This review is just for the Fitness Center @ Ateaze…read more The Fitness Ctr has a lot going for it, but it also has a lot of negative issues. Its was updated last year with completely new, up-to-date equipment. I've been a member @ Planet Fitness on Merritt Blvd. and MAC on Boston Street in Balto City. Equipment-wise, Ateaze beats anything @ PF and is on a par with MAC. Bear in mind, Ateaze doesn't have the array of equipment as MAC, or the # of machines, but what it has is very good. It has a leg press, a machine for leg curls and extensions, a standing elliptical, seated ellipticals, a weight bench, free weights, 3 treadmills, a machine for lat pull-downs and rowing, a contraption for stretching, and one other piece of equipment that I don't know the name of. Unfortunately it does not have a mirror, which is very important if you want to check your firm while lifting, and no space for ab/core work. The cost is $25 for 3 months -- a bargain. Now for the down side. The Ateaze Fitness Ctr has very limited hours. It's open M-F only, from 8:30 AM to 3PM. Being owned by Balto County, it is closed for every single holiday the County observes. So beyond the usual -- Xmas, Thanksgiving, New Year, July 4th, Labor Day, Memorial Day, it's also closed on Columbus Day, President's Day, MLK Day, Good Friday, Veterans Day, and New Year's Eve. You can always count of the Fitness Ctr being closed one weekday every month because of a County-observed holiday. Another disadvantage, and a big one IMO, is that the Fitness Ctr is staffed by volunteers. Being volunteers and being elderly (I'm old myself) they frequently call out, and because the Ctr director is not at all pro-active, she makes zero effort to contact other volunteers to see if one of them can cover. And she herself makes no attempt to walk 20 feet down hall and sit @ the Fitness Ctr's desk to provide coverage for 3 to 4 hours. (As if the 20 foot separation between her and the Bldg.'s front desk makes it impossible to do her job.) So in addition to the Fitness Ctr. being closed one day a month because of a holiday, you can always count on it being closed at least one day a month due to no coverage. That's a nuisance. What becomes annoying, however, is the Ctr's director lack of effort to contact Fitness Ctr users to advise them of its closure for that day. I cannot remember the # of times I've gone to Ateaze only to be told the Fitness Ctr is closed because there is no coverage. The Ctr. Dir. claims she has no way of contacting Fitness Ctr users when it's closed for lack of coverage. This is the 21st century. Every Ateaze member has to check in electronically every time he/she enters the Ctr, and then check in electronically for the Fitness Ctr. All this foot traffic data goes to Towson. Towson has the ability to send a message to all Ateaze members when the Ctr is closed for weather, and since we live in a digital age, Towson's software should be able to compile a list of members who use the Ateaze Fitness Ctr for the purposes of communicating with them when the Fitness Ctr is closed because there's no coverage. Simple communication between Ateaze and Towson could possibly rectify this. But again, the Ateaze Dir again cannot be bothered to do anything beyond sitting at her desk, so this problem continues. Long story short -- Ateaze has a lot going for it, but it also has a lot of operational procedures that need improvement. I've use the Parkville Senior Ctr and the difference between P'ville & Dundalk like night and day.
