He's been able to advance to the math level that makes sense for him--he's a 7th grader in Algebra--and I really appreciate that they try to get kids into a math that makes sense for where they're at. I also think they have a very decent set of electives. For instance, he's taking Forensic Science--which he loves--and he's signed up for Public Speaking/Debate in the spring. The principal, Dr. Michael, is both inspiring and very hands on. The teachers are experienced, and they seem to enjoy teaching kids this age. My son had a concussion at one point, and literally every single teacher was incredibly understanding and gave him significant time to recover and get caught up. We were very grateful. It's worth noting: to limit opportunities for bullying and misbehavior, the time between classes is tight. Middle schoolers are expected to take care of and speak up for themselves. So if someone needs water, they should bring a water bottle and fill it in the morning and at lunch. This means they have to step away from their friends for a hot second, but they figure it out pretty quickly. All in all, my son is getting a great academic education and he's learning to manage his time and speak up for himself with teachers. I'm very pleased with his experience and growth thus far! Almost everyone at this school had no personality, like they were all copy and pastes of each other. Almost all the girls were blonde even if it was bleached (probably just to fit in), or the typical modern preppy, the boys however had the biggest egos I have seen. Almost every student and teacher made me feel very unsupported, overlooked, and constantly had me stressing over my appearance, and my style. The teachers were very dismissive, inconsiderate, inattentive, and overall just unprofessional. One in particular teacher was my science teacher Ms. Hains, she would constantly support the bullying of one certain student, even sometimes making rude comments to and of this student for absolutely no reason at all. Yes, I know teaching is and can be very hard but it absolutely does not mean you can take out your frustration on to your students. One of my other teachers even said that bullying should be brought back, although I know this could be a harmless joke to some, but for the people who have experienced actual bullying would not have found this funny at all. Sometimes I would go days without showing up just because of how mentally draining this school was, and when I would return NO teacher would ask how I have been, or maybe why I was out, not one single genuine concern for me. I would even go to school every single day feeling so anxious that I would sometimes throw up in the morning because of how overwhelmed I felt. I hope that I never ever have to go to a school like this ever again, I wouldn't even wish this on my worst enemy.

It has made such an impact on his on his life. He is so much more structured in his ways of life...and he is only 9. His first year at Veritas was great and he had a phenomenal teacher. I joked with that teacher, Mr. Haley, about him being Kai's teacher every year. It's also nice that parents get many volunteer opportunities so you can engage with your child and his/her class. That kind of engagement even help change my life and gave me weekly volunteer opportunities to be a part of with the children. On another note, it is also very neat that the school also just made a plethora of renovations and added a high school. It's wonderful to such forward progress so fast. I can only imagine what the future holds for this incredible school. I think it's great that the children have to wear uniforms and adhere to a strict appearance policies. Veritas is a classical academy so it really try to enforce that in everything. Not only are "normal" subjects taught like match and science, students choose between Greek and Latin, they read classic novels, learn and practice different genres of art, and they partake in Healthy Hearts. It is a really impressive curriculum. Also, the the extra-curricular activities are amazing: there's ballroom dancing, chess club, running club, sportball, just to name a few. I highly recommend Veritas to any parent who is looking for a well-structured, well-rounded, classical way of teaching. It was such a shell shock to go from a middle school to an elementary school, with kinder Garten age kids running around and sharing the playground with 2nd graders. They require 120 hours of community service per parent and demand that you pay cash for hours unmet. Every single event is overpriced. Still you pay for it and then they ask for donations on top of it. Principal seems to rotate every year so any ground they gain is lost the next year. Principal always pawns off issues to the Teacher and the Teacher pawns off issues to the principal. Parking is terrible and super limited but they decided last year to close out most of the parking to install solar panels during the day. Not at night, not on school break but the middle of the school year. Stay far away from this place.

About a month ago I attended the 9th Annual Arcadia Edible Garden Tour. We visited some really…read morewonderful home edible gardens in the Arcadia area of Scottsdale, AZ . . . but the one that stood out beyond all the others was this elementary school. Arcadia Neighborhood Learning Center (ANLC) is an elementary school teaching its children where food really does come from - gardens and farms. And that grocery stores are only the middle man. The children have their own gardens - with veggies and flowers. Even the Preschool students have a garden. Once a month they have a visiting local Chef who comes and teaches a small group of students how to prepare food they have grown . . . and how to make it tasty. Young home garden farmers and chefs are being taught how to do it right. The ANLC is part of a 120-year history of the Scottsdale Unified School District - they've been educating our children since 1896 in both creative and traditional skills. And the children love it! If you live in this neighborhood and have young children, they are the lucky ones! Learning to grow and eat their veggies!
