DO NOT USE THESE PEOPLE FOR BREEDING!! We got a lab from them in December and it was text book terrible breeder experience. They had parvo wipe out more than a whole litter and my pup was left unsocialized for days, she said she just tossed him food in his pen. They said he would be vaccinated and wasn't then he had the guts to brag about having a fridge full of vaccines. The pup was supposed to come with AKC paper but the lady said her daughter filled out the dam and sire part wrong and she would fix it and send me the papers. Its been 5 months and I've gotten nothing. My dog is mismarked with which makes him ineligible for competition or breeding (because I'm responsible, I wont pass that on). Trying to talk to the guy was awful. He was so rude, childish and beyond unprofessional. Do. Not. Use. These. People!!!! read more

Hello all, I have to say I am surprised there is not many reviews. The owner of this facility, Doug Stocks, is AWESOME!!!! He truly loves all of his dogs, and takes a lot of pride in his breeding. And, for anyone looking for the best German Shorthaired Pointer you can find, it's right here in Oroville. If you are familiar with the GSP and similar breeds, you know that it's not the right dog for a lot of people. It IS however America's favorite hunting dog, and that's not because it's super cute. This dog can run 30 miles on average A DAY! For the right person and a responsible dog owner, this is man's best friend. I am so in love with my GSP from palermo ranch kennels. He is the smartest, fastest learning, and most athletic dog I have owned. I also own livestock, and he is incredibly obedient around them at all times. I can't take any credit for how amazing my dog is, it's all in the breed. I did not start training him early, as advised by the owner of the facility and the 6 gun-dog-training and breed specific books that I had FULLY read before purchasing the dog. But, I did expose my puppy to wild birds and the outside elements with lots of room to run, everyday. My dog learned to point and flush all on his own. I merely honed his VERY evident skills after he was a year old. Puppies simply do not respond to training until their brain is mature enough to understand. That's what's so great about puppies!!!! The owner takes dogs over a year, and trains them at his large ranch with live birds and many years of experience. Pretty sweet! Also, I am totally offended by the only other comment up here. I know the owner is a very knowledgeable hunting dog breeder and trainer. One of the best in California for sure. I feel like my dog is a gift and he is the greatest companion for my family, and a BEAST of a hunting dog. Saw a one star Yelp review and had to set the record straight. Palermo Ranch is an excellent breeder, has the sharpest, healthiest GSPs and is super no-nonsense and above all - helpful. He breeds hunting and field dogs. If you're not a serious hunter I don't know why you'd want to get one of his dogs. We got a GSP pup from him 3 years ago and she is the most beautiful dog many people have ever seen. Everywhere we go people ask us where we got her and remark that she is stunning. She LOVES PEOPLE, has a stable temperament, is independent, and is so healthy. In the field she is strong, smart, never tires, and lovable as heck. She is our vet's favorite dog because of these qualities. She was so smart as a pup she could unlock her own crate from the inside. My parents got their GSP from Palermo in 2011 and she's still an incredible hunting dog. My brother got his GSP a month ago and he's the most energetic and intelligent 3-month old pup I've ever seen. I'm not sure how, but it seems like Palermo GSPs just keep getting better. We had a great experience when we bought our dog and we were the obsessive, unsure, first time dog owners and Doug was really great with us. Dog breeders are generally accepted to be eccentric and can be selective with who they work with. I wouldn't take the email responses too seriously. You can't tell in an email if someone is being sarcastic, dry, or serious. If the one star rating is for email etiquette and this was really what transpired one star is fine. I absolutely dislike defensive reviews, but I am the aforementioned brother with the "... most energetic and intelligent 3-month old pup I've ever seen." So it's kind of a family thing now, and that's unfortunate, but I feel like I have to comment. What my sister doesn't mention is that our family has had 8 GSPs (7 that she and I can remember, we were too young for Heidi before the family PCS'd from California to Germany). We've also had a litter of GSP puppies when we were in middle school when we were back state side. That was an absolute handful, and since then we've counted on reliable breeders. Palermo Ranch has been the best for my parents, my sister and my self. To Elena L, unfortunately you were wasting the breeder's time, and he tried to politely tell you so. Our dogs don't hunt at three months, and they don't hunt at six months. At three months you should be loving the pup, and working on basic commands. At three months your pup doesn't even have the full list of shots/vaccinations to hunt. Junior hunt tests have a requirement that the pup be at least six months old. Maybe if you've got some bird wings in the freezer from last season you can get them used to the smell at six months. As far as our latest Palermo Ranch pup goes (Palermo Ranch's Ollie Roger), he's straight awesome. Loves people, other dogs and when let off leash in the park he will hunt the park, all day long. He will also hold a point, straight out of the box (the example I recorded lasted more than a minute by the time I got my phone out of my pocket). Palermo Ranch's GSPs are just that damned good. My parents are counting the weeks until pheasant season. Thank you Doug for breeding such amazing dogs. Addendum: There are folks that may read this review because the new AKC best in show champ (CJ) is a GSP. I'm really proud that the breed I grew up with gets recognized in such a manner, but owning a GSP can be taxing. Ollie at 5.5 months gets 1.5-2.0 hours of exercise off-leash a day, and even then he's still rambunctious. If you cannot provide the physical and mental stimulation for this breed they will destroy your house. I would look somewhere else for a dog. I totally understand why he has no waiting list, he is extremely unprofessional. I called many times to see about getting a female pup and he sent me a picture of the pups in a kennel. I finally got ahold of him and asked if the two on the left were females and he said what does it matter they are all the same. He told me if I was going to go off of looks he was too busy and didn't have time for that kind of bullshit and hung up the phone. I come from a ranching background and I am fully aware that a good looking dog does not mean a good performing dog but for 900 dollars I believe If I want it to look a certain way that should be ok. I have had the pleasure of knowing Doug Stocks since June. When my dog passed away in May, I contacted Doug. Doug methodically helped me find a new companion throughout the entire summer. I cannot say enough positive things about Doug and the way he conducts his business. Doug is kind, patient, and breeds beautiful, loving, intelligent dogs with a superior temperament. He was exceedingly generous with his time; dependable, trustworthy, available, and consistently there for me while I contacted him, literally on a *daily* basis to find a compatible dog! I am laughing because I cannot imagine any other breeder giving so much time to a client. Doug drove his car and took time out of his day several times to meet me. He answered all my questions thoroughly, and it was clear he values homing his dogs properly. Doug loves his dogs. This is his passion. He is incredibly informed and informative. It feels funny 'reviewing' him because I consider him more of a friend than a business. But ultimately, Doug spends 7 days a week with his pups, and he breeds top quality dogs with incredible attention to detail, professionalism and love. I am so pleased with the dog I bought from Doug and I would recommend him to anyone looking for a great GSP. If I could give 10 stars, I would. I am so grateful for Doug. He truly cares about his dogs and his clients; it never once felt transactional or rushed for me. My experience was the opposite. I've never seen someone so dedicated to making something work for both the client and the dog, and to the health and homing of his pups. I will hopefully remain friends with him for many years. The dog Doug provided me from Palermo Ranch Kennels provides me with so much joy every single day. And I know if I have a question, Doug is a call away, with a solution and also, often a few laughs. It has been truly a pleasure working with him! And he didn't ask me to write this review. I don't even think he looks at reviews. He seems more interested in breeding and taking care of top quality dogs, working effectively with clients to find the right fit, than he is in selling them or his business. I would give zero stars This might be a long review but it's worth a read if you interested in this place for a gun dog training program. I had never been so insulted in my life. These are emails between me and the trainer. He called me an idiot and stupid. Hi, (This is me) Me and my boyfriend have a llewellin setter puppy. She is three months old today and we are looking into gun dog training programs. She is a pointer and will hunt upland game. She has the ability to duck hunt if taught but it's not necessarily natural for their breed. I was wondering what training programs you offered and what the cost would be. Hi, (Trainer to me) She is to young------period. Have fun with her, play, take her places, to the field and like that. Wait until she is about 9 months old to start training---one year is better ! I charge $750 a month and recommend 2 months the first year. They are introduced to birds, the gun, staunched up on point then " whoa" broke and then finished steady to wing and shot on pointed birds-----don't recommend retrieving that first year. Most are natural retriever but if you hunt them the first year after the 2 months of training and just keep them pointing and standing birds either kill or fly away it will pay dividends as she will stay broke better the rest of her life. I let them start retrieving the second season and they will be better for it. Then, if the dog need additional training backing, retrieving or anything else to polish her up the second year is the time to get that done. some come back for training----most do not which is fine. You are looking for a finished hunting companion when the pup/dog is in the 2 year old range. additionally, the older the pup is the more mature they are, take training and pressure associated with it better and the more you get for your training dollar. You don't want to be paying someone to be fooling around with a immature puppy do you ? Hope that helps. (me responding to the trainer) Thank you for all the information. Do NOT and I repeat DO not do business with Doug at Palermo. We attempted to purchase a puppy and somehow it went from sending in a deposit to not wanting to do business with us. We initially worked with a gal there and sent in the reservation form and mailed a check. After a few weeks we called in for an update to see when the pups would be ready to go home. The gal didn't know because Doug was helping the Camp fire. We finally got in touch with him. We simply wanted to know when the pups would be ready so we could plan. He told us he didn't want to do business with us and would send back the check back. This came out of no where because we had NEVER spoken with him before. He randomly tells us we need to spend our own time helping CAMP victims. He has NO idea what we have done. We spoke with the initial gal again and told Doug was going through something and to please understand. He sent us a picture of our check with VOID across it, but never mailed it back. Then we noticed the pups were off his website. While still looking for a dog several weeks later, we noticed he posted a litter. We reached out to him again, to try and make peace (even though we didn't do anything wrong) and after speaking with him for a minute he told us he was done with us. I mean it, when I tell everyone, we did NOTHING to this man. We didn't pester him, we had only spoken with him once to determine when the litter would be ready to come home.
