La Vera is a boutique factory cheese making company where the number one focus is "the genuine art…read moreof cheese making." With cheese making facilities on site the real attraction for punters like you and me is the La Vera retail outlet shop. The shop is open to the general public who can buy both the amazing array of La Vera cheeses along with all sorts of other gourmet treats. Visit the shop on almost any day and you'll be joined at the counter by legions of Italian ladies. In fact the chief language spoken inside the shop is Italian. Not being familiar with the language myself, I brought the tone down considerably with my Aussie strine but the whole experience made me feel like I was temporarily transported to an Italian marketplace. Of their range of products, the cheeses I recommend are the La Vera Ricotta which head cheese maker Pino says is best eaten on fresh bread and with a drizzle of honey - his version of the breakfast of champions. I love the La Vera Mascarpone. It is quite simply to die for. In fact you may want to visit your local GP first to get your cholesterol checked before eating. Their mozzarella balls both large and small, are the creamiest and most divine you could experience. And if you are a lover of blue cheese, you just can't go past the La Vera Adel Blue and the Adel Blue Spreadable. Here's a secret tip - if you go to the ABC's website for The Cook and the Chef, and search the recipes for Fig and Blue Cheese Tartlets, Maggie Beer's recipe uses the La Vera products. Shhh, don't tell!

They ARE specialists in cheese, and if you're a cheese lover you owe it to yourself to sample the range. There's everything from hard Pecorino and Parmesan to Mozarella and Bocconcini, Blue, Brie, and everything in between. I recommend the hot chilli Casalingo - I haven't had another cheese like it.

Vella Pasta is a jewel in the Campbelltown area, providing real quality pasta and sauces at a…read morefactory door price - that's easy for them to do, given they actually are a fully fledged pasta factory - for quite a while I thought the big signs out on the road advertising pasta and sauce to take home were actually something to do with the BP, up until the BP was demolished and the signs stayed. Exploration of the area yielded the factory tucked away at the back of the carpark - inside we found pasta, sauce and garlic bread for the four of us - fettucine and a creamy carbonara sauce for my wife and I, and spaghetti with lashings of meaty bolognese for the kids - all for well under $20. The pasta is fresh, gorgeous when soaked briefly in a pot of boiling salty water - the sauces are rich and plentiful (we bought two lots of pasta and sauce for two - you'd comfortably feed three from each serve). A return visit allowed me to try the vodka sauce - very, very much recommended. There's lots of off street parking nearby, even with the construction currently going on on the old BP site. Do yourself a favour and grab some really fresh pasta to cook at home, it's delicious.

However, Vella Pasta is a brilliant shop that stocks locally made pastas for everyone - including Coeliacs. They have fresh made pastas and pasta sauces available in whatever size and weight you need, garlic breads and frozen varieties. The prices are great and you can watch the staff make the pasta through a window behind the sales counter, so you know it's fresh. The result of what you make is always full of flavour and perfectly cooked on the advice of the sales staff. Don't know what to do for dinner? Vella pasta is a great, cheap idea. And yes, it's open.

As much as we all have to head to the supermarket and pick up our stock standards to cook our daily meat and two veg, sometimes we just can't be stuffed.... shopping or cooking! Answer = Sfera's Gourmet. Most know Sfera's as the function centre/restaurant near Tea Tree Plaza. The Gourmet Centre on Lower North East Road has an amazing array of noshables that will probably shorten your life expectancy, but your mouth will be stoked! From pre-packaged pasta wonders to hot and ready to munch stuffed capsicums, lasagne and other options I will hold back from mentioning in case your drool shorts out your keyboard! There is also plenty of Seafood, fresh and frozen in case you do want to cook when you get home...why would you want to cook when it is all done for you? Eh, whatever.

You can pick up a fresh meal ready to reheat for as little as $6, and it's not a skimpy meal like a frozen tv dinner from the supermarket, either. One of my favourite guilty pleasures from here is their crumbed calamari - prepared fresh on the premises, $10 worth of it feeds my family of four, and it's so crisp and light when fried well. The handmade tartare sauce they do finishes it off well, too. Everything is so fresh - I guess that comes from also handling a lot of catering - handling product well must come natural to them by now :)

I used to work in catering and have cooked many steaks in my time, SA Gourmet Meats used to one of my most closely guarded secrets! All of the usual suspects are there in more forms than you can imagine. Don't see what you want? RUBBISH! But if it isn't there it will be obtained! I always leave the store with more than I ordered or planned to buy, and I never have buyers remorse (except for the meat sweats from time to time)! Oh.....the staff are brilliant by the way!
