I'm so excited to see this little addition pop up on 27th & Main. I'm moreso excited that when I wandered in, balancing coffee and pizza box haphazardly that I wasn't immediately booted out of the place. And I'm literally shaking with excitement that the first thing I found was an IMPECCABLE copy of Jose Saramago's Blindess. For $6. Which just so happens to be my favourite book. This place is cute. Small but well kept. And fairly priced. As Monica noted, the paperback ranges from $6-9 and the condition is like new. Their fiction section is smaller then I hoped for, but their taste is good. I'm looking forward to watching them expand in this department. Heavy on the romance/young adult sections but that's nothing new in the used bookstore world. Also - bonus points for having a well stocked "local author" section. Owner was soft spoken but sweet and happy to have me bounce about with my iphone for Yelp pics. We were due for a gem of this nature and I couldn't be happier! Grab a coffee from Trafiq and pour over the bookcases - recipe for a fantastic afternoon!

They have an eclectic collection of used books strewn throughout the shop and although it's not the neatest nor the largest bookstore that I've been to, I always manage to find something here that catches my eye. In Chinese, its "San Lian Shu Dian" or "Sam Leen Shu Deem" but if you didn't already know that, its likely the book selection isn't for you. I note this because virtually all of their books are published in Chinese. Lots of materials that were never given an English Cliff Notes version (aka Chinese Literature) will be on full display here. Whether its a New York Times Best Seller translated into Chinese or a How To book on anything, it's going to be available here. What do you do when you're not exactly Chinese literate? First of all, you'd probably have to figure out why you're there. Are you learning Chinese? Buying a gift for someone who does? Best ask an associate for some recommendations for a good read. And yes, ask one who speaks a reasonably good amount of English. The service has been good here, the crowds rarely flock here (#3) and the prices seem fair though a non-bookworm (aka me) has a hard time parting ways for any hardcover book for $50 unless its limited edition or includes an entire volume set. MacLeod's Books is a used book store that has been around forever (50 years according to an article…read morea couple of years ago). The store is crammed with piles of books and it looks like a disorganized mess. I've always wondered how they have survived, but there are always people in the store whenever I have gone in, so business must be steady. I first started reading Stephen King over 30 years ago, and have been reading his books on and off for the last three decades. I have recently gotten back into regularly reading his books, and I have decided to read the books I had never read before (for example, I recently finished reading 'Salem's Lot and The Shining), as well as re-read the books I have read, some of which I have only read once, 25 to 30 years ago (such as The Green Mile and his collection, Different Seasons). One of the first few Stephen King books I read 30 years ago was The Bachman Books. For those of you who don't know, early on in his career, Stephen King published five novels under the pseudonym Richard Bachman: Rage (1977), The Long walk (1979), Roadwork (1981), The Running Man (1982), and Thinner (1984). After it was discovered that Richard Bachman was Stephen King, the first four novels were published as a collection in 1985 known as "The Bachman Books". Rage is about a high school shooting, and King has asked that it no longer be published. Therefore The Bachman Books has become a collector's item, and King fans are always on the lookout for a copy in a used bookstore. In November 2024, I came very close to getting a copy. There is a local bookstore that sells used and new books, and I went to their website to see what Stephen King books they had in stock. I was surprised to discover that they had a copy of The Bachman Books on sale for $11! I ordered it, but ten minutes later the store called saying that unfortunately they had just sold the book that morning, after having had it in stock for several years. So close. For months, every so often, I would pop into MacLeod's Books when I was passing by, hoping to find that elusive copy of The Bachman Books. Despite never finding it (but one can hope!), MacLeod's has one of the best Stephen King collections. Their stock is always changing from one week to the next, so even if I had just been in the previous week, it was worth stopping in again. Sometimes there wasn't anything I was interested in, and sometimes I would walk out with a book or two. I've purchased several Stephen King books from MacLeod's over the past few months. A couple of weeks ago, I was running errands after work and was debating whether or not to stop in, as I would have to go a few blocks out of my way and I had been in about a week and a half prior. But I thought to myself, "What if this is the day they finally have it, and I decide not to go?" After carefully examining the Stephen King stock to be sure I didn't miss anything, I looked at the small pile of assorted books near the Stephen King section, and under several books I spied a familiar red spine. I HAD FOUND IT! I picked up the book and the store owner came up to me and said, "Hold on, I haven't priced these yet, I am in the process of putting out this new stock." I said, "I really really want this...." And he said, "It's a collector's item." Concerned, I responded, "I know... I'll pay you... $50..." He said, "Hmmm.... well, it IS a collector's item.... I'll sell it to you for... $15." Yes, only $15! I couldn't believe it! The store owner knew how valuable this book was and knew I was willing to pay $50, but he only charged me $15 (as opposed to $5 to $10 that he normally charges for pocket books). I finally have a copy of The Bachman Books! [Yelp collections: Libraries and Bookstores]

We love to see a bookstore thriving!! This is so much more than just a bookstore (and adjoining…read morepaper/confectionery/novelty shop). Its a community hub! I recently moved to Bellingham and Village Books (and paper dreams) actually really swayed me to move here. Its a book palace, 3 stories of well organized selection. The front facing books are well chosen, and the used books are interspersed with the new books. There are quite a few staff picks sections, all of which are super interesting and worth looking over. Three days before Christmas 2025 I was there trying to pick out a horror book for a friend of mine. Horror is not my genre (more of a fantasy and literature gal myself), so I for sure needed guidance. The shop lady spent so much time reviewing the whole horror section with me . When we couldn't find the main book we decided on me buying, she spent the time looking everywhere for it. She enlisted the help of two additional staff members. When she was needed for another task, she made sure one of the other shop ladies had me covered. I ended up ordering the book, which came in a few days and they texted me when it arrived. Easy peasy! I will never forget that experince, especially as the store was jam packed with x-mas shoppers. Village books in fairhaven is the spot! My only note is that their bookclubs could be better. The bookclubs are during the day and don't have different genre selections (they are mostly nonfiction). There is a silent reading bookclub that I might try. They could be cultivating different types of communities (ie book clubs geared towards romantasy, sci-fi, literature, etc.), but maybe that will come with time.

This store seemingly has it all; great selection of books, both knew and used, lots of old wood, and a staff that seems knowledgeable if a little bit unhappy. The last part can explain why the vibe is just off. It just doesn't feel comfortable nor welcoming, and if I had to put my finger on the cause, I would say it is likely due to management. I witnessed firsthand how the store manager ignored customers in line waiting to pay because he was on the phone. You never ignore the customers who are right in front of you. I wish the store all the best, but I'm gonna take my book shopping business elsewhere.
