I rented a boat here last summer and had a really pleasant experience on the water. The boats are…read moreelectric, quiet, and very easy to steer, which makes for a relaxing afternoon. The staff member who helped us was great, and the whole payment/refund process for the deposit was quick and painless.
A few things to keep in mind before you book:
Pricing: It's definitely on the pricier side. I noticed it was about 1/3 more expensive than other self-rental spots just a little further down the same canal. It's worth doing a quick price comparison if you're on a budget.
Winter Closure: Just a heads up for off-season travelers--they are closed during the winter months (usually Nov-Feb) because it gets way too cold and windy on the open water.
GPS & Navigation: While the central operators use GPS to track the boat, they don't always alert you if a specific canal is temporarily closed for maintenance. We ran into a few "no entry" signs and had to take a massive detour around Centraal Station.
The "Late Fee" Trap: Because of the closed canals, we arrived back later than planned. They are very strict about timing and we were charged for an extra hour. My advice: Head back toward the drop-off site early. If you still have 20 minutes left, just cruise around the immediate area so you're guaranteed to moor on time.
Overall, it's a solid 3 or 4-star experience. Great boats and helpful staff, but give yourself a huge time buffer for navigation so you don't get hit with extra fees.
