My son is graduating from Bosco in a few days and this has been a great school. Beautiful looking…read morecampus and a wonderful administration who really seem to care. He and I were not sure if he would be attending St John Bosco due to the tuition cost, although I had him take the entrance exam in December of his 8th grade year just to see how he would do. He scored high on the exam and with his exam score and references from his current and past teachers at the school he was then attending, he ended up being warded a $15,000 academic scholarship to Bosco. That helped lower the tuition cost by approximately $300 per month throughout his four years. His scholarship was possible due to a previous student from several years back who had given the money to the school so that it would be used as an academic scholarship. It seems that this was not unusual because I found that many prior students would "give back" to Bosco. That in itself says how much they loved their school. Also, many of the teachers are prior St John Bosco graduates and they really do care about their students. Like many other private schools the parents do need to do so many hours of volunteer time at the school or they can chose to just "payout" their hours. It is only 15 hours a year which was no problem for me even as a single mom. There are also four parent meetings per year which are mandatory. I liked the fact that it is an all boys school which gets together frequently with the sister school, St. Josephs in Lakewood which is an all girls school, for different functions. I feel that it being an all boys school keeps the students focused more on their studies. Non of the students that I knew of seemed to miss the fact that there were no girls in the classroom. If a Catholic education is something you desire for your child, but you feel you cannot afford tuition cost, please talk to someone at the school to see if there is a way to possibly make it more affordable. I have learned throughout the years that there is much help out there, as far as Catholic education, if you just ask.

I went in to turn in paperwork to be reimbursed for gas money . I want to put it out there the paper did not have a deadline date . The reason I went In late May because the car insurance renewed early June . Anyways , The older woman in front gave me paperwork to fill out. She told me Nancy was busy that I could make an appointment and come in later. Yeah, nancy was so busy bad mouthing and gossiping about Claudia with the blonde hair with the older woman in front . Stating they didn't like her , Very professional. I filled out the paperwork and handed it in. I barely made it to my car before I got a call from Nancy yelling at me I had missed the deadline to turn in the paperwork. She demanded to know why I had set up an appointment if that was all I needed. I couldn't believe she was treating me that way and yelling at me. I calmly answered her that was the only reason. It took everything in me to be calm and not snap back. I was worried if I snapped there would be retaliation and I wouldn't be reimbursed. She continued to yell at me and finally put me on hold. She calmly told me I could go in and she would approve my paperwork . I'm guessing someone told her to relax . Whenever I have to deal with this department I dread it . Most of the staff is rude and with a poor attitude. I urge the district to read these reviews and do something about the staffs behavior.

As a parent of a child who attends a school in the Bellflower Unified School District, I…read moreoccasionally need to seek services from the main office. My experience today was unfortunately horrible. I am assuming that the employees at this office have recently gone through some sort of safety training and that the policies of this office have changed as the entire building was in complete lockdown. All doors locked, signs saying appointments only and a electronic doorbell at the main entrance. Not knowing for sure what was going on, I rang the bell and was asked if I had an appointment. I said "no" and was greeted by a terse woman who was huffy about having to get up from her chair to open the door for me. I told her that I need to visit an office there to turn in some paperwork. How was I supposed to know that appointments were necessary now? No communication from the School District on this at all. She scolded me for not having an appointment but still let me in. I made my way to the office where I needed to turn some paperwork in. I entered and was greeted with unfriendly stares from 4 employees who were talking with each other. I was asked if I had an appointment. I said no. I said I was happy to make one but no one told me I had to make an appointment now to get services from the Bellflower Unified School District's main office. Very unfriendly looks and zero customer service as I was asked for the name of my student. I was given the paperwork necessary and started to fill it out. Meanwhile, one of the women who was working in the office came over and told me that they've been through a lot and that I should understand that the building is locked down now. I told her that there has been no communication with the customers (parents of children in this School District) and that how was I supposed to know if no one told me. Other employees chimed in and made more excuses about why appointments were necessary now. All the while I was getting dirty looks and treated poorly as if I was not supposed to be there. Finally, someone who I presume was the manager came over and shut the excuses and conversation down and apologized for the new policy. I turned in my paperwork and made my way out. All I can say is that these employees acted like scared mice in their office building and provided zero level of customer service. Dirty looks, excuses, poor attitudes and a general lack of desire to be friendly or helpful was the order of the day here. Exactly who are they supposed to be serving? The parents and the students. I think the employees of the BUSD main office need to understand why they are there and who funds their paychecks. They all need training in customer service on how to do simple things like smile, be friendly and how to not make excuses for poor policies.

When I was in 8th grade at Mayfair Middle & High School, on my very first day, I was accused of being a potential school shooter simply because graffiti on campus contained the same name as mine. There was no evidence connecting me to the situation, yet law enforcement was called, my parents were contacted, and I was treated as a suspect. As a minor, that experience was extremely overwhelming and inappropriate. Instead of being protected, I was singled out without proper verification. The impact this had on me was significant. I experienced embarrassment, isolation, and social stigma for the rest of the school year. Other students avoided me, and it affected my ability to feel safe and comfortable in that environment. Now that I am an adult, I still reflect on how this situation was handled and believe it was a serious failure in judgment and student care. I have recently reached out to the district seeking answers and accountability. I hope the district takes situations like this more seriously moving forward and ensures that no student is ever wrongfully identified or treated this way again.
