We moved to Anderson almost 7 months ago and we've been looking for a great Mexican restaurant. We have tried 5 or 6 different places and they were all avg tasting. When we finally decided to try Papa's we weren't disappointed. A definite 5 star. Probably the best Mexican food we have tasted outside of San Diego. The service was spot on. Waitress gave is several things to consider and the atmosphere was nice. Not too loud and restaurant was very clean. My Mexican Tacos were just spicy enough and the refried beans were perfect. Our first time here, it wasn't too busy on a Sunday afternoon. The food was excellent and the services was very good.

Had a good experience at the other location from a previous time and wanted to come here for Father's Day and with our family. The vibe was very colorful and festive just like the other one. They had a pretty nice outdoor patio but it was too hot for that. We had a really nice server, young handsome guy. He was very attentive and replenished our chips periodically when they ran low. We stopped by the salsa bar and grabbed a plethora of different kinds. Unfortunately there were a couple that were "bad" or started to ferment. It was not a pleasant way to find out and I didn't want to point it out to the server because it may just be me. My husband did taste it and agree that it was like that but didn't want to make a big deal of it so we just ate the chips. I got carne asada because it was so good last time and hubby got some asada tacos. When my entree came, I noticed the rice looked to be either undercooked or possibly al dente because of the texture, you could see each grain and it wasn't soft and fluffy looking. When I went to take a spoonful it was actually cooked but could tell it was overly saturated in butter. I have never had Mexican style rice cooked this way and it was a bad representation of it. I understand if they want to be more Americanized or cater to a certain demographic but rice is simple and it tastes best made the authentic way, not with a bunch of butter. It was inedible for me and I just worked around the rest. The steak had a good char and had nice flavor, but was a bit dry. The tacos my husband ordered seemed a bit messy, and the meat was in large chunks rather than chopped in smaller pieces like how we've normally had steak tacos. Just didn't seem like there was a lot of effort put into the food made that night and we will most likely go back to the other location instead. This is my new goto Mexican spot in Anderson. I've been 3x now and always amazing! The atmosphere is lively, and very colorful. The staff is nice and it is decorated fun and authentic. I like that I get something different here than I do at most other Mexican restaurants. I tried the Cali burrito. It is the best burrito I've had , something about the flavor/spice profile is so unique and mouth watering. It's not hot just very rich and authentic. It's my goto and well priced @11 dollars. Also comes with rice lettuce and sour cream. It's huge too so can easily take half home for meal #2. They also have a self serve salsa bar with over 10 different salsas from "Nino" kid mild salsa, to their spicy habanero and cilantro salsas. Would recommend them to anyone wanting a well priced and delicious tasting dinner! read more

This location is in the old Joe's Crab Shack and is very large. We were seated outside and perused the large menu, which has a good selection of lunch specials Mon-Fri. My friend raved about their Mexican Caesar salad, which you can order as an entree with your choice of protein, or as a side. I ordered it with chicken, and my friend had the fish tacos with the salad on the side. Both salads were beautifully presented and were delicious, and the tacos looked appetizing as well. We also enjoyed the fresh tortilla chips along with the many choices on their salsa bar. The one issue we had was with service, which was nonexistent after our food was delivered, until our waiter peeked around the corner much later and realized we were still there. He was honest and said he forgot about us! We had enjoyed sitting on the patio and chatting, so no harm no foul other than his tip being reduced. Horrible experience do not recommend. I ordered a carne asada and the first plate had a hair in my rice so they brought me a new one. The second plate had another hair and I'm assuming it was the manager that came to the table and got upset and asked me what do I want her to do about it. What was she expecting for me to eat the hair? They gave me a third plate and my rice wasn't cooked all the way through. The tortillas weren't cooked and cold. We went here with a large group last week and were seated on the patio, which was great. They were super accommodating. We had a ton of appetizers, and our group had everything from tacos, burritos, quesadillas, chimichangas, margaritas and beer. Everything was very good and the staff was super friendly and helpful. On a business trip and this was right next to my hotel. Nice and clean. Margaritas were outstanding. They have a salsa bar where you can try about a dozen different styles (they even have a "children's" salsa. I ended up mixing a few just for fun and they were all fresh. I ordered the spicy shrimp. They were piping hot and generously portioned. There was a real nice kick to it as well. Service was all very good. I sat at the bar and the bartender was very friendly. We went with a group of 7 because we love the Greenville location. Bean dip was watered down but still edible. The rest of our food was awful. Everything that contained the ground beef (burritos, tacos and nachos) was inedible and all of us felt sick later. It was sitting in puddles of grease. Even the rice, which I LOVE at the Greenville location, was tasteless. The servers were fighting over tables yet the service wasn't even very good - we had to tell one server to help the customer at the table next to us because he was completely ignored. Literally the worst meal ever. First, only half of our table got waters after asking. Skinny margarita was disgusting, mango margarita was straight sugar. We were brought draft beer when bottle was requested. The bottled beers were brought out with caps, and we had to wait for an opener. Food took literally forever to the point where we cancelled most of our meals. While waiting for food a roach fell onto the ledge an inch from my daughter. The bathrooms had no towels and no working air dryer. If I could give it negative stars I would. Stay away from this place!!!! There has got to be somewhere that at least has a responsible manager to have Mexican food. The manager didn't discount anything, and couldn't even get the roach herself (my husband had to squish it and grab it for her). Diners beware!!!! read more

Where do I begin! My sister once told me, "I died and went to Taco heaven" honestly, I felt the same way when I ate at this restaurant but I died and went to Mexican food heaven in this case! This is not my first time here. I've been to this restaurant numerous times when I lived in SC but I never reviewed it back then (wasn't active on Yelp back then). I forgot how good this place was after spending over a year in Arizona now. We were a group of 4, we showed up at a pretty weird time for lunch, 4:00pm. The place was pretty empty. We were immediately seated and offered the bean dip and some fresh chips. The waiter then took our drink orders and gave us some time to look at the menu. Not really needing to look at it, I ordered our usual favorite, chicken fajita for 2 and my sister ordered two orders of Mexican City Tacos, steak. We also ordered the table-side guacamole for our starter. The drinks came very quickly and the table-side guacamole was served a few min after that. It's usually prepared next to the table so it's absolutely fresh, and yes, Delicious!! I am a big fan of guacamole and the restaurant does an excellent job with it. While waiting for the food to come, we went to the salsa bar and got some salsas for our food. You are allowed to get 3 per entree. They have different kinds that are either mild, medium or spicy, all which are great. The food arrives and my or my, the smell is amazing! We started with the tacos. Yes, my sister was absolutely right, they are to die for. I don't think I've had tacos that delicious before! Yummy! I can have this everyday! We also shared the fajitas. The smokey flavor in the fajitas is amazing! They are always served with sour cream, guacamole, lettuce, rice and beans. We skipped the refried beans and had double orders of rice. Honestly, the rice is the only thing I didn't enjoy very much but at this point, who cares, it's only a side for an excellent dish! I really wish I could find a similar Mexican restaurant in Arizona. I'm sure if I look well, I'll find something probably as good, but for now, sorry all Mexican restaurants everywhere I know, Papas and Beer is the best! read more

Best mexican food I have ever had in my life! I was going to get a typical chimichanga, but saw they also featured a large section of not typical mexican dishes on the menu. One of them was the special for the day; the Tres Amigos. It was a thin steak, then chicken breast, and four large shrimp wrapped in bacon with grilled onions and mushrooms and a side of rice, beans, and salad. The steak and chicken tasted like they were sent from heaven to my plate. The marinade and seasoning was like nothing I have ever tasted; heavenly! Also, the free chips were served with a bean dip (never had that before at a mexican restaurant) that was pretty good. They also have a salsa bar you pick out a variety of salsas to try with your chips or meal. The decor of the place was a bit weird for me, but I would return for sure for the food. read more

Went here with my daughter last weekend for the 1st time. Staff very friendly, but our waiter struggled to check on us, and the standard margarita was just that "standard". Food was just ok..& I ordered steak and shrimp fajitas.. waited on the tortillas 10 minutes after I got the steak and shrimp. DOV: Fri., Jan. 20 @ 6:30pm ALMOST 5-STARS! Almost four years later, my observations remain pretty much the same. Nothing dramatic has happened one way or the other to change my opinion of this place, but there is one small issue that keeps me from giving it 5-stars: the tortilla soup. I have had it many times since my last review and it is one of those hit-or-miss items that comes out fresh and delicious or falls short and misses the mark completely. It is excellent probably 60% of the time, but the other 40% it is sour in a fermented sort of way. It is still edible, just not fresh the way it should be. The service is still good, no complaints there. The salsa bar is nice, fresh and well stocked. The menu is diverse and prices are competitive. The portions are very generous, often plenty big enough to share between two people. I love, love the festive atmosphere - colorful and bright! Still recommend this Papa's and Beer, for sure. Maybe next review it'll be 5-stars for me. read more

Food is good, but our server was so stoned he didn't know where he was. I tried to order a Diet Coke and I confused the hell out of him. It was comical. If they invested in hiring and spent some money on payroll they'd do a lot better. Right now the bottom of the barrel works here. All you need is a heartbeat and you'd probably be hired. read more

Horrible service from the start. We got seated and waited for our waiter to come by and get our drink order. Not only did we wait for 15 minutes before having to flag down a random waiter to come by, but people who were seated after us were being waited upon and getting their drinks. The food came out in a reasonable manor, and it was alright. After our food came out we never saw the waiter again until he came by to give us the check. No check ups or drink refills during the meal. It would be one thing if they were super busy. But they weren't. There were empty tables all around us. read more

Place was very festive with the obligatory Mexican music playing in the background. The food was OK except for anything that was fried was double fried and double brown. I asked for fresh chips and a nice waiter offered to go back and rummage through the chip pile and find some more suitable chips but he could not provide any. I ordered chorizo chicken..it was okay. They had a salsa bar which had very interesting sauces. The taquitos were fried to within an inch of their life and could not even be bitten into. Prices were reasonable. This location-- fast and friendly service. Clean, new restaurant. I've had shrimp enchiladas and avocado tacos (two different visits). Both were great, especially the enchiladas. This location isn't my favorite, but I am a huge fan of Papa's and Beer. They have a great selection of food, salsa, and beer. My favorite thing about Papa's and Beer is the fact that they have a salsa bar. It probably isn't the most sanitary thing to offer, but it's neat to be able to try a plethora of varieties. My personal favorite is the pumpkin seed salsa. Sounds weird, I know, but don't hate until you try! I ordered the fresh chicken, which is essentially two butterflied and grilled chicken breasts with sauteed veggies and topped with a pineapple salsa. The fresh salsa on top really made the dish. I would definitely order that again. I do enjoy that Papa's and Beer serves a fresh pinto bean and pico de gallo side instead of refried beans. That is much more appetizing to me. It is a little pricey, but you get ginormous portions, and that counts as two meals, right? That's how I see it anyways. The atmosphere here is a little overwhelming when it's busy, but the food is worth it in my book. read more

Ordered cheese dip LOVE. after reading the yelp reviews I ordered California burrito, it was huge $6.99 took one bite and that's it. Did not like it at all. My husband ordered the chimichanga $7.25 he ate most of it, I also didn't like it. Good service but just not good food for me. First time trying it and will be the last. read more

I love papa's and beer. The food here goes beyond your average Mexican joint and has a true authentic taste to it. Unlike other restaurants, they don't just fill your plate with refried beans, rice, something in a tortilla, then smother it all in a generic sauce. Each enchilada, burrito, tostada - you name it - has its own finesse. The price point for the quality of food is unreal. The regular menu is mostly under $10, and the lunch menu is a jaw-dropping deal. Also, they add that special touch with their bean dip and chips and a stocked salsa bar. Prepare yourself to leave here never wanting to eat again but absolutely wanting to come back for more...in a week or so. read more

Yuck. The restaurant isn't that clean...trash and food on the floor, tables not wiped off, menus sticky. I carefully read the menu. I wanted a burrito without beans and ordered one of those. The burrito came, filled with beans, and I tried to return it. I did not appreciate a waiter, interrupting me, and trying to read the menu to me. At the top of the page, it stated all the items that came on the side of burritos, like lettuce, sour cream, refried beans, pico de gallo, etc. He argued that since refried beans were listed there, they could also put them in the burrito, and it didn't matter what else was listed as ingredients in each burrito. Using that argument, there wasn't any sour cream, lettuce, or pico de gallo in the burrito but I guess that didn't support his argument. He then disappeared for 15 min. We finally had to go to the register and repeatedly ask for the dang check. Of course, all the 20 some waiters and waitresses played the "we can't find a manager" game, and we were charged the full amount. We will never be back. There are too many great Mexican restaurants in this area to ever frequent this joint again. It's yucky. read more

My husband and I have been to this restaurant many times, without incident. Food and service has always been fine. Yesterday, however, our female server brought check for payment, $19.58 due. My husband laid down two twenties and awaited change. She brought back two "fives" only. We called her back to table, confronted her with events and she pulled out another ten from waist bag, still no coin change. He left her tip, but she was not flustered and did NOT apologize. Her deception was obviously deliberate. Just a warning to always count change back, honesty isn't always some of their employees policy. read more

I remember when they first opened the Anderson location, we were very impressed then. But now (three years later) it's just another Mexican Food Restaurant. Nothing outstanding, just run of the mill pap. Bummer... Most restaurants are that way. Every eighteen months they get back to their good self and then slowly slide back down in quality. They are a "California Style" Mexican Cuisine and it sets them apart from all other Mexican restaurants in the surrounding area!! The meals are fantastic with great portions.
