Lesson learned...good sales tactic at this location capitalizing on the upcoming USPS price hike. I didn't realize until I got home that I paid more than what the future price increase for stamps will be...for stamps I did not need. When I called, the store the manager was not understanding. She said they offer the stamps as a convenience. While I understand that, I have been to this location many times and never had this type of experience pushing stamp sales. My fault for not paying attention, however the manager response could have been more understanding or offer a solution to return them.

This location is great! They are always appropriately staffed and it's all hands on deck when a…read moreline begins to form. I never wait more than a few minutes, even if the line is out the door. They are very helpful and take extra time to assist those who may not be as familiar with technology and on-line returns. This year we had some significant life changes that surely would've impacted our taxes. I'd have…read moredone then myself otherwise, but we figured a competent CPA would make our lives a little less stressful. We were wrong. We made a 1 o'clock Thursday appointment with Pat Hanniford. When we spoke on the phone to schedule this appointment he was friendly but offered very little information beyond when to come to his office. I also had to ask HIM what informational tax materials to bring to our filing appointment. Shouldn't this have been something he began with? I didn't feel that he was very thorough in this regard and gave me a very loose idea of what he'd need. I took a half day off work and arranged for a babysitter for our afternoon appointment thinking it might be an hour or so. Running a few minutes late we showed up 3 minutes after 1 o'clock. Pat was nowhere to be found. His secretary, Kathy didn't know where he was and didn't bother to call him until we had already been waiting 10 minutes. Then she told us that he was on his way in thinking our appointment (the one that he personally scheduled) was for 2 o'clock. When we asked how far out he was they told us "maybe 4 minutes". That was a gross underestimation. We waited an additional 25 minutes, our first impression of this group growing less enchanting with each passing minute. We had a 2 month old at home that we had scheduled around so this was very inconveniencing, somewhat stressful, not to mention highly unprofessional. When he arrived he was over 40 minutes late for our appointment. Then the actual meeting took less than 5 minutes. We laid out our forms and paperwork, he looked them over, and told us he'd be in touch. Never being told how long the appointment would last nor that he could only devote 5-10 minutes to us, we felt rushed the entire 10 minutes. I later found out that I could've just dropped off the paperwork after work. The whole meet and greet with this office was abrupt and impersonal. So impersonal in fact that they didn't even bother to close the doors to the conference room we were in, allowing whomever to listen in on our personal business. Thus far, not impressed, but we decided to ride it out. At our meeting Pat had told us he'd have our taxes done by the beginning of that coming week. We never heard a thing until WE called at the end of that next week. We were then told they'd be ready sometime the following week. We never heard anything the following week again and began calling every few days leaving messages with Kathy for Pat but never getting a call back. Eventually I just emailed Pat who wrote back apologizing and scheduled us to come in to review our filing. When we arrived he was out of the office again, and came in late, giving us about 10 minutes of his time to review what he prepared. He left us with 1 of 2 options to file and we told him we needed to think about it and call with our directive early the following week. Come the next week and after 3-4 unreturned phone calls to Pat with questions we needed answered, I eventually just went to his office. He of course was not there again but "he's on his way in and he'll be here in 5 minutes" was repeated a few times by Kathy while we waited. (Be aware that this is a habit with this guy, and that his office always always says "he'll be here soon" - Plan on waiting for him every step of the way) . He actually wasn't in the office ANY of the 4 times that I or my wife went there to speak to him and didn't return a single message we left with Kathy. As it's all said and done now, I'll steer clear of this group in the future. Customer service was nonexistent and common courtesy is a reach here. It would seem that either their clientele is the weathered Brighton establishment, not considering a younger generation of client worth extending courtesy to, OR, they're just fundamentally inconsiderate.

Hiring Ms. Starla Zehr was a wise investment. IN SHORT: From our first consult in the spring at her conveniently located office in Waterford, Michigan, Starla took her time with me, asked many relevant questions and recorded lots of details on my situation. She explained my best and worst case scenario options and potential related expenses. During the final settlement conference, she threw down hard when warranted and both parties ended up agreeing well enough. Divorce ain't perfect, but it can be reasonable in the end with the right level heads to direct you. IN LONG: When I was ready to roll and file, Starla continued with the same approach and ultimately left me to make informed decisions. Not knowing what to expect with the divorce process (being fortunate enough to have my first husband die), Starla & her office manager/paralegal, Polly, made it an easier experience to understand and go through overall. They also actively worked directly with the opposing attorney and their office personnel to keep the negotiation process on track. Starla also knew when to put me in check and take a breath when things 'got real' and the Bronx girl came out in me here and there. Ultimately, I was so glad to be hands off and let them do the legal dirty work. On a personal note, I found Starla to be very kind and understanding to my particular situation with 2 small children and being in all kinds of transition. She provided much insight to what-if's and what-will's down the road in addition to very helpful practical advice for the future. After the court proceedings were over today she gave me an unexpected hug and we had a really nice chat on the loose ends. On a general, random Oakland County MI Court side note, the assigned judge overseeing my divorce (Matis) was a really happy guy despite bringing down the final ax on love gone bad x100. Like, genuinely, internally, smiling-ly throughout happy. I half-expected to be invited back for coffee and donuts and mingle amongst all the new divorcees after it was over. Weird, but pleasant considering the collective situation of everyone in the room. Anyway, SOME BEGINNER BEST DIVORCE LAWYER TIPS FOR YOU: Okay, so I was not the most ideal financial position to hire an attorney, but I managed to come up with some cash for the retainer. Let me tell you, if you are in the same position and are set to divorce, it is WELL WORTH IT to hire someone to represent your best interests and cut through the crap...your ex's and Michigan law, in general. My ex said I had absolutely no need for an attorney *insert hearty laugh here*. Seriously, get a second job and hustle in the short term if you have to and make ongoing payments. I tried to do so even while the retainer was till in effect. That tidy bundle is not going to last forever if things go sideways. You will typically get a statement every month itemizing how your retainer has been used and, and once used up, what you owe to date. Make sure to not get overly involved in emotional exchanges with the soon-to-be-ex as best as possible to keep progress alive & always try to stick to the facts at hand (it will save you on attorney fees). I tried to keep verbal exchanges to a minimum and got as much in writing as possible (email/text). I used to be a medical biller and the mantra in my department was: "If you don't get it in writing, it didn't happen". Lastly, just because you may not be getting constant updates, it doesn't mean things aren't in the works in the background. Starla & Polly were really good about replying back in a timely manner to update / FYI emails I would send. Be concise with your emails. Respond quickly when needed. Get all your paperwork, photos, copies, supporting documentation together. Sign up for Google Voice. It saves texts in perpetuity and transcribes voicemail messages that may be necessary to your case. Keep copies of everything for yourself. Sometimes some clarification and re-clarification has to take place, but that is a good thing so that everyone is on the same page in the end. Obviously, you should do your research and see a few attorneys to explore their opinions on your particular situation (lots of assets/no assets/kids/no kids/craziness/no craziness). You should feel comfortable in the bones with who you pick. Credit goes to the ex's 1st wife for the Starla "referral". When Starla's name drew a little snarl periodically throughout the relationship, I knew I had put her on my short list of attorney consultations & book an appointment. Plus, I thought it would be kind of funny. Now that YOU may be ready to put the garbage in the garbage can where it belongs, it's time to give Starla or Polly a call & cut your divorce stress in half (at least). However, I learned later that he is not the best communicator or attorney and he was always influenced by the opposing council! Moreover, he looked very nervous and uncomfortable/ lacked confidence speaking in court. He does not pay attention to the details. He was more interested in sharing my financial information with the opposing council than getting my spouse's financial disclosure. Due to his poor planning and strategies, he had a lot of trouble getting the opposing council to respond to his emails or his phone calls. My spouse changed attorneys twice and he was out lawyered by both. He made several legal mistakes costed me thousands of dollars. The divorce was final three months ago, but I am still going back and forth to court (of course with different attorney) because the divorce judgement has many loose ends he was oblivious to and I am paying dearly for his mistakes. By the way, the divorce was final and I still do not know my ex's financial disclosure. I asked him to request her bank statements two months before the divorce date. He requested them via e-Mail from the opposing council! of course she ignored his request as he was supposed to file his request through the court system. In fact, a couple of weeks before the divorce date, I asked him if he requested them through a motion, he lied and said "yes but we will not get them on time". He never did file a formal request. I am legally divorced but because of the terrible judgment of divorce, I do not feel divorced as my wife is in my house every other day due to the loose ends. Merrill' is merely a paper pusher. He made me feel so desperate, I ended up giving up almost everything in order to get out. After all the mistakes he made he charged me little over $22K. It was totally waste of money. He would run the bill by calling me to change the wording of a document when the changes do not change the substance. One advice "if you see his name RUN AWAY as fast as you can.

Everything was agreed upon between my ex and I and the divorce was handled without difficulty. So imagine my surprise when I closed on my home May 6, 2005 and found that he had put a lien on my home for what he claimed were unpaid attorney fees. The amount I "supposedly" owed was $938.08 along with $391.58, for a total of $1329.61 taken from the proceeds of selling my home. After returning home from the closing and he refused to speak with me. He refused to provide me with an itemized statement OR proof of service with my signature. I can only assume he sent any/all correspondence to one or two of the other addresses prior to purchasing my home. I would have gladly apologized to him for my fallability. After he refused to speak with me I told him that I'd take him to court. His response was to go right ahead, adding that he would sue me for filing a "frivolous" lawsuit and have me jailed. I am in the process of filing a grievance with the State of Michigan Licensing Board in Lansing. He doesn't deserve one star.
