon and that's when the hike speed throttles with hike guides and other hikers. It's not everyday I get to hike in the Italian Alps and see the typical tourists like Florence or Venice. I think my friends and I were the only Asian hikers along the path. Haha. It was an amazing hike with a lifetime of memories and good eats and beer at the Hütte.

This is one of my favorite spots to ski in Europe (at least of the ones I have been to thus far)…read more There is a ton of terrain easily accessible from the three villages in the valley. While it may feel a bit out of the way to get there, it is totally worth it if you are planning on spending multiple days skiing there. There's a good mix of terrain and if you are looking for some challenging pitches, you will find it from time to time. On my most recent visit to Val Gardena, we stayed in Hotel Antares in Selva (winter 2012). This area is part of the Dolomiti Superski pass, so you are able to venture into other nearby areas if you are willing to do so (places like Alta Badia, Cortina, and Kronplatz are all included). Additionally, if you are looking for a day off to rest the legs, Bolzano is a relatively short bus ride away and is an interesting day trip. While in Val Gardena, if you haven't tried the Sella Ronda, it is definitely worth doing. While it is more of a circuit than a trail, which is 26km long and takes you around the massive Sella mountain. It takes nearly all day, and you have to mindful of the clock to a certain extent as lifts close at certain times and you don't want to get stuck (read: expensive cab ride). Green and orange markers take you clockwise or counter clockwise. Another option is heading over to Ortisei, which is probably the largest town in the valley and skiing some of the cruising trails over there. On a nice sunny day, you will get a great view in what feels like more wide open terrain. I spent a week skiing here in 2012 and never got bored with the terrain. We lucked out with good (not excellent) skiing conditions, but for early March it was better than expected.
