Since I cannot watch movies without a siopao or two to munch on, I'm glad there's a Kowloon House near where I used to live. It's in a strip mall fronting Brazil street, which makes it not too far from SM Bicutan. Whether asado or bola-bola, Kowloon has been able to maintain its terrific taste over the decades. This place is open until late into the evening, so whenever the urge hits, I can be sure that I can get my favourite jumbo siopao practically anytime. Kowloon claims to have the "world's best dimsum" and it's not an idle boast. How else could it have survived for the longest time? However, the outlet along Dona Soledad Avenue says it's open 24 hours a day, but there have been several occasions when I passed by and it was closed for business. The place is more kiosk than restaurant, by the way. There are only a handful of tables and chairs, but that's ok. Most customers order take out anyway. There's been only one out of so many times when I wasn't totally satisfied with my Kowloon siopao. The taste seemed funny, close to spoiling. I chalk up that one bad experience to their possibly recycling unsold siopao. Or maybe it was just one bad batch out of thousands sold every month. I've been crazy for Kowloon House siopao ever since I was a kid. I still am. Five stars for the world's best dimsum!

In preparation for Chinese New Year, they had festive red lanterns hanging from the ceiling that didn't take away from the crystal chandeliers. There were regular tables but we preffered the booths that were slightly elevated and were definitely more private. The staff is very well trained, attentive, ever-present without being obsequious. We learned that every team member helps serve each table, from taking orders to pouring water, serving tea, etc. And all tips are shared. That's great way to promote teamwork and camaraderie. We opted for the Yum Cha, a Cantonese tradition literally meaning "drink tea," referring to a brunch meal where various Chinese teas are enjoyed alongside "dim sum"--small, shareable, steamed, fried, or baked dishes. In our case, that meant dim sum, as many as one can order for one set fee. They have an extensive selection that should please every palate. We ordered pork, chicken, seafood, tofu, even chicken feet. And every single dish was scrumptious. We made the suggestion that they change their tea pots into copper or something else that will retain heat. Their current ceramic tea pots just didn't keep the tea hot enough and we had to keep asking for new pots because our tea got cold very fast. The Shangri-la where Shang Palace is located is another matter. A very elegant hotel that offers venues for all kinds of celebrations. What we noticed was that as busy as it was, it seemed quite serene. It was quiet and very clean, a real show piece.

Shang Palace Christmas Set Menu Review…read more We had the Christmas Day set menu at Shang Palace, priced at around ₱2,800 per head, with higher-tier options at ₱4,000 and ₱6,000. For the price, this was a very satisfying experience and a great option for a festive family lunch. The ambience is classic Shang Palace, elegant, quiet, and slightly majestic, perfect for a Christmas celebration. Service was attentive and polished throughout, with good pacing between courses and no feeling of being rushed. The meal started with dim sum, which set the tone nicely. The siomai and shrimp rolls were standouts, delicate, flavorful, and clearly made with quality ingredients. The beancurd roll was also very good, crisp on the outside with a well-seasoned filling. Among the mains, the Wok-Fried US Beef Tenderloin with Black Pepper Sauce was a highlight, tender slices of beef in a rich, savory, slightly peppery sauce that felt comforting and indulgent without being heavy. The seafood dish featuring scallops served in a crispy taro nest was both visually impressive and enjoyable, paired with vegetables that balanced the dish well. A mushroom and vegetable dish with bok choy came in a glossy, traditional sauce and complemented the meat dishes nicely. The fried rice was fragrant, well-cooked, and generously studded with meat and egg, the kind that keeps disappearing from the table. Dessert was the only weak point. It was a taro-based sweet soup with sago, similar to ginataan, and felt underwhelming compared to the rest of the meal. Overall, this was a very good Christmas set menu. The food was consistently well-prepared, the ambience elevated the occasion, and the service lived up to expectations. The ₱2,800 set already delivers solid value, though those looking for more premium ingredients may want to explore the higher-priced options. A great choice for holiday dining, just manage expectations for dessert.
