    Phallic rock

Beautiful lookout! We did not hike down to the town. You can hike down and take the mule ride to town to visit father Damien's church. A short walk to the Phallic Rock is worth it! It is quite interesting! We definitely will come back and spend more time here next time!

This is a relatively easy find in upcountry Molokai. It's really a must do when visiting. So much history, beauty and emotion up here. (It helps if you know about the history of Kalaupapa. If you don't, take some time to familiarize yourself. Also read the book: Moloka'i by Alan Brennert. It will give you an awesome glimpse into what happened down on the shores of this village. I'm not a bookworm and I promise it's GOOD.) Parking was plenty and we were the first ones there so it was nice to have the place to ourselves. The misty forest sets the mood for the walk down the sidewalk to the lookout. The view is beautiful and sad. Sad because of the tragedy that happened down there many years ago. But beautiful because of the coastal views, the love that Father Damien and Mother Marianne Cope brought to this island. Take time to read the plaques that are filled with information on the history of Kalaupapa. The phallic rock is located pack toward the parking lot and down a wooded trail. It's scared land so please don't sit on the rock or move any of the offerings. Take only memories and leave behind only footprints. The air is crisp and cool up here. Come early as the clouds move in rather quickly. Enjoy the quiet and soak up the beautiful nature around you.

Palaau State Park is at the end of Kalae Highway (Hwy 470) on the north central coast of upcountry Molokai. Take Highway 470 off Highway 460 east of the airport. This park area is sacred to the Hawaiians. From the parking area by the restrooms, the right trail goes to Kalaupapa Lookout and the left trail goes up the hill to Phallic Rock. Kalaupapa Lookout is a wondrous place that will etch into your mind. Cool breezes from up here, the highest sea cliffs in the world. This has got to be one of the best lookouts on earth. We waited just a few minutes for a few other people to leave, and we were up there with the place to ourselves. The township of Kalaupapa and the land down below is not a regular part of this Molokai elevated mountain formation. It is a spit of flat land formed by a side-flow from the volcano. In that way it is isolated from the rest of the island. Phallic Rock is part of Hawaiian legend. Do not disturb the landscape or any offerings you may find here. The ironwood forest trail continues past the rock, but you don't see much besides the trees. We thought there would be some great views of the ocean, but no. Mahalos yeah fo' checkin' out dis place.

We did the hike to Kalaupapa first with a tour of Kalaupapa National Historical Park, and once we got back up again decided to go to the Palaau State Park to look at the view from the lookout over the ghost town of Kalaupapa, and WOW! I was speechless.. The view is breathtaking and no less than absolutely mesmerizing. This is a view you won't get to see often!! I feel so lucky to have seen it and I hope that I one day will be able to go see it again, because really... WOW!

Short ride to find and short walk to lookout. The walk through this forest is awesome.
