My experience with Park Place was less than desirable. While I think that there are some great people that work there, the upper management seems to care more about what they want than what the families want for their loved ones. The website talks a lot about patient/family rights, but when it comes down to putting it into practice, they fail miserably. I decided that I was unhappy with the current hospice company my grandmother was on...(they removed her from hospice when she was hospitalized even though it wasn't necessary- I know this because I work in hospice- if a patient is hospitalized for an unrelated reason to their hospice diagnosis they can stay on hospice).
I felt she would be better served by a hospice company like my own with people who really knew the laws and policies and people who I loved and loved me and would care for grandmother like their own family. I went to Park Place to make the necessary changes and was told that I could not switch her except to the two companies they used for hospice. I was in shock. We as a company had never been told that to my knowledge. My co-worker and I told the administrator Annie that we didn't want an exclusive contract by any means, just a one time contract for my grandmother only. We thought maybe she misunderstood. She said no, we only use these two companies. I told her it was my right to choose who I wanted for my grandmother. Annie was uncaring and unsympathetic. I wondered what interest she had in supporting the two companies she was using and why she wouldn't use us. My Executive Director even called to see if we had done anything wrong and Annie stated that we had not.
To make a long story short- she said she would check with the owner, the next day, she told me he said no also. I asked her if the community in bell county knew that they weren't allowing families to make choices for their loved ones like they had the right to do? She asked if I was threatening her... I said no ma'am... it's an honest question. I think people have a right to know that Park Place Manor isn't giving people the right to choose whichever hospice company they want. There are many companies out there. She got very upset with me and told me I could choose one of the two companies they had in their building, or move my grandmother out!! Understand that my grandmother has been at Park Place for many years and is 93 years old. Annie would rather lose her as a resident than let me choose my own hospice company! That is a nursing home with a control problem.
Sooo, I immediately moved my grandmother to Wellington Place and signed her up with my own hospice company. I have never seen her so happy and well cared for. The employees there took care of her as if she was family. They abided by my wishes as she was my family and I was her caregiver. My grandmother passed away this last March and I know that I made the right decision by moving her. She loved the new place and loved the nurses and team that I work with. She was happy and loved up until the last day on this earth. Leaving Park Place was the best decision I made. read more
