I successfully found a meat counter that sells very fancy pants Iberico ham. The pigs feet are black. They ate acorns all their lives, until they die and their meat is super sweet, tender and filled with nutty flavors. Sought after in the world, in its local grocery stores, this ham cutting station is a total scene. I have had Iberico ham before in other parts of Spain, but to come to a supermarket and get some freshly sliced ham is something else. I had 100 grams of Iberico ham and it's roughly $6.50. Very delicious. I bought cheeses, drinks, bread and varies charcuterie items, tiny eels which I love to eat (white, small eel looking fish), caviar, freshly sliced Iberico ham, water, oranges and grapes. With all that we had our dinner in the hotels and the left over turned into one breakfast and three lunches. This is one thing I've learned over the last few years of traveling in Europe. Americans like to eat every meal sitting down at a restaurant or cafe, Europeans like to pack their own food, especially Germans and Scandinavians. I find that very puzzling at first and sort of cheap ass, because why would you not want to spend money on a meal, after all you are traveling? Then I realized in the last two years how advantageous this is, when you 1) have a lot to see; 2) don't want to gorge and get too fat by eating every meal at a restaurant; 3) save some money and time; 4) get to enjoy local food as opposed to touristy food served for fat Americans. I highly recommend Americans to try that approach. I returned the next day and bought 15 different packaged Iberico ham, salami and sausages to take with me to my home office, where it's almost Chinese New Year season and it's time to hand out sausages and ham to colleagues around Asia. Very excited about bringing gifts to my colleagues. Finally, I also purchased lots of interesting local candies and cookies to bring back to my friends in the States (meats are not allowed in the States). I hope that they will appreciate the sentiment.

We wanted to buy some Jamon Iberico/…read morepata negra (black ham) to take back home, and were glad to have visited this store because it's only a 5 minute walk from where we were staying. They just happened to have a sale going on for ~ 12 EU per 1/4 kilo, so we ended up getting a good amount of the stuff. They did have another offer for various pata negra from different regions, but it was a bit more expensive (more than twice as expensive), so we passed on it. Definitely a fan!

The set-up here is basic: a small, skinny open kitchen on one wall with counter & stool seating and a few high tables inside and several tables out on the nearly abandoned sidewalk. Few Sunday strollers, but plenty of afternoon diners - this was the only place open within an easy walk. The menu seemed to mirror what's on offer at their other restaurants and the operation is basically plate it and warm it - no oven in view, only a toaster, really. A fair amount of what they were serving came chilled. We ate well, in any case. The only dish that stands out in my memory is a tuna/potato baked quiche sort of dish served with a rather nice aioli. They were busy, with one guy plating, one guy heating/washing up, and one women serving, so service was somewhat understandably sluggish. The atmosphere has a relaxed, neighborhood vibe, totally casual. NB: if you google La Alacena de San Eloy the search returns a small grocer. But I took a photo of the name on the awning...so its a little confusing. Maybe they share adjacent spaces?
