The park is surrounded with beautiful historic buildings, a church, famous coffee shops, ice-cream shops, and restaurants. Within the park you'll see little historic facts about it. A few years ago, the market stands were right in the park, but to avoid the abundance amount of people in one place, those stands have been moved. It was a great idea, so anyone who wants to buy souvenirs can go to the 2 floor building and spend time there. It gives those enjoying the park more free room to breathe. Being in Coyoacàn made me forget that the city was 20 minutes away. It was a lovely place to sit back and relax. Or you can observe the people dancing, playing music, or doing magic tricks. The park contains the statue to the Mexican hero, Hidalgo, and some fountains with coyotes in them. The area is landscaped nicely, with tall, tropical shrubs and shady trees. There are lots of places to sit, and watch the crowd go by. If you show up on Saturday evenings, they have a big street party where performers show up, and have puppet shows, magic tricks, jokes, and other performances. There's lots of vendors here, selling cheap handicrafts. Their prices are low, but better quality crafts can be found in the adjacent artisans' market. There's lots of great places here to hang out and relax- the fountains shoot off jets of water across statues to coyotes, and give a much needed, rejuvenating lift in the hot Mexican sun. You're not going to get hungry here - the plaza is surrounded by restaurants. The building at the end of the park is where Cortez set up his first provisional government when he invaded Tenochtitlan. It's now a place that looks out for the Coyoacan neighborhood. The Parroquia de San Juan Bautista overlooks the park, and is a beautiful church to check out. It's a lovely neighborhood - well worth a visit for people visiting the city. One of the reason it's so great? Plaza San Jacinto. The plaza is traditional, with a fountain in the center and paths leading to it from each corner and side of the plaza. With plenty of trees, benches, and people, it's a great place for a walk/stroll or to sit on a bench and listen to music or read or people watch. But the highlight of a visit to Plaza San Jacinto? Every Saturday, it hosts the Bazaar Sábado - a traditional market of hundreds of artists, artisans, and sellers of almost everything you can imagine. We were lucky to be walking through the Plaza around 6pm on a Saturday (the market is from 10am-7pm every Saturday), and it was such a treat. But on every side of the Plaza are gorgeous buildings that house shops, restaurants, and a museum (Museo Casa del Risco), making the Plaza and its surroundings a great place to spend a few hours!

The Saturday artist market in the plaza always includes a wealth of talented painters lining the pathways although kitsch and craft has crept in since tourists discovered the market. I still deeply regret not buying a fantastic almost-abstract landscape painting years ago and that stayed in my mind as I strolled through the plaza and the thin stone streets of San Ángel.

Also, Viveros de Coyoacán has the widest variety of squirrels I've ever experienced. Like seriously, I thought Google Maps was joking, but there were black, brown, red squirrels, I don't even know. They scurried up and down trees like ants. It was insane. Check out the cactus, hedge-lined paths, and open spaces. The park is impressively clean, and I'm actually learning a ton about this place through other Yelp reviews. Apparently it's a tree nursery to reforest the city. Come here for some quiet time, whether a few minutes or a few hours. Take a break from all the hubbub, and kick it with the squirrels.

It's a nice park - definitely would be great for locals who want a place to run, walk, or exercise (we saw a lot of runners in Viveros)! It's not as great of a park for tourists to explore (unlike more touristy parks - with gorgeous fountains and memorials), but it's a pretty place for a walk. We figured it was a nicer walk to go through the park to get from the center of Coyoacan to the metro station, but you can't exit wherever you like (there are certain entrance/exit points to the park). A nice place for a walk though!
