Not just a "cheese shop" but agritourism too!…read more
Off a busy main road, just outside Rota proper, there is a dirt road that takes you right to El Bucarito.
Their cheese is all goat product, some pasteurized, some not, some aged, some not. Their store also has a selection of local honeys, and other preserves, and their own homemade chorizos. They have quite a selection, and sophisticated operation, for a local artisan farm.
They also offer pre-booked tours, for groups of 10 or more (16,5€ pp), or, if you want a private tour for fewer people, it is more expensive (we were quoted 37.5€ pp, for two). Make sure to ask for a tour given in English, if needed (I emailed Yolanda ahead at quesos@elbucarito.es). The tour shows you how the cheese is made, AND you each get to make your own. Additionally, you get to tour their organic site (with didactic video), meet the farm animals (milk goats, observe pigs/donkeys/horses). There is even a visit to their aviarium, where you can fly their birds of prey. At the end, they provide tapas from all their own cheese/meat products.
Unfortunately, our day took longer to progress than anticipated, so we had to skip the tour, but I'd love to go back when I have more time and do it. Looks great for kids!
You certainly can visit just the store, if you want. They provide samples, upon request, in the store. Prices are reasonable, and for the quality, they are a good deal.
Their cheese is amazing. I have had quite a few cheeses in my travels, homestays, and visits with local European friends, in France and Spain, and these were right up there with some of my most memorable tastes. The flavors and textures they capture through technique, are so varied and unique, it is hard to believe they come from all the same goats herding outside the store.
