This is the place! In the higher and cooler beautiful Kohala ranch area. Expansive barn , beautiful horses, they have boots, slickers, headgear. It's a legitimate riding experience on well behaved horses, not a little lead along- independent and fun riding! All the staff are wonderfully pleasant and experienced! Ask for Liz a skilled, beautiful and wonderfully calm wrangler! Morning, afternoon or sunset rides are all equally wonderful! read more

We had an amazing ride with Liz at Paniolo Adventures. Our horses were so well behaved and kind. The area around Weimea is so beautiful and perfect for horseback riding. We loved our time and would return again in the future! Recommend getting dinner at Merriman's after your trip! read more

Paniolo Adventures - A look at the trail on the ride - Horseback Riding Near Me

Returned to the Big Island for the first time since 2019. I took three friends on the morning Paniolo ride and last-minute booked a wrangler ride for myself for the next day. Loved it. I rode Sterling both days, and what a sweetheart -- peppy but safe! I am still really impressed by the level of care that clearly goes into these horses (one of the staff ladies was literally combing manes and tails while the horses waited between rides). The wrangler staff is small and it's obvious they know the herd, which makes me feel good about asking my horse to work. Ayla, Azia, and Liz were all wonderful. Liz especially managed a wrangler ride of 3 with different riding levels with aplomb. I'd definitely book the wrangler ride for myself again the next time I'm back! read more

I've been in my paniolo era and had Paniolo Adventures on my bucket list for a while ever since I saw some stunning photos on social media. I gotta say, the experience lived up to the hype. I'm already wanting to plan another trip to go again! First off, the area is absolutely stunning. Ocean views from the mountain with cows, pigs, and other amazing wildlife all around. On the day we went, we had clear views of Haleakala on Maui. The most beautiful experience ever. Period. The time that you sign up for is the check-in time. We signed up for their afternoon ride, so we arrived at 1pm. That time has check-in and getting ready time built in (vs. having to show up 30 mins before). You do have to sign an online waiver ahead of time and then they also have a waiver that you sign on-site. I actually opted to not wear a helmet and was able to do that after checking a certain box on the waiver. The cool thing about this spot is that they have cowboy boots of all sizes that you can borrow for your ride. I obviously came with my own boots, but my boyfriend was able to find a pair in his size. In their check-in area they also have a bathroom and water for purchase or a refill station. The staff are so knowledgeable of the area and safety plus overall just so charismatic --making the ride and overall experience so much fun. read more

This place was by far the best horseback ride "tour" I've been on. Great guides, great horses, felt personalized and authentic. They have boots, clean socks, jackets and hats which was a huge bonus! Such a beautiful ride. Highly recommend and I'll be back! read more

Phenomenal ride as an experienced rider! They take care of beginners but it isn't a nose-to-tail ride, encouraging you to take advantage of the ample range to spread out. The ride also includes a trot and lope for those comfortable. A team who wonderfully trusts their horses and is keeping you safe without overly controlling things. Plus, the scenery is off the charts gorgeous. read more

My wife, Anna, son, John, and I went on a 3 hour ride this afternoon -- from 1pm - 4pm. Azia and Alya were our guides. The ranch scenery is off the charts beautiful. The horses were trustworthy and well trained. The guides were the best. They were very attentive to the needs of riders, very conversational, and highly experienced. My son and wife really enjoyed talking with Azia and Alya. My son wished he could have kept talking with them! Anyway, the entire experience was an exceptional experience. Thank you Paniolo! read more

How can you pass up the experience to see the beautiful scenery and get an experience of a lifetime?! My nieces, sister, and I were truly blessed to have an opportunity to go on the afternoon stroll ride which was about 2 1/2 hours. It was the first time for my nieces. They were nervous at first but with the help of our guides Grace F and Sydney W, we were all put at ease. It's nice that they provide the option to borrow jackets and boots. It does get a lil breezy on the hills and the boots are good if you don't want to get your shoes dirty. But, if you end up wearing your own shoes, it doesn't get that dirty. Just have to make sure to watch where you're stepping. They also give the option if you want to wear a helmet or not. The time flew by because we were all having fun. We were a lil sore on the legs when we got off afterward. It's best to stretch a lil before and after you ride. read more

Last-minute cancellation in heavy rain after repeated reassurances -- no apology, no compensation, and terrible communication. Don't waste your time with Paniolo Adventures. I had a horseback riding tour with Paniolo Adventures in May 2025. Concerned about the weather, I called twice in advance -- both times they said it was just light rain and the tour would go on. Based on that, I drove nearly 1.5 hours with my family. During the drive, the rain kept getting heavier, but we received no updates. Only when we arrived -- in a total downpour -- did they finally call to cancel, right at the start time. When I asked about any compensation or future discount, they just said, "We'll see next time," with no apology or concrete offer. We ended up wasting nearly 3 hours of driving in dangerous conditions, with no communication or accountability from the company. Completely unprofessional and inconsiderate. I won't be returning, and I don't recommend this company. read more

this is a must see place over 11,000 acres of open cattle ranching land that goes from the top of the mountain all the way to the Pacific Ocean. Just to see the lush grass, the beautiful horses and open to rain fills your soul with purity. The guides and the horses are very well-behaved and well cared for. The office treats you with boots, cowboy hats, helmets, and big Aussie duster coats. I have traveled the world and ridden horses and many countries. A lifetime experience. read more

We had a fabulous ride! I am an experienced, but rusty, rider. My husband is less experienced. Paniolo Adventures provided us both with just the right horses. The guides explained how to safely mount, how to rein to turn and stop horses. They checked in frequently on our 2+ hour ride. More experienced riders were allowed to trot and canter in safe areas. The views were magnificent. The horses were all well groomed and well fed. I would ride with them again in a heartbeat. Oh--they also provide helmets, boots and even socks, if you didn't bring these with you to Hawaii, because who does that?! read more

With panoramic views only witnessed on Horseback, this is not your typical trailride! The subtle differences separate the typical trail-riding with learning to be a Paniolo- Open Range is definitely where it's at! This is NOT a nose to tail lallygagging excursion; One will be awestruck riding alongside many heads of Hawaiian cattle- upon 1000's of lush acres with natural scenery that always satisfies. A must-do for folks truly wanting to experience Big Island culture and history- go back in time with experienced guides aimed to enrich your adventure-telling stories back home A LO HA! read more

This was a dreamy, unbelievable experience. Being able to explore a gorgeous 11,000 acre ranch that overlooks the ocean at sunset was truly so special. The ranch is picturesque in a way that can't be adequately described unless you see it for yourself. The horses were so well trained (and not the kind that just walk in a straight line) and our guides, Z and Ann Marie were great. They provide boots (& socks!) for you to wear, & a long heavy coat if it gets cold. This is something that we'll come back to experience every time we visit the island. Highly HIGHLY recommend. Next time we want to do a longer ride, 1.5 hours didn't feel long enough! read more

My fiancée and I had an absolute blast on our Sunset ride. They thoughtfully have everything you need--socks, boosts, dusters, hats, helmets, and jackets for the cool mountain air. As others have mentioned, the views are absolutely breathtaking. We got lucky and saw both the sun setting and the full moon rising at the same time. It was ethereal. We were also able to see Maui in the distance as well as one of the observatories on Mauna Kea. Our horses, Renegade and Hoshi, were fantastic, as were our guides, Margot and Pete. WOW! I would recommend this place to anyone looking for something fun to do while on the Big Island. Horseback riding is a great experience, and I was able to see the most beautiful scenery I've ever seen. The rolling hills of Kohala were something that a picture doesn't do it justice. Our tour guides, Franny and Aly, were amazing and were super knowledgeable and patient with our group, which consisted of about ten people. They conversed with us and shared a lot of history and background about the ranch. They ensured that we were comfortable and enjoyed our time throughout the tour. I did the 2.5 hour ride at 9:30AM. We arrived before our tour to check in, sign a waiver, and change into boots. It wasn't too hot at the time and was a little overcast, which I thought was the perfect weather for horseback riding. 2.5 hours might seem long, but it felt like the perfect amount of time for me. We went all around the ranch, saw the ocean, and even had the opportunity to trot and canter! If you don't feel comfortable trotting or cantering, you don't have to, and the guides are very accommodating of everyone. Towards the end of the tour, the guides found a scenic spot to take pictures of us on our horse. The horse that I rode, Nova, was a beautiful white horse with black spots and was trained very well. She knew the path, when to stop and go, and when to canter. They also have a kamaaina discount, so be sure to ask! I would 110% recommend this to anyone traveling to the Big Island. Mahalo Franny and Aly for making our experience a memorable one! read more

View is good no doubt. But experience was pretty bad. The horses seem to be a little mistreated compared to the horses from the trainers. Equipments are pretty badly shaped. I've heard they don't allow people know how to ride a horse to ride them the in anyway but walk. For the price you pay it is not recommended. read more

Do not book if you were hoping to trot and canter, the website isn't correct and they do not allow that at least on the sunset rides. The wranglers, horses and views were all incredible but we booked this ride specifically to get a bit more action and the ride we booked specifically said they did trotting and cantering. This is a great very touristy option to do a walking trail for about an hour with gorgeous views and lots of pic opportunities. read more

Incredible ride with Grace and Z. You can tell Paniolo takes good care of their horses and really match up the riders based on their skill level. Hard to find anywhere with better views and opportunities to ride in the open land. The wranglers are very attentive to all the riders and the horses. This was definitely a highlight of our family trip. We all loved it and our kids immediately wanted to go on another ride. Had a really wonderful, enjoyable, almost 2.5 hr ride in this beautiful setting that was led by Z and Kayla. The ranch is a long drive from Kona, but it was certainly worth it. It took some time to get a group of 11 riders set up but once we were off, it was so much fun. I rode Bonnie and she was a great, responsive horse. Only my second ride ever, so I was a bit nervous and when they break into a fast trot it can be scary, but I held on and was fine. The guides also will take photos for you! Had a fantastic couple of hours riding trails and seeing the incredible beauty of the Big Island. Our guide Kayla was great -- giving us some history of this 11k+ acre farm as well as putting up with us dropping things off of the horse... use your saddlebag! . All of us were newbie riders but they made us feel at home right away. There was a great selection of boots and jackets to borrow (bring one... riding in a cloud is cold!) and gave us a great primer before setting off. Beautiful place to be, excellent customer service, and wonderful wranglers. Lexy and Ku'ulei were fantastic and considerate guides for our 2.5 hour afternoon ride. Plenty of trotting and cantering opportunities to be had, vey unlike the slow paced single file rides of Oahu. Paniolo Adventures - Beautiful horses! - Horseback Riding Near Me

I came with my cousin on a Hawaii trip and we found this spot and it is just about the most gorgeous place I could have dreamed up for a horseback riding adventure. Waimea and the area surrounding is just like the shire- rolling hills of green, just so lovely and makes you want to run around free for hours and hours. We went for the sunset horseback riding adventure and got a solid hour and a half of riding. I hadn't ridden before except when I was a little girl and my grandma had a horse ranch, and my cousin had ridden a few times. You give them your specs before (height/weight/experience) and they match you with a horse accordingly. I was a little nervous at first but the guide was super helpful and friendly and the horses pretty much know what to do. You have the experience to walk through the beautiful mountains from pasture to pasture, viewing cows in the distance and other horses and the sunset is absolutely gorgeous. There were a couple opportunities for trotting as well and when we got to this beautiful lookout point, the guide hopped off her horse and took amazing photos of us "the for gram." It was amazing! The guy who had us fill out the waivers was really friendly and they have everything you could need - long cowboy ish coats that have pockets, boots and extra socks in all sizes, extra coats and sweaters, helmets (optional and you have to opt in or out), etc. We were well provided for. There was also water and the kind woman at the end gave us some vanilla cookies as we left! It felt like a family environment and was absolutely gorgeous. They are on 11,000 acres of land out there and apparently it is the second biggest ranch in all of Hawaii. The views were gorgeous, the briefing on safety was super informative, and it's so fun to get out there and experience the intuitiveness of the horses and how you can guide them through a few movements but also it just seems like you sync up with them and are one. It is such a beautiful experience. I was a little nervous because I had previously hurt my arm really bad being hit by a car, and was challenging myself to do something that was a little scary again, and I totally don't regret it. I will definitely come back in the future and do this again! Mahalo! read more
